Your thoughts on Legend Of Zelda: Breath of The Wild?

Pretty much agree with you there. The Nintendo of today seems to have forgotten the way forward and is mostly just stuck behind a wall without any intention of really getting past it :/
I do intend to get Breath of the Wild eventually, but to me it really looks like a "me, too" game. Honestly, I'm actually happy it's a "me, too", because it'll at least have GOOD GAME DESIGN. I've been wanting a good proper open world action-adventure or RPG from Nintendo and they still haven't fulfilled that wish. The Xenoblade games are both regarded to be master pieces for whatever deranged reason, but I found them either dull because of the boring battle system or tiring due to all the padding. I found The Last Story to be way funner, and the story actually kept me interested. I know Xenoblade was SUPPOSED to have the better story, but I fell asleep after a few hours.
But yeah, nowadays I can't trust Nintendo to make good sequels to games like Paper Mario, Star Fox, Metroid, and Fire Emblem (especially Fire Emblem, I can't comprehend how crap games like Awakening and Fates can be so popular....well actually I kind of can, as things like SAO and that one anime/manga series with that dude trying to get girls in dungeons or something are popular) anymore.

A fine example though is A Linke between worlds. That was a really, really awesome Zelda game. It wasn't boring to find all secrets, no backtracking, very polished game.
I seem to remember a swampy bit in one of the bottom corner that you had to switch back to the first world which felt quite backtracky. And I remember running round all the old locations towards the end for some dig quest or other I think, which was quite repetitive, but I think that may have been optional, and I was trying to extend the game to completion, I'm not sure..

@Jumpman you make some good examples. As I suspected, my purchasing is quite selective - I bought the first NSMB on DS but got bored before finishing it, so never bought another one. And no new IP is a valid point, but I think the Japanese industry as a whole has a problem with new IP. What's the last new IP actually developed by Sega - Billy Hatcher perhaps? Sonic Transformed was developed by Sumo digital, a British code house, FWIW (who also did the Outrun 2 home ports for Sega back in the day). And don't get me started on SqEnix who since a cult DS game, have only hit my newfeeds for new Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games. At least the games aren't completely identical to their namesakes of old, but for completely new (if derivative) characters and plots, you need a western developer. Or maybe Japanese publishers don't publsh the more unusual games outside of Japan.

So they're bringing it to PC then?

This would be the only way to sell it to me, if it's also DRM free and on Linux of course.
They won't get me to buy proprietary hardware for a single game (or a few more) ever again.

@Klumpen: what was the reason to be anti-nintendo? I know why I am anti-$ony (how they behaved against Linux on PS3 and how they robbed MJJ)

Not N in particular, I just see no reason to get something that is basically a PC with lots of extra DRM and prioprietary nonsense. Amiibos were about the epitome of what I hate (hardware DRM for unlocking day-1 "DLC"s).
Twenty years ago consoles were something quite different on the hardware level already and the gaming landscape was vastly different in general but these days I think supporting game consoles is the wrong thing to do.

ah, ok I understand your point now.

probably gonna get murdered for saying it's mildly ok, definitely not the 3rd best game ever made in history according to certain review websites.
6/10

I liked the review from jimquisition.
This is a game with a wonderful world and too many little problems. I would also give it 7/10.
I am happy Nintendo tried to change Zelda. I think they didn't succeed however with this 1st try.

I actually adore this game. Been playing it nonstop on my Wii U and it is so well balanced and polished - I wish more games would come out in that kind of state.
Only gripe are the frame drops on the Wii U, but they are not too frequent to be really annoying.

I have played numerous open world games (and also dark souls), and I actually think Nintendo took most of the best mechanics of other titles including their own franchise and put them in so well that it just brings a smile to my face. There is nothing in the game I could point out that needs changing. This includes the prices and amounts of materials defining the amount of grind that needs to put in.
There is actually meaningful character development until the very end, which is so rare in open world games and keeps on being challenging being about 80 hours in. Normally you are just overpowered once you spend 30 hours of game time and face roll through the later parts.

Where I need to take a point off, is the fact they cut away the second screen on the Wii U, so that the switch version would not be inferior. While I get that from a political standpoint, I do miss the inventory screen like on Ocanina of time on 3DS on the second screen. Best Inventory solution for consoles imho.

Artwork is superb and quest actually make me want to do them, not like so many other Open world titles, where I never feel compelled to do much more than the story quests. I guess I will get as many hours if not more out of this game than I got out of Witcher 3. Rating wise it is definitely in the same ballpark as Witcher 3 - although I like it better in Breath of the wild that there is absolutely no hand holding like quest markers or markings on the map, so you know where to go. That kills kills all the rewards of going out and exploring.

When I think about it I think this game will be on my Top 2 spot of my personal favourite games. Top one is and will always be (of course) Gothic 1.

As for me, i fricking hate this game because it is a ripoff of Dark Souls !
Same inventory system, same minimap, same gameplay, everything !
2/10 Would not play this game ever again !!!
Are you even serious?
Don't get me wrong, you're free to hate Zelda as much as you like. But I find your claims debatable.

Dark Souls did not reinvent any wheels. There's a ton of 3d Brawler games before Dark Souls that have target lock on and set attack combos.

I don't think Zelda has endurance when it comes to fighting. Does it? That'what makes the combat in DS deliberate, requiring planning. Making it somewhat special. Zelda is just bashing away.

By inventory system you mean games that use the otherwise unnecessary d-pad for quick item switch? What about basically every shooter on most modern consoles? Again, DS did not reinvent the wheel.

Have you even played Dark Souls? It does not have a minimap. It has memorable, hand-crafted surroundings that are easy to navigate without one.

Edit:

Dark Souls is, for me personally, only a modern Gothic 1 or 2 with a different theme and obscure story. The latter even had the "learn how to fight" thing going for it in character progression. I can only remember one other game that made the character clumsily swing their weapon when untrained: Fable. Gothic did it better still. I don't have high hopes for Elex though. Too much open world again I fear. Let's hope they can make it vastly more interesting than Gothic 3 and refrain from including MMORPG-ish collect and kill quests. I still hate you passionately, Dragon Age Inquisition.

I find it sad that Zelda has stepped into the open world trap. As TB has put it so fittingly: The size of an ocean, the depth of a paddling pool. The interesting thing about open worlds is one thing alone: the vastness. The bad thing is that it spaces out all the interesting stuff, which is a drawback for the player.

And don't get me started on how quickly weapons degrade in this game. I'm watching a let's play and can't stop shaking my head. The game treats consumables and throw-away weapons like treasure. Where there was an air of excitement about opening chests in the older games - insert chest jingle here - it's now down to a bland "oh yet another thing I'll use for a minute and not give a damn about".

Ahh, games. Passion.

I'm still looking forward to playing it, as I just haven't had the time. The only Zelda game I never really cared for was Wind Waker, as the art style was the only quality there I liked, the overall game fell very flat for me.

Every other game has had things I liked, and stuff I didn't like. But I've enjoyed the series very much over the years, but the 2D games have always been my favorite, but BotW looks very interesting. I'll report back once I get around to playing it. Hopefully that doesn't take me until the next game in the series gets released. LOL

First off let me say what I've experienced at this point is about 10hrs on Wii U & I've just got to Kakariko Village.. so far I've had no significant performance issues, a little bit of slowdown in said village but otherwise no problems at all & it's looking/performing great with plenty of stunning vistas.

My initial thoughts thus far are one of the best games I have ever played & that's saying something being an original Atari 2600 owner & having pretty much every console you can think of/various PC builds over the years.. I'll not bore folk with the minutiae (unless asked) but suffice to say there is an absolutely staggering attention to detail here in pretty much everything I've experienced so far, the combat is particularly challenging on anything other than the by the numbers enemies & bit of a (pleasant) shock to the system, how on earth Nintendo have managed to achieve what they have on Wii U hardware without it running at single digit fps is simply astonishing afaic. Can't remember when I last wanted to come home & fire up a game as much as I do for this particular one but suffice to say I'm enjoying it immensely so far, the amount of different gameplay systems that just work with each other is mind boggling & I'll bet I haven't seen anything yet.

I'm certain this game wil become a changer and am as positive as I'll ever likely be about anything that other dev studios will be looking to it and implementing it's systems/processes going forward.

I actually just started the Wii U game a few nights ago, and I'm to early yet to say much either way. I'm a few hours in, and the graphics are nice, but nothing jaw dropping. The inventory and breakable weapons are something I could do without, as having to manage inventory is just something else that breaks up the overall feel for me, and I really don't play games where that is a "thing" so it's not for me currently.

I'll for sure report back as I get more in to the game, but so far I'm not tripping over myself to play it, but I grab it when I get a few minutes. I do like how there is really nothing explained, as "N" has gotten overboard with the tutorials in recent years, so it's nice to not have them bothering you ever few seconds with some helper.

I may actually pick up the Wii U version when the Wii U emulator gets to the point of running it well.

Welp, playing on the Wii U and it's a really fun game. It just runs like incredible crap.
All I can hope is that Nintendo releases performance patches, but with Wii U dead I doubt it.

That bad, eh?

@kuro: funny you should say that. ("throw away weapons"), had the same feeling in "izuna" for the NDS. stuff broke too quickly.

Quite. Apparently Switch owners who play in handheld mode have no problems, but the game feels like it isn't optimized at all on Wii U despite it being the lead platform.
Almost feels like what niche Japanese devs do where they don't bother at all to optimize their games for the lead platform (usually Vita) and just port the games to something more powerful (PS4 and PC) and expect their games to just run better. Except Nintendo can be forgiven a bit more for it due to the game's scale. Still, this is rather bad considering it's a Nintendo game as you'd think they would put more care into their games.
