Hmm... I'm starting to feel more hopeful that I may get my Pyra before Brexit (now delayed until late October).

However, celestial buttholes is a much more savoury topic than Brexit any day.

Yep, it's apparently a picture of the core of M87, a supergiant elliptical galaxy in Virgo, inside the Milky Way. The milky way is also a galaxy, and I wasn't aware before today that you could have galaxies inside galaxies, but apparently you do. I guess they just haven't come up with a decent name for the super-galaxies yet.
There seems to be some confusion, because, before the press conference happened, the media was speculating which black hole was photographed.

"Virgo" is a group of galaxies. "M87" is one of the galaxies in "Virgo". But "Virgo" is not inside our galaxy.

Inside our galaxy is also a black hole, but a smaller one ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagittarius_A* ). The photo is not the black hole inside the milky way, but the black hole inside "M87".

Yes, quite right. It seems I mis speed read that wikipedia article on M87. It's in our local universe, and we can see it (not sure if that's a tautology), but it's not in the millky way. There's speculation that the black hole in Saguittarius might actually be the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy, but I guess they need to measure the speed of more stars before they can be sure of that.

I guess the milky-way is liable to have more than one black hole in it. And elliptical or spiral galaxies it's crashed into will likely have their own black holes inside them, although these might dissipate in time as the amount of matter being fed into them reduces as things in its maw start orbiting the new central galactical black hole rather than being on an inexorable path into itself, but then again maybe there's more material in the new galaxy for it to feed on; it's a matter of fluid dynamics I suspect. And then again, we're not sure if and how black holes can dissipate; is it a matter of the quasar energy emitted being relatively static, so you starve it and it dies, or maybe you need to fill them up by feeding them until they pop, or maybe they just never die and can only really be subsumed into a larger black hole to stop them being an independent concern?

i still think he's an hero and deserves the highest respect for what he has done.
Running and claiming amnesty when he'd due to be sent to Sweden to account for rape allegations? Big hero.

But yeah, I support him in publishing documents from the secret state. Just a shame he decided to fight the british legal system in a valid extradition request, and they are much less likely to look favourably upon him now.

If anything, I suggest he should have permitted them to take him to sweden. He'd probably have got a better hearing about an extradition request from the US with the Swedish courts than the US's bum chum, Great Britain.

Hmm.. a WorldNews <-> ACTA2 <-> Absurdism Corner crossover...

Wikileaks update: Manning refused to be patriotic and testify, again, but in secret without a defendant and got locked up for obstruction of justice. Say what you want, but she's got balls!

Hunchback of Notre Dame is seeking a new home.
ps: Don't hire that company to do your house renovation!
I did not know the USA president was also a newscaster!
Oakwood burns a lot it will probably all be consumed by the fire.
One firefighter died. (trying to rescue historical art)
I hope the outer stone stays up. And the tower does not collapse.
Ouch, just saw a vitral explode. The background singing in the life feed is soothing.

(I would like to have feedback of French as what does this symbol means to them. Is it just a tourist attraction, or something more?)

It was a great building for me. Very 'imposant'. My heart is with you, France. Lot's of pics in the Dutch news

Maybe you can help?

I passed by it every Friday when I lived in Paris went out for a drink with friends. I went inside once to listen to an organ concert. It was loud.
That's the extent of my "relationship" with that building.
I don't feel that strongly about it, but it's always a bit sad to lose a part of history like this

but to construct entire edifices of thought.
Not unlike the Pyra, which is fruit of open-technology (be it software or hardware) minded people. And a group of investors around the project...

Woah: https://lwn.net/Articles/786422/

I've never felt the need to use it myself, but understand that labs all over the world use it. I guess all it really does it install a sensible stock of packages for physics users, and hopefully in the ongoing centos can at least maintain a metapackage that gives you that and a few lines of instructions to achieve it in less than a full afternoon on a base centos installation, which should minimise the number of noses put out of joint.

I've never actually set up a centos machine before though, and only ever used it over a ssh connection to text mode, so I'm not sure what the install process is like.

It's as easy as installing Debian. Just a a bootable CD/usb stick and a few questions (with mouse and keyboard).

I expect you need to add a repository in Centos, then yum update and yum install SL (or similar), to get SL. Not unlike adding EPEL to a RH/Centos/SL

The drawback?

The dependency on the Linux core components coming directly from Centos.
For example (even if silly): If you have need of certain version of Python, and upstream updates the version, well, your software-that-runs-on-that-version-of-python breaks. In the past, all you had to do is hold back those components until the SL package is ready. Can be worked around that problem by adding strict version dependencies, or distributing the Python version with the software (thus, in the SL repository).
The other way is to be at the mercy of upstream and have nightly builds and tests to check if things break and update the SL repo to hold back certain updates, then quickly fix packages.

Also: IBM bought RH. And if they do what they always do, then they are going to rebrand and rename all RH packages... so they need to keep their eyes open on testing.
