That article seems confused about who mask wearing is intended to protect. The first statement talks about people wearing masks spraying less fluid around, but then somewhat extraordinarily says that if you wear a mask you're less likely to receive a dose.

That may be true, but the second paragraph doesn't really follow from the first. It's true that if more people wear masks less people are likely to be affected as badly, but that's because if you've got it but don't know, wearing a mask is more likely to trap a lot of the dose from leaving your face.

It's why I wear a mask. I don't think I've got it, but I haven't been tested so I don't really know, so it's only polite of me to wear a mask when I'm out. I have to breathe through my mouth when wearing a mask and hillwalking, I can't get enough air through my nose when my breathing is elevated and I'm wearing a mask. And when I breathe in through my mask, it gets sucked to my face, so I'm sucking in air under pressure through a small circle of the mask, which will filter it to a degree. When I breathe out it mostly goes out the sides of the mask, with a little through the top depending on how well I've formed the metal strip against my face when I fitted it. The air taking a 90 degree turn means most fluds don't make the turn and soak into the fabric against my mouth, and a lot of the humidity in my air soaks into the fabric along the sides as it cools. I don't know whether the virus can be effectively dissolved in air the way humidity is, but I'd expect a lot of my dose if I've got one to be also trapped in the fabric.

@levi, they're saying you'll receive less of a dose if you're exposed but wearing a mask, and smaller dose == less sick. this is a "selfish" reason to wear a mask.

but yes, other articles discuss how it's better to wear a mask to prevent other people from getting it if you have it unknowingly. this is an "altruistic" reason to wear a mask.

if you must have only one mask between two people, i think the efficacy of the altruistic mask wearer is better than that of the selfish mask wearer, but having both would be even better.

Yeah, but the way it's written, it provides evidence that wearing a mask will result in less virus coming from you, then switch to talking about how you receiving less of a dose will produce less effects. Like I say, I dunno how much filtering my mask does for me, and if most people around are wearing a mask it results in less free floating virus which is good for everyone, but they seem to be saying you should wear a mask because it improves *your* chances of surviving the virus, which I don't think is shown by the evidence so far.

Yeah, I'm tempted to say that we're already in it in the UK. So far though it's out of the care homes, so it's not as deadly this time round. So far it seems to be in the kids and their parents ages, although god knows what'll happen when they visit gran

I think most people getting it nowadays are younger, as they socialize a bit more or need to go to school/work.
But what you see is that they'll measure death count and hospitalization, which isn't a long term indicator.
They could have lost 10 years of their life, but we'll only hear that later when ex-covid patients die earlier then average.

Austria just confirmed they are in a second wave btw.

The Netherlands just jumped in rank to place 40, overtaking the official numbers reported by China.
India is looking to be growing faster every day, it's magic China suddenly stopped at 85.000, they probably stopped reporting numbers.

The Netherlands is picking-up the pace and is in place 39, overtaking Sweden. Going on like this they'll be at place 38 within a few days.
UK, Belgium and France might really be picking-up the second wave also, Germany is luckily not at that point yet.

Funny, I think it was a graph showing tested cases per 1000, and denmark was left off the graph on newsnight because their figures were so damn high. And in a following graph they showed that the graph showing something like the death rate following hospitalisation showed britain in a close second place after I think it was spain. As the great man (not Mark Twain, according to my internet research) said, Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics.

They (uk police) arrested a doctor (Heiko Schoning, or something like that) in Hyde park yesterday at a covid/lockdown protest rally. DuckDuckGo'ing his name seems like he's been touring

Who'd thought in the "information age" it'd be nigh on impossible to get any...

Get any what?

I see a lot of people not wearing masks and not socially isolating. That's a criminal offence currently, although that video is from after he started to be escorted away by the police, so I guess emotions were heated and while it's not right it's more excusable in that case. Also, the police weren't socially isolating or wearing masks, but I guess they're permitted. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
