Let's make an email newsletter for all GP2X owners. Why? Let me explain:
Many people visit these and other forums and are quite well informed about the going ons in the GP32 scene. However, it takes some effort and dedication to keep up to date with all the stuff happening. The percentage of GP32 owners checking a scene site weekly or more often is higher than with all other handhelds but I still think it's below 25%. Many people don't have the time or they loose interest after a while or maybe they simply forget it. We don't want those people to miss important emulator releases and especially not commercial game releases. So we spam them with emails. :)

What do we need?
I feel up to the job of supervising the content, collecting it and putting it all together. However I need someone to do the technical side. Setting up an automated subscribing/unsubscribing system etc. Anyone up for this task?

It would be great if distributors could notify all their buyers of the existence of the newsletter and tell them to sign up, that would make it much easier to spread. But we'll see about that when we've got it up and running. ;)

What should be in the newsletter?
I'd say there should be an issue every 2-4 weeks, depending on the amount of news, of course. If important things happen, there can be special issues.

Content:
Commercial Games
-News
-Releases
Homebrew Releases
-Emulators
-Games
-Other
Press
-Links to game reviews
-Links to other articles
Other
-Firmware updates
-Hardware news
-Whatever

Comments? Ideas? Help offerings?

i like the idea alot. I would subscribe to this newsletter for sure.

I like this idea too and I wish you good luck with it. But as I've seen before many fan based newsletters die out sooner or later if there's no official backing and good stream of news from the community and other interesting parts. I would surely be happy to write about anything and everything I do for GP2X.

Very cool idea. I think it woul definately help the scene.

Maybe add:
- Official Firmware, patch updates
- Open2x News (check the news forum :) )

Well, there's already a site RSS newsfeed, but a digest edition with the news proofed, indexed and sorted by category could be useful (and probably the easiest way to do what you're suggesting...)

A Mailing list would be good, so all Diehard GP2X fans who cant stand GP32x (or has been banned XD) can get the most important news on their mail.

I'd be happy to be a journalist for the newspaper/Mailing service/whatcha-ma-call-it ^^

It's a good idea,

i can implement a newsletter system on GP2x.info with
subscribe / unsubscribe, an online admin system where newswriters
can login and submit there news, automated sending etc.
no probs, just say the word...

i can make it so that people can subscribe from different
GP2X sites to one central database.

In this way we will make it a joint effort. I think it's not doable
to gather and write news on your own, there's just to much dev going on.

I will code a newletter-module that is customizable to the site's layout.
and externally loaded into a page with a view pieces of code.

Are there other GP2X site owners interested in this concept?

That would be great! :)

Great stuff, that would surly contribute a lot to help keeping the newsletter alive :)

I would like to translate the newsletter to german because the german scene grows steadily thanks to EDs efforts.

... or you could just use the RSS feeds from gp32x.de, gp2x.de (German) :)

But good idea. Everything that helps the gp2x becoming popular is good :)

Evildragon, think you are right for that one...
news becomes old fast.

Maybe it could be more a monthly magazine (.pdf?)
with indepth interviews, game reviews, tutorials and
some techie things explained.

Forums are great for short messages and to discuss, but sometimes i miss a
bit more indepth info about things.

Especially for the newbies (like me) for whom linux kernels and SDL is
just plain abacadabra.

We need a few dedicated people who are willing to spend a few hours
a month for this.

Set it up something like this.

It's a site dedicated to a newsletter, if you want something like this to be successful, i suggest something similiar. ;)

A magazine would be cool, too, but it would be a completely different project. What I have in mind are collected news from everywhere in one central source being delivered every few weeks so that you don't have to search for them. A little commentary would be possible but I want to krep it pretty neutral. If this works out, we could think about a magazine project with in depth articles, reviews etc.

i have thought about it a while,
we could do the following:

make 1 page with:

* all GP2X rss feeds available
* possibility for visitors to add news,
with short comments.

* possiblity to get this info by e-mail

----------- second -----------------------------------------------

A GP2x Monthly Mag would also be so nice.
I am willing to spend a few hours a month doing the layout and
placing the artikels, it's my dayjob, so that's oke.

We could start out with something simple, like one A4.
Just some interviews (with Anna? or Squidge?) and pictures,
just to get the hang of it.

Who can i write down to participate in this?

Count me in for any artwork that might be needed. I'm also an experienced writer/journalist but actually motivating me into doing any of that these days is more than tricky.
