well obviously not a celeron as we all know theyre useless. But which is the better between and Athlon XP+ and a P4. I know AMD processors arent marked up in ghz (i.e. a 2800+ processor is only 2.2ghz), but other than that I dont have a clue. Could anyone offer me a more detailed description of the differences, or suggest the better of the two without going YEAH BABY I WON A ATHLON AND IT OWNZ!!!! I FUCKING LOVE AMD!!!! etc...

2800+ means its the equivelant speed to a 2.8ghz P4

I would stick with AMD as AMD stuff is cheaper :)
 
The question is:

1) What have you already got (Is it for an upgrade).
2) What will the machines main use be.
3) How much can you afford, Not forgetting the cost of the motherboard too.

Personally i have always used AMD, Because they are the best value, price vs performance, Bang for bucks etc.

My previous Athlon, I think 1400 got insanely hot, I threw it into the North Pole and drowned Greenland with it. That did not come with a a fan/heatsink. My new CPU, the AMD 64 2800 (I think it's a 2800, I'll have to check) is wonderful, it comes with a fan & heatsink which is part of the warranty which makes me feel pretty secure about heat problems with this one as if AMD feels secure enough in giving a 3 year warranty with that CPU and heatsink then I should have no CPU heat woes which previous AMD CPU's are reputed to have.
 
Isnt it like AMD ATHLON chips have a lower clock speed but are faster (the clock speed doesent mean everything)... more efficient or something thus the 1800+ meaning they are like as good as the 1800 mhz processor chips even though it only runs at like 1566mhz or something.
 
Problem is: AMD is better than Intel - but most boards are shit.
Intel has better boards and therefore usually runs more stable.

If you go for a 64bit system (and don't want to use it as a huge server) AMD is way before Intel (in fact, Intel bought some patents from AMD because they had problems developping their 64bit system)
 
You can get AMD64 processors and boards almost as cheap as the non 64-bit versions nowadays. Just don't get Sempron!

Anyway, the Pentium 4 architecture sucks. Pentium 3 and Pentium-M are far better, but if you want high clock speeds for some reason (even though high clock speeds is only one of out a larger equation for CPU performance), they're not it. So if it's a comparison of AMD vs P4, AMD wins flat out. But AMD vs Intel is another matter.
 
AMD cause they realized that the world needed 64 bit processor way before intel did hahaha. Intel said they wouldn't make it for another 10 years or something and now they have to catch up.
 
AMD 64 for games and image editing
P4 HT for heavy multitasking and processer heavy tasks (eg encoding)

The downside with the P4 is price, power needed and heat so maintenence can be expensive..
 
It always appeared to me that when it comes to home computers, Intel have become a shell of it's former self, a remnant of an ancient technology whose existance as the best remains only in the back of a public conscience and doesn't pad out in the real world. That's why from-the-shelf PCs still have Intel CPUs: just so they can have the Intel Inside logo which to the untutored stands for the best that computing has to offer.

well said. the amd board selections sucks big time, but you can still find decent ones if you dont want to get too specialised (eg elitegroup etc)

ps: They both suck.

I always do AMD, just stick with decent board manufacturers....

hmmm, well i must say i've always had better experiences with intels over athlons

we had a p2 300 that run for years like the blazes, then upgraded to an athlon (insert inconsequentsial number here) with the new pc, because it was cheaper.

i now have a p4 on my notebook, its a desktop replacement style thing so its not some watered down chip, i believe its pretty much the same as a desktop processor, and have found it to be far more stable.

speedwise the pentium wins but thats completely irrelevant as they're not meant to be compared, top end laptop chip vs mid/high desktop chip, but stability wise the intel wins, of course it could be any other number of reasons why the laptop is more stable than the desktop.
 
well all I know is that I got an intel and my comp is bad

well thats what you get from Celeron really need to upgrade I will probably get an AMD only things need upgrade is CPU (maybe motherboard) and teh gfx card 32 MB isn't great for gaming
 
go for amd, you get more for your money.
i have a amd64 3500+ (usaly under 30° thanks to zalman CNPS7700-cu) and a a8n-sli (nforce4) runs fast as hell and is stable.
how much do you want to spend on it?
is it for a update or a completly new system?
how much do you want to pay?
 
Just quick about Semprons being sucky. I thought so too, but needed to upgrade my folks pc as cheap as possible(board + cpu), got the Sempron 2800+ and so far I have not been disappointed. It's not as good as the XP ones or let alone the 64 bit series. Idea is that they are cheaper, so don't compare it to the number that comes with it, but compare it to the bang/buck ratio, which is certainly not bad. My opinion of course.
 
There are crappy Intel compatible boards just as there is crappy AMD boards. With Intel, stick with Intel motherboard chipsets, and with AMD, stick with Nvidia chipsets.

Although AMD has been plagued in the past with stability issues, it was almost always the motherboard, not the CPU that caused the problems. The NForce chipsets are very nice and stable however, and finally give AMD processors credibility in the business world.
