Beautiful landscapes are prettier than portraits

What are your feelings about that development?

Well, CPU performance and easy development would be good, but full-HD would be good as well. If you could integrate both, it would be awesome and would stand up to the competition.
 
Well the SoC can handle 1920x1200 via the hdmi out even if the screen can't.

I didn't know Pyra had any competition.  I guess it will win since I haven't heard of any of the alternatives.

My understanding is that the rotation chip applies only to the feed from the SoC to the screen - sits in the middle. Wouldn't the HDMI output still be 'unrotated' - and require more overhead to update?

I could be wrong - the HDMI could be getting fed after the rotation - but I understood the rotation to be limited to 720x1280?

So - would our HDMI run landscape at 720p full speed or 1080p stumbling and stuttering?

I believe it's outputted normally,  the chip handles the proper rotation of the screen..  However if this isn't the case, the HDMI output still can be driven separately or one at a time or in clone mode.. just as if it was another monitor.

The OMAP5432 is actually quite a beast for displays, outside of the HDMI 1.4a output, it can handle 3 other displays (2x MIPI DSI and a MIPI DBI-B/DPI).. 


Edit: also not sure how gaming performance will be if driving two displays..

The OMAP isn't outputting things rotated, it's the screen itself that's got the wrong orientation. The SoC outputs the correct 1280x720 landscape picture to both the LCD and the HDMI and the rotation chip takes care of converting that to a portrait image for the LCD.
 
I guess it should also be possible to set up a dual monitor configuration with the 1280x720 screen plus 1920x1080 HDMI output. Either as two separate monitors, or mirrored (either by downscaling for the built-in screen or by outputting only 1280x720 HDMI).
 
Aren't most PS4 / XBone games still running on 720p because the consoles are not powerful enough?

PS4 has a good chunk of games that actually render at 1080p, it's the XBone that seems to have a bit of issues rendering full HD. some games drop all the way down to 720p, but some get rendered at 900p and scaled up.
