Any Chance We Could Get App/games Lists Stickied

I don't want a page of pure stickies, of course, but I thought with all the discussions taking place around applications and homebrew/ported games, it would be nice to have a couple of unified lists to help the consumer's know what to expect with the unit.
I figure one for Apps/Utilities, and one for Games (subdivided into Commercial/Homebrew/ports)
Layout could be similar to the emulator one. We could list what is being actively worked on, intended to be worked on, and what is outside of the capabilites of the system. I realize there are a couple of individual posts where game requests have been mentioned, but it would be nice to organize in one place(for example, I had to search high and low to find the games svartalf had committed to porting).

Well that's a little less set in stone than emulators, since emulators will be one of the main uses of the device.
All those open source tools which can run on the pandora and would have a use will probably be ported:
-firefox
-thunderbird
-open office?
-pidgin
-gimp?

i'd think something lighter weight than openoffice would be better personally, abiword + gnumeric work well

I bet that openoffice could probably run unoptimized (it runs on my gf's EEE PC). However, I have a feeling that trimming it down would be a pretty big effort. I think that abiword and gnumeric are probably a better option for getting something out quickly. Perhaps effort would be better spent making those projects better, rather than slimming down the bear that is OOo.

I will probably just use google docs for my stuff. I'm sick of trying to keep track of the same file on multiple machines.

Google Docs: $0

Seeing Adobe Acrobat come out, move all your documents to it because it pwns, then realize you can't access them on your Pandora because it requires Flash: priceless

Some things I won't let money buy. <_<
For everything else, there's Master Card.

;)

I'm using google docs now for a couple things. I rarely use any document focused stuff on my n800, I might a little on the pandora. Also, afaik, google docs is AJAX not flash, it should work really well in firefox (not entierly sure what you were refering to)..

Posts like this make me wish there was some sort of Digg-like Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down rating systems for posts - so I could digg you up. That was awesome.

Quoted, in full, for awesomeness.

Adobe Acrobat - the website - is a flash-based online "office suite". He was saying that people might like the Adobe site better, because it's slick as hell - but it won't work on Pandora.

(because they don't take American Express.... AJAX - it's everywhere you want to be! - sorry, couldn't resist.)

But Google Docs will (assuming Firefox 3 does, as advertised). That was his point.

To the OP: I think this will be pretty well sorted once we get more than two forums about the Pandora. I'm actually looking for a bit of breathing room... :( <_< :)

It was a lot easier to compile the emulators list than it would be to compile a general apps and games list.

There are so many possible apps to port and/or homebrew possibilities, and so many variables involved... You could try keeping track of games/apps/whatever that devs suggested they'd work on - plenty of that on the dev board. Maybe try compiling a list. I guess. But in the long run I'm not sure how useful it might be. With emulation there is a finite limit in terms of targets - there are only so many possible systems/computers/devices to emulate - so it's much easier to do what I did because of that. With everything else... it's limitless! :) But that's a good thing. Can't live on emus alone!

I don't know why you say "probably", since they've already been ported. All of those you listed have ARM packages already:

http://packages.debian.org/sid/iceweasel
http://packages.debian.org/sid/icedove
http://packages.debian.org/sid/openoffice.org
http://packages.debian.org/sid/pidgin
http://packages.debian.org/sid/gimp

This will be weird for me, using remind/wyrd, mutt, and bitlbee/irssi on my laptop, and Thunderbird and Pidgin on my Pandora...

@chad78: thanks for the clarification. I'll stick with my google docs stuff, it works well enough that I typically use that over OOo on my laptop, and it works *ok* on my n800.

by probably I mean "run well"

Will run very well. They all work great on my 300mhz PII and 96mb or ram, which is much weaker than the pandora.

Nobody should really need a list. All it takes is a bit of common sense and some basic reasoning skills to figure out if a particular program could run on the Pandora. To give you some help in helping yourselves, I've created a flowchart which you can use to determine if a program is likely to run on the Pandora. If you must sticky something, sticky this.

Good chart. Not seen gliffy before - does indeed look useful.

I agree that for apps there seems little point as the list could be huge. I kind of like the idea of a games list split commercial/homebrew under devlopment/porting as suggested, stored on google apps.

For those more in the know, would this be a reasonable sized list?

I ROFL'ed myself silly when I read the chart.

Yeah, that's a cool SAAS app there- shame it's a SAAS app. The data you produce resides on their systems- which can be a boon, but it is just liable to be a liability in many ways.
