OpenSource Standalone Smartwatch

It is really strange for me,
I think that all of those "smart watches" are fucking useless,
They are just another battery in your life.

Just get yourself an solar Casio G-Shock, it is way more fasionable and functional.

Not sure if members care about being fashionable but I like the idea of a solar watch. On the other hand the G-shock is too limited in features imo. I would like to see a programmable watch that can share data with my pc. Doesn't have to be wireless and I don't need to receive mail, whatsapp, twitter notifications on my watch.

Programmable in the sense of plugins like rockbox has. Just small scripts/programs that enhance the usefulness of the watch without sacrificing battery life. As long as you need to charge a smartwatch daily or even monthly I agree a smartwatch is not very useful and more of a problem than a solution.

IDK, but in terms of actually usefull features on a wrist watch,
The G-Shock Range Man, nailed it.

- It is solar,
- Have a automatic calibration with the radio towers of the atomic clocs arround the globe (just like NTP :p)
- Compass, Altimeter, Barometer + Thermometer (in order to get accurate temperature readings you need to take it off for 20 minutes)
- It is rugged
- All other features that every electronic watch have, like start/stop timer, time zone selection, sunrise/sunset, and so on.

I wear it every single day for several years now, for me it is the ULTIMATE watch.

While it's nice to see some discussion on these boards, most of it completely misses the OP's subject:

A free software, watch-format PHONE.

I'm watching the market and although there are some low-power displays available (memory TFT etc), the mass market is ignoring them.

To get an idea of how cheaply these can be built - here's a watch with phone function - for 6 euro

Edit: I expect these are clearance prices, as too many regions seem to be dropping GSM. I think the original prices were around $25-30

Klumpen was looking for a "standalone wristwatch with basic phone capabilities, headset-jack, a long battery life"
Your example is depending on an (Android) phone.

[edit] just checked the faq of the link and it mentioned the watch can indeed accept a SIM card. I didn't expect to see that.. especially not for that price. I am even tempted to buy one to see how good it works....

TBH, outside of using my Garmin for running, I liked that it was programmable, so I could put birthdays on the watch face; and then Garmin did some updates and broke my watch face and my apps, and I could never be bothered developing for it since. Still use it as a watch though, because it is actually quite nice, and looks professional, and it does have a great battery life

Ah, you must have one of the later forerunners which lasts all day. I only have one of the original ones, which has more features as you exercise, but pegs out after a few hours of uptime. And I've never even considered updating it - I did once pull the data off of it to backup my data, but I've forgotten now even how to do that on linux.

Well two major problems with mine. 1) Cannot use the onscreen keyboard - even with a capacitative stylus. So adding and editing contacts is impossible. 2) Mine won't connect with any SIM I tried.

I hear it's possible to store contacts on a SIM card, but I don't know if mine can do it, or how.
