"light" version of ubuntu - possible?

You might want to start with Bodhi Linux.

http://bodhilinux.com/

Comes with:

Enlightenment Desktop.

Web Browser.

CLI.

Text Editor.

err. And that's it.

Different profiles for different devices and access to all of the Ubuntu and Bodhi compiled repos mean that you get to install exactly what you want.

btw: Not involved with this project, but I do use it on my day to day old Dell. Runs extremely well.

I think you can achieve that by following Debian on SD guide, replacing Debian with Ubuntu, you just install base system and then any WM/DE you like, and that's it. It even works for Gentoo, so there should be no major problems there.

On the other hand, if you want things like bluetooth, shares and automounting work smooth you'll have to install quite a lot of Gnome packages there.

Ubuntu ARM repos might be a mess, though.
