Nortan Anti-virus, A Virus Itself?

Firewall: Sygate Personal Firewall Pro - get something like protowall as well.
Anti-Virus: NOD32 (or Kapersky is pretty good apparently).

I dont know if I'm alone in this, but I've been using Norton AV on my PC for years, with no issues...!

As for uninstalling, I belive there used to be an uninstall utility on the norton site that let you remove it toally. God knows if its still there though...

I find firefox a little bloatware
It's inequivically NOT bloatware. At all. It may be slow for you and your computer, but there's nothing to bloat it up in Firefox itself.

I'm surprised so many people recommend AVG.

From the horror stories I've heard AND seen first hand I could NEVER recommend AVG to anyone.

I have VET myself. It's so simple, just set and forget, the updates download automatically without the user having to worry about if its updated or not.
And unlike other paid for Antivurs apps, the renewal cost for 2nd and subsequent years is only half of the original subscription cost.

I've been using Vet for over 4 years now and not a single problem ever.

As for firewalls, I use ZoneAlarm. I've heard the new versions are not so good, which is why I still use version 3.

And anyone who doesn't use Firefox or Opera is fooling themselves.

@iignotus: you can't be running Windows. Anyone running Windows without a virus scanner is just asking for trouble, no matter how careful you are.

Well to be honest, unix variants are my main squeeze, especially being a developer. However, when I run Windows (XP), which was/is often, all I have is a firewall. That's all I need, and that's all people really need to have if they use common sense. Viruses are usually from not using common sense, but worms are absolutely ruthless.

I generally recommend an antivirus also, because you can never be too careful, I suppose. But that firewall is my sole protector, and all that I need to stay safe (along with an updated system).

ZoneAlarm is not an AntiVirus.

The commercial version has one included.

If you get viruses that install browser helper objects and other crap like that, you should try HijackThis.

I use HijackThis whenever I get viruses. The only time I've gotten viruses is when I had an apache server running.

When you use HijackThis, you just google stuff in the list that looks suspicious, and you'll come up with other people's logs usually on message boards, with pros saying whether or not to "fix" the object in question.

HijackThis really helped me get rid of some really annoying stuff! I once had a virus that turned the first page of any google search into a spam page. o_O

AVAST

Tried AVG when i went for reinstall with 2000 as heard a lot of people used it

I found it poor tbh, the month i had it on my pc got by quite a few trojans in that time.. barely had one for 3 years and it was shite at getting rid of them. I had to manully remove one of the buggers.

Went back to AVAST which i had been using for 2 years and my pc feels safe again :)
AVAST pretty much gets updates every 1 or 2 days lot more than.
