I haven't got my GP2X yet... And will wait quite some time.
But here's bunch of various free open-source games, that might be portable. Or they might be too much for this handheld - some stuff is very 3D.

Secret Maryo Chronicles
http://www.secretmaryo.org/
A platformer about head-stomping guy eating running mushrooms but NOT about Mario.

Cube and Cube 2 aka Sauerbraten
http://cubeengine.com/
FPS, Quake 1 style.

Liberal Crime Squad
http://www.bay12games.com/lcs/
ASCII based strategy/RPG about cleaning US from conservatives by all means necessary including bad pick up lines, theft, kidnapping, mass murders, selling brownies, newspaper publishing, flag burning and clothes making. Must play.

TA3D
http://ta3d.darkstars.co.uk/
TA Spring
http://spring.clan-sy.com/
These two projects aim at recreating Total Annihilation RTS, but Spring also tries to be an independent engine, so the game runs quite well without TA files. Old builds might be more suitable for handheld, as current versions are full of resource-eating features.

Stratagus
http://stratagus.org/
Bos Wars
http://www.boswars.org/
Basically two 2D isometric RTS games/engines.

Decker
http://www10.caro.net/dsi/decker/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/decker
Hack'n'crash roguelike involving cyberspace, ICE, backdoors, servers of large corporations and tons of hardware and software.

Nether Earth
http://www.braingames.getput.com/nether/default.asp
A cute RTS from Spectrum ported to Windows. Customized units, optional direct control.

Globulation 2
http://www.globulation2.org/wiki/Main_Page
An RTS with indirect unit control.

Neverball
http://icculus.org/neverball/
Crazy test of skills. Mouse skills in original but I suppose for GP2X that could be a pad-killer.

TORCS
http://torcs.sourceforge.net/
Just a car racing game.

GearHead 1&2
http://gearhead.roguelikedevelopment.org/
Roguelike allowing both on-foot adventuring and combat on huge customizable mechs.

FreeCiv
http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
FreeCol
http://www.freecol.org/
Frankly I don't think GP2X will be able to handle this fast enough for comfortable gameplay. How fast is Java here? Oh, and singleplayer in those games is made via client-server link...

Anachronox
http://anachronox-modding.googlecode.com/s...nk/nAnachronox/
Technically it's Quake 2 engine. And source code for this particular game apparently has been reverse engineered which allowed several unofficial patched builds. So it might be worth porting if someone manages to squeeze at least 15 fps out of Q2.

FreeSpace2
http://scp.indiegames.us/news.php
Now that's a pure fantasy, however it's source is open... A little downgrading, a little usb joystick support...

Abuse
http://www.rocket-surgery.net/abuse/downloads.html
At least Windows port of this thing has source code.

torcs is definitely too heavy. and anything resembling quake 2 is gonna be a slide show. even out of the 2d ones on this list, most use opengl, which doesn't make it impossible, just a crapload of work, especially for games that don't have finished versions, and maybe never will :p

LCS looks cool though, have you seen dopewars2x?

abuse...gonna edit my post here...see here for a little more info:
http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showtopic=29486
http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showtopic=38691

it's possible namco was/is working on a port? either way, it's gonna be painful without a mouse. touch screen or not. but who knows.

anyway, i notice there's a lot of RTS games on the list. i think the main reason we don't have a lot of these (outside of emulation) is that they have complicated control schemes. but we have crimson fields...emulators for games like famicom wars, cannon fodder, and don't forget the gp2x original RetrovirusRTS.

ta3d/spring...without 3d hardware? what are you smoking i want some ;)

edit: confused cannon fodder with crimson fields yeesh

Nether Earth controls are perfectly simple - direction control, action button, zoom in/out, menu summon. Main menu requires numbers to select items though.
In Globulation 2 player's activities are mostly limited to placing buildings, if I remember correctly. That's the beaty of indirect control, but the thing will sure eat memory.

The abovementined LCS. You know, when six guys in trenchcoats enter an apartment building and go on a killing spree shooting off people's limbs and gutting security... and then get off shooting their way through police chase... and a couple of days later you have a full-blown police siege of your hideout, and hear shouts "Give us the kindnapped people"... that's GOOD  Goes well with Dead Kennedys' songs.

Oh, remembered another one:
Race Into Space
http://sourceforge.net/projects/raceintospace/
A very turn-based manager allowing you to lead either USA or USSR space program from the very beginning. You have to manage unit research, cosmonaut training, plan missions and schedule launches, balancing between safety of a well prepared project and necessity to do everything before your opponent from overseas does.

I've been preparing freeware games for coverdisk of a Russain PC game mag for over a year, and learned about quite a lot of free games. Now I just need to figure out what can be gp2x-ed.

You have me confused with icurafu. :)

The port I had on hold (until I get an F-200) was Atomic Tanks.

Out of all of those, Stratagus is the one I want the most. I can't even get it to work on the PC though. Got a tutorial?

There is a great port of stratagus for the Motorola A780. A780 has got an ARM cpu as well. CPU of the A780 is 312 Mhz though, so that could be an issue.

Works like a charm, the screen of the A780 is too small to play it very comfortable so would be nice to see it ported. I've seen some epic ports from Senor Quack lately, maybe he is ready for another battle ;)

Making use of the hardware blitter and perhaps disabling music might allow it to run.. It'll be my next project ;)

Wow... If you get Stratagus (better Wargus) to run that could allow Warcraft 2 on GP2X!

Uh... can you also have a look at Race Into Space? Although there's no port for this :gp2x kind of CPU. But it seems to be SDL based, the interface needs only mouse with one button and some letters and Enter for saving. Can GP2X handle ogg video?

And Nether Earth could look sooo nice on a small portable screen

Fantastic news, thanks! We don't have enough rts games for the GP2X, so this is really welcome.
A port for Stratagus has been asked for many times. No dev ever dared to take up the challenge.

Can't wait. I don't think it will be a problem to find testers for this game (if you need them). Consider me the first volunteer :)

Be careful. stratagus is not very efficient. It basically dumps all into memory. But if you use all of the 64MB, you should get the game plus sound. It looks ok at QVGA. It'll be a great port. :)
