Well I got my Archos Gamepad in the mail.

I updated the firmware and then rooted it.  Installed some Emulators and started playing.

I LOVE IT !!!

But ............

Yup that d-pad....... Not so good :(

So I took out those 4 buttons and put in an Nes D-pad   :)

The one thing I didn't like about the mod i that the original buttons are cloverleaf shaped. I was going to use a PS2 D-pad as they are similarly shaped. But it wouldn't work without modding the button holes to much. So I went with the Nes D-pad, which I actually like a lot better than the PS2 D-pad anyway.

But that is why the d-pad housing is cloverleaf shaped and not perfectly square like the Nes D-pad.

I wonder if the back cover could be altered so a larger battery can be swapped in? Or if a larger battery could be put in as is.

Also, if you did manage to put a bigger battery in, would the system automatically manage the extra capacity - for charging etc?

Ie Would you also need to then change some firmware settings to manage the extra capacity battery, or would the system do it automatically?

Edit: found this mod which adds a 10,000 mah battery pack to a different archos tablet, hopefully it can also work (my guess) with the Archos gamepad. Would bump battery life to 17 + hours ~ of solid gaming

It would be very hard without some serious modification.  I looked into it.

I mean it can be done. Just use the existing pcb that is connected to the existing battery and swap in a larger mAh battery.

The problem is , no room.  That case is thin.  The battery can be a tad longer and quite a bit wider but NO thicker.  And all larger capacity Lithium Polymer are much thicker. The existing battery is less than 4.5 mm thick and almost all the larger capacity that will fit are 6.5mm-9mm thick.

But I'm still trying   :)

Well it was easier than I thought if you have a proper sized battery :)

It took a whole 2 posts before you did a 180. That's a record ;) . Well done, good mod.

It's a better looking mod than the 10,000mah USB battery box mod I linked :)

Well I really didn't think it would fit.  But I removed the other battery and tried the new one. It closed up fine with no unnecessary pressure, so I said "Let's give it a go"   :)
