hi to all

i'm working with a few friends at an essay for our school, something like a graduation work
We've chosen the topic "the digitization in sport" for our work
Basically we investigate why e-sport gets pushed recently and how well-know this topic in different places/forums/social-media is

For this reason, I ask you to participate in this survey
It will take around 5 minutes

## problems with posting the link, it will come later ##

If you know more intressting place for this survey, pleas inform me

thanks in advance
maesi

If you're aiming to gain an unbiased impression of the general public's views, I'd say the most important thing is to survey multiple populations, likely to have different backgrounds.

I mean, here, you'll find a very high level of technical ability, and enthusiasm for traditional games. My young cousin thinks nothing of spectator gaming and regards it as normal. If you asked my grandmother, she'd have no idea what you're on about.

Personally, I've zero interest (except in the anthropological sense) in competitive activities of any kind, active or spectator, sport or otherwise. I feel I maybe be something of a minority in that respect...

E-sports are all right, but they've gotta find a better name. Here in America, at least, the term sport tends to imply some sort of motion by the participants. Even the NASCAR guys here are like, "Well, at least our cars is movin'. Them e-sports fellers just stay in the same spot the whole time!"

Hmm, Binky said "spectator gaming" just now; that has a nice ring to it.

I was wondering what kind of weird thing an "e-sport" could be ... but as I understand it's just a videogame competition

I watch some Hearthstone streams sometimes. I see it mainly as a marketing tool for the game editor as they are investing money and effort to promote these competitions.
I answered your survey.

@Binky
That's actually the plan for this survey. Different versions of this will be publicized through different channels (forums, facebook, instant-messengers, etc)
It will be interesting to see how different the outcome is with this way...

@JDTAY
I think the main problem is the definition of sport...
At the Olympic-games there is a shooting championship. And there is the goal to keep calm and not to move...

@Wally
Thanks a lot for your help, that's the downside with a good spam filter

@kaprikawn
You're right. I will change it in the not publicized versions.

@benoitb
Another focus of our essay is the business-models behind e-sport.
Unlike in other sport, the publishers have the whole monopoly. They can sell the game itself, make items/skins for microtransaction, sell license for events and so on.
If it doesn't work, they simply shut the whole thing down.

What about traditional/offline channels? There are many people who never use computers to interact with strangers, but I'd still be interested in whether or not they know what esports are.

No, E-sports is the globally accepted term. If US citizens (assuming America means USA in this context) have a problem with that then that is their problem. Chess is also commonly seen as a sport and is not very heavy on motion either.

Chess is also commonly seen as a sport

It is?
As a boring person who doesn't do these 'competition' things, I can very authoritatively say that, until the knights are riding flesh & blood equines, chess is a board game.

So there!

It is sometimes referred to as a mind sport. While it is debated, several national sports organizations recognize it as a sport.

That said, the prime example of e-sports would be Starcraft. Even if you see motion/physical exertion as an important requirement, high level Starcraft players sustain more than 300 actions per minute for over an hour. That's a lot of tiring hand/wrist motion.
