I just found a really awesome blog post from Soren Johnson, Civilization 4's lead developer, about game design and user experience.

I love the Sid Meier quote at the beginning of the article: "A good game is a series of interesting choices".

A must read for anyone looking to develop homebrew. :)
 
Very interesting. He makes a lot of good points. I especially like "double or halve" - it's a great piece of advice. Don't make little changes to perfect things, make drastic changes and see if the output is tangibly better or worse. Later you can make small improvements to balance out the game.
