I managed to get the speakers to work pretty fast, but no matter what I do, there is no mic input.
It would be greatly appreciated if anybody could help out in finding the problem.

Operating System: Linux Mint 19.3 - 64bit
Kernel Version: 5.3.0-51-generic
BlueZ Version: 5.52
Audio environment: Pulse Audio
BluTooth Hardware: Plugable USB Bluetooth Adapter
BlueTooth Software: Blueman
Headset: OneOdio Bluetooth Headset with microphone

What I have tried already:
- Switching Between HSP/HFP and A2DP Sink
- Unmuting everything in "alsamixer"
- Updating BlueZ to v5.52

I have found that after switching into HSP/HFP mode, many applications will need to be restarted before they recognize the presence of the mic. This includes electron apps like Slack or Teams as well as Firefox.

@Klumpen Maybe the volume of the mic is zero?

First go to
pavucontrol (type this into the xterm it is also a binary you can run)
Then in the top choose "Input Devices" (1), from there, on the bottom select show:"All Input Devices" (2). Find your device, you might need to select a port. Adjust the dB/Volume.
Now check the vu meters included in pavucontrol (4)
And check (3) muted

It's fixed, HSP/HFP didn't really work regardless whether I chose it or not.
The fix was the second one here:

The mic signal quality is ass though, from what I have read that's normal due to BT standards, so although it's nice to be able to walk around the apartment while in voice chat, the loss of audio quality is a massive drawback.
