The PC World Is A Cluster Duck


Cooking occasionally can be interesting, but needing to do so daily would be a great annoyance. Additionally, attempting to eat healthily without a lot of effort is tricky, so I support Soylent-like products in principle. Of only it was solid so that one would not need to spend minutes mixing it up (and washing the mixer bottle)... That is, what I really desire is "everything my body needs" in the form of a chocolate bar or a biscuit -- eaten straight from the packaging.


Regarding computers: if you are an adult and you want a desktop, build it yourself; it is educational.
 
Having to eat is irritating.


It's a corporeal consideration I wish would go away.


Can't see a way past that while strapped to this miniature ecosystem of organisms that constitute my corporeal vessel.


If I could implement a passive maintenance system, I would be on it in a flash.

Nah man, too much work. I rather buy a casing, a motherboard and a chip, then assemble it. Melting rock to get the copper, melting sand to get silica... too much work.


It can be done though, the BMOW (Big Mess of Wires) does exist, and my all-time-favourite: the Zikzak ...

Ah, pedantry. I am good at this, but well-played sir/madam. Still, when we say that someone has built a house, we usually do not mean to imply that that someone fired their own bricks or mixed their own mortar or collected coal and ore to smelt steel in a blast furnace they constructed earlier -- often, indeed, there is no implication that the individual in question has even touched the house.


If one buys a PC that lacks RAM, and then inserts appropriate RAM, has one built a computer? Have you considered the Ship of Theseus?

Very interesting. I had a read. Then had to stop because of brain overheating. Will think it over and give you a proper answer (my opinion of which side I choose).


Immediately I can point out that our bodies do the same. Each organ replaces itself after a few months (some take longer, some less). But there, the added complexity is that it is the cells that have split. (if a cell splits, and one dies, is it the same cell? On an atomic level, some atoms "could" stay in there for ever).


Uh-oh.... recursive thinking is melting my brain again. I have to pause a bit...

No I'm very well aware where they got the name from. Have been quite actively following the company since the original Kickstarter. But I was referencing the hipster food replacement powder, not the green stuff from Soylent Green.


Although mass cannibalism would solve both overpopulation and world hunger. Will have to pursue that idea a bit more.

I honestly don't understand the fuss with burying used and vacated bodies in this big elaborate sentimental ceremony... what a waste of space and protien.


Have the ceremony if you must for personal closure, but for heaven's sake - recycle the body... the person has probably left enough of a damaging footprint on the planet... so the least they could do is give a little back when they are done with the body.


I don't think humans would be very palatable if the meat were just repackaged...so I would suggest processing the whole body to make a range of products from protien powders to mineral suppliments, to fetilizer.


Processing living humans would be a problem... but if euthenasia could be made legal, and the value a human body represents along with 'one less mouth to feed' could be calculated and offered to people particularly in poorer countries... that money could go to their families...
 
I think due to the accumulation of heavy metals and whatnot human bodies are considered toxic waste around here.

Perhaps even the metals could be re-used.


(I would rather not eat anything at all, but if animals are going to be eaten... I see that as about horrific as eating human flesh, so why not go the whole hog and process humans as well)

I don't think we should eat each other, otherwise we'd loose the few remaining humanity we have. But some form of recycling would be nice.


After all, we can't keep a relative in a cemetary forever anyway. When we're done with life, our bodies are nothing but an enveloppe. We should not celebrate the body but the soul it incarnated.


If it could spare us killing animals for the sake of feeding zoos, it would be worth it IMHO.


On-topic : I don't have faith in IT companies either. I like NVIDIA, but I'm not an utter fanboy : if AMD got better, I'd go all the way for them. It's just that they're not as good as NVIDIA. :p


I'm not a community-centered guy at all, but it sure feels good to be part of a small group, designing and using better hardware and software for everyone who wants them.


Even if the Pyra isn't cheap in any way, I like the fact that it's worth the price : we pushed it as far as we could, it's not some crapware designed in half a month just to mass-produce and mass-market it at 300% it's value. With the Pyra, the retail price is a fair price.


That's what I don't like about Apple. They make great products, friendly, reliable and powerful, but they're not consumer-oriented at all. First, it's way too expensive considering its actual power. And it's got stuff most people wouldn't use.


Take a MacBook Pro. It's got great power, with a cool design and everything. But for most non-professional users, who cares about an IPS Retina display ?


Removing stuff which aren't purely power-related would probably halve the price and still be good enough for most buyers.


The Pyra is much like a MacBook Pro in fact. It's got the best we could find, almost no matter the cost. But it's not the same. We can't do many different versions, and most of us actually want these features. And we won't sell it with a huge margin.


Enough with the Apple-bashing anyway. It's just a well-known example for a common practice. Alienware is just as bad as Apple in that way.

World hunger is actually a solved problem, it's a matter of distribution, not a lack of resources.  Finding a way to convert people into food solves a problem that doesn't exist but you're still left with the problem of proper distribution.


Besides, it's not just a matter of poisonous metals, most people tend to die due to old age or illness, the result of both is generally significantly lowered body mass: people who die of natural causes are not very nutritious; young and healthy people that die in accidents aren't really common enough to make a noticeable impact in food supply at all.


There'd also be a huge issue of disease control.  A flock of cows can be kept effectively isolated, their contact with other bovine is minimized so you can generally test for known diseases by region but a human being comes into direct contact with dozens of people every day which cascades out and over 80 years who knows what you've actually got in your gut that isn't affecting you but may kill someone else who doesn't have immunity to it.  There are also diseases that only affect certain animals, so even if a cow does get sick it's probably not something a human has to worry about and vice versa, whereas every disease a human carries is by definition something that could infect another human.


The whole idea is just a logistics nightmare, a catastrophic outbreak waiting to happen.


edit: to add something relevant to what you were saying about wasteful burials, what would make a huge impact is mandatory organ harvesting: an old person's kidney probably still works just fine, it's not doing them any good, why should it go in the ground instead of some kid?

This is exactly why I'm thinking about organ donation after I pass out. But here in France, I heard you actually have to pay to donate. Or at least that's what I heard about donating to science.
 
Here in Ontario it's just a series of checkboxes on your drivers license application.

Two major pet peeves of mine are:

1. Having to revolve my life around redundant tasks instead of streamlining everything I find boring.
2. Spending money on things that I don't get to enjoy later on.

For this reason I gone with Soylent. It doesn't cost me too much and is delivered to me. Just add water.
 
You might as well like to check what comes from your water tap. Chlorine, residuals from nuclear power plants' cooling systems, etc.


While water is the primary thing you need to live, there might be things in it that could cause your death...


Have a look at Brita and more powerful stuff : you may want to get rid of stuff non H²0-related ;)

Yes, and mind, that cannibalism can cause the Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease which wasn't unusual in cannibalistic tribes.

I'm only eating ice cream that is based on coconut, soy, rice or lupine and especcially the coconut based ice cream from Asia is quite good although still quite unknown in the west. We got a big import complex around here for such things. I haven't been able to get lupine ice cream for a while though, quite a shame.

According to a recent QI episode, 100% water is almost actively bad for you, in that it dilutes your blood too effecively, and something about your kidneys not being used to handling stuff so pure.  I'm not quite sure I buy that, but there, but to play safe, having a few natural salts in your otherwise 100% pure water probably isn't a bad thing.


Mind you, those salts will probably have a few parts per million of unstable isotopes, otherwise known as the background radiation.  But you get that from your surroundings anyway, and everything else you eat or drink.
