TV Out cable just arrived by Special Delivery 11:00am!

First tests look good but highlight the video out problems mentioned by GPH in some software.

Basic menu pictures were as full screen as expected and good colour.

Vice GP2X Vic20 was squashed up in the top half of the screen using default settings.

Scaled mode created two Vic20 screens side by side but cleraly displayed in colour.

GP Engine has a screen image half width of the TV screen

Happy to report that the Colecovision on Mess booted up to a nice full screen as did the TI99/4a !

Practically the cable seems to be of good quality but is far too short!!!

Edit : Cable has SVHS plug and two female Phono connectors for sound out.

You will need to buy an SVHS extension cable with a socket on one end and a plug on the other to make any use of this cable for playing games :-(

Running movies on the big screen in a hotel or something should be fine as the 2x and cable can sit next to the TV.

Note - My TV is a 6 year old 28" Toshiba Widescreen CRT.

Overall I'd give it 7/10 it does what it says on the tin (TV Out ) but is no use for games on the big screen unless you want to sit on top of the TV or buy an SVHS extension. Hey ho - off to Maplin we go.

Best regards,
Vic20-Ian

Am I right to say that it doesn't use the headphone socket? That's what I think I've understood, but I'd just like to check. That'll be particularly handy considering my gp2x is one of the very early ones with the wireless headphone socket feature! :p

Cable update :

It does not use the headphone socket.

The lead connects GP2x external connector to an SVHS plug and two (red and white) phono female connectors.

To hook it up to the TV in a playable fashion I just bought the following Maplin items :

L03AJ 2 Phono to 2 Phono 5m £10.39 (male Phono plugs to male phono plugs)

and

L44BA S-Video Extension Lead 5m £7.99 (female SVHS socket to Male SVHS plug)

So £18.38 and £14 something to Craig for the 2x lead to get it hooked up to a point where I can lie on the settee with a bucket of emulation on the big screen :D

It isn't designed to be a cable, it is an adaptor to give the Svideo and audio ports, just like on any console.

The best (and cheapest) cables to get for it would just be normal red/white/yellow video cables. Thats what I use, cost £4.99 for a 4M one.

Also, the emulators will work once they are fixed up, it's because no one had a cable to test them until now.

From GBAX.com

"All you need is the TV adaptor, which gives the GP2X an Svideo socket and L and R audio sockets!

Support for PAL and NTSC, screen adjustment and you can also switch between TV and LCD without turning off the system, just plug it in and connect regular console cables between the GP2X and your TV set."

This information is not quite correct Craig - It is an S Video plug and two phono sockets.

None of the consoles I have have ever owned had an SVHS female to male extension lead included. So which regular console lead are you using then Craig ?

I agree this is an available lead but you would struggle to find it anywhere other than Maplin or a specialist audio video supplier. The only other option might be an adaptor kit to scart lead but this will again take some sourcing. You might find something in Argos but Maplin is the best bet.

the original playstation had a female svideo socket and so did the mk1 3do as well.

Buy a TV-OUT cable and u can use your gp2x on the TV, But unless you spend more money on an additional lead its pointless as you will have to sit behind your tv set.

Don't get me wrong, TV-OUT is a fantastic idea, Its just plain daft to charge for a TV-OUT cable if you still need to buy a lead to get it to work.

look above how the price added up to.........

So £18.38 and £14 something to Craig for the 2x lead to get it hooked up to a point where I can lie on the settee with a bucket of emulation on the big screen

£18.38 and £14 = £32.18

£32.18 !!!!!!!! and thats just to get the TV-OUT to work properly

Wow! thats just way over the top for a cable. Ok the idea as said is good, but there is no way im paying that much for a cable-adapter( which is extra!) . The price for this little machine seems to get more and more, especially after u buy batteries, case etc......

The tv out should of been in with the price of the unit.

I think I'm going to need a gender changer for the video lead, but I have quite an assortment of spare red/white/yellow cables knocking around, and I'd imagine a lot of other people with enough interest in old consoles to want to buy a GP2x will also have them.

Also, the GP2x cable is just an adaptor. People would still find reasons to whine about the length if it was 2 metres long.

The only trouble I had was getting hold of an S-Video female-to-female interconnect, purchased from the last halfway decent audio/video retailer where I live. I paid £3.99, retail store price.

Or you can use a S-Video female-to-female composite video interconnect.

So for me it cost £14.24 + £3.99 = £18.23.

I look at it as a one off cost, it's not like I'm going to have to buy another one anytime soon.

Even if people don't have a dedicated yellow phono cable, they could always use either the red or white cable from a 2 phono cable, assuming they have more than one of course. :)

So what?

That means the PS1 lead would be male. Exactly how are you going to plug this into the GP2x male plug without a female to female adaptor?

You need a female to male SVHS extension as stated above unless you want to sit on the telly.

a longer cable would be nice but this whole concept is quite revolutionary... i really do aplaud GPH on this one. it's not too bad for me cos my tv-in sockets are on the front of tv but if they're round the back you might need that extension.

even with the connections on the front of your tv your still going to have a problem, unless you like to play computer games siting a few inces infront of the tv, or you could just sit on the sofa with the TV on your lap.
