Pyra news partially stale from the dragon's mouth

Great news, seems like we're getting close to having review units now! Also I'm pretty sure there's a trademarked bi-lunar joke in here somewhere.

Nope, as review units won't be shipped before the preorders :)
The reason is simple: A lot of preorders are from Pandora users. They remember how well the Pandora OS matured over time, so they're not disappointed when the software doesn't work out of the box from the beginning.
Reviewers would just say "this and that doesn't work", and this doesn't help us.

Thanks for the news
Any plan on
"when he finds time to go to Greece to make sure everything is fine."?

Well, I want to visit GC next week for the pre-production run. They don't know yet when this exactly will happen (could be I'll be informed 24 hours before that), so I can't book a flight to Greece now.
As soon as that is done, I'll check the available flights as well as my other appointments (mainly ice hockey games) and will book according to that.

Yeah, the reviews of all the lately retro-gaming handhelds are simple: "the interface is this, you select game with arrows and press button to play".

I think that calling the Pandora a "console" in advertising wasn't the best choice, because it directs the mind to something that does one thing, as simply as that...

Should be better to point out very well what a Pyra is... maybe inventing a cool new term like in the 80's...

"This is NOT just a Console !! This is NOT just a Handheld Computer !! IT'S A HANDSOLE !!" (or maybe "A COMPSOLE !!")

...or well something like that :p

4. aTc working on moving to a more recent kernel for PyraOS which should fix more bugs. :D
Alright - looking forward to this. Is he working his way down a list or? From my random stumbling around, things are already mostly better than I'd feared.

Do we know what area / functionality hes going to be concentrating on next? Battery/charging? Media playback (H.264)? Other?

I assume he's working on a newer kernel. I don't know which one off the top of my head, although I guess 5.4 is the next and only LT release deemed to expire. Or he could be working on 5.5 to stay ahead of the curve I dunno.

And to the point I don't know what that will deliver. As a user of Arch which mainly keeps track of the mainline kernel, I find stuff I've bought the more recently and connected to my computer as getting better, but most other things just theoretically improving at best.

And Brexit just happened...
Well, not quite. Officially it happens at midnight between today (31st Jan) and tomorrow (1st Feb) UTC+1, which is 23:00 UK time.

Not a lot happens then, as there is a (currently) one-year 'transition period', during which there is regulatory alignment between the UK and the EU. After 31 Jan 2021 what happens is still anyone's guess. But the Rubicon is just about to be crossed, and the UK will no longer be an EU member. Quite a few European politicians will privately be very happy at that, some because the UK has been seen as a brake on the continuing progress of the 'European project', and others because it gives hope to nationalist causes in several other EU member states.
If the UK were, at some point in the future, to apply to re-join, it is pretty certain that the advantageous deals the UK currently (until 23:00) has will no longer be on offer.
If nothing else, it is a very interesting experiment in economics. I just hope those who do not benefit from the experiment are not hit too hard. It also affects the voting dynamics in the EU, as decisions within the Council of the European Union in many policy areas can be decided by qualified majority voting so the exit of the UK, as one of the largest 6 states, has a significant effect.

In terms of the Pyra: it gives ED a headache in dealing with buyers from the UK; and buyers in the UK will probably have more bureaucracy and expense in getting one sent there, whch will probably also mean it will take longer for a delivery to be completed after ED has dispatched it.

Other European politicians will be privately hopeful because the Brexshit fallout will discourage other member states from wanting to follow suit and therefore wipe out any credibility the Far Right has left...

I wish a moderator would move the off-topic Brexit stuff to the off-topic area.

We get so many news threads derailed that it makes it hard for people who don't check in daily to keep up with the latest developments.
Tbf it was just a couple of corrections - and the thread’s still on page 2! ;) Other derailings have gone on much longer aha.

But point taken, I’m mildly disappointed when a new comment notification isn’t a Pyra status update :)

It's hard to keep up with things as most threads get derailed easily als nobody ever reports anything so yeah.

Also I just woke up and won't be doing it until later :p

Indeed, though I'm hoping he gets it out before the end of this year, so that he can rely on the maintenance of trading relations for the vast majority of orders. And don't forget he already has customers in the US and elsewhere around the world, so in reality it should just be like that for the UK orderers in the end as well, and the charging of most dues will probably happen at the border and we'll start having to go to our post offices to collect and pay the excess on stuff from him. It may make sense to have someone in the UK provide support as Link did during the Pandora's launch in the US (and he who must not be mentioned had a stab at it as well).

Yep, I guess we shouldn't forget I only ordered my Pandora in the second batch, although that was mainly because I'd pretty much given up on it being real given the lack of news and snarky comments happening on the boards around those times, so it was only once I saw real evidence of units shipping that I became confident enough to place and order, which required a paid rescue from ED in the end to save it. I'm much more confident that the Pyra isn't some massively elaborate scam.
