USB Modem

Does anyone else have to reboot every time they need to use a usb 3g modem? Also, if I have the modem in on boot up, connect, disconnect and then pull the modem out and put it back in again, it's not recognised when I put it back in until a reboot.

I've read that usb 1.1 devices stop the usb port from working until a reboot, but this device is usb 2.0. My pocket's too small for carrying the modem inside the Pandora the whole time ;)

Apologies if someone has already written about it but I couldn't find anything other than for set up of a usb modem.

One last question. Does this happen with a usb wifi adapter as well?

not here, pal, tried today earlier, disconnected my nokia C6 and a Linksys AE1000 a few times, no need to reboot, or, at most, once in a while, having to kill NetworkManager and run it again

hmmmm, I'll try killing NetworkManager. Guess I look in the script in /etc..... to work out how to stop it?

also try "sudo lsusb" to see if it is recognizing that a USB device is inserted and it's just not starting the network, or if it really is not seeing the device at all.

Thanks Alerino and WizardStan,

I've haven't had a chance to test out yet but will let you know.

Thanks Alerino and WizardStan,

I've haven't had a chance to test out yet but will let you know.

I've done some tests. The usb port is definitely giving the modem power as the modem light comes on every time I connect it. Usually lsusb doesn't recognise the modem. Killing network management doesn't, of itself, help. On one occasion I managed to get the usb modem working without a reboot, but I don't know what I did :(

Here is some dmesg output from me getting it working, then disconnecting it (whilst connected to the network) and then trying to connect it again:

btw the modem has a micro sd slot.

did you see this thread? it has a few tweaks about "turning on/off the usb device", something that i haven't needed with my huawei e220 (just installed modemmanager from the repo and voilá), maybe you need to do something to make it appear in lsusb) or maybe driver/power issues, those lines are strange to me:

[ 3990.145568] usb 1-2: config 1 has an invalid descriptor of length 0, skipping remainder of the config

[ 3990.154968] usb 1-2: config 1 interface 3 altsetting 0 has an invalid endpoint with address 0x0, skipping

[ 3990.164611] usb 1-2: config 1 interface 3 altsetting 0 has 2 endpoint descriptors, different from the interface descriptor's value: 3

I had read that guide but didn't use it because my usb modem already worked without that whole process. I'll have another look and see if there's anything of assistance.

Now I'm getting something even more strange. When I switch to wifi (with the usb modem unplugged) all I get is a reference in neworkmanager is the usb modem!! Wifi stopped working. Then I plug in the USB modem but trying to connect to the network is futile.

I realise there are a lot of challenges with the Pandora, but the networking issues are making it a less productive device and more a gaming device (ymmv). The build in wifi is unreliable with continued drop outs, I bought a usb wifi stick with the same chipset as the one for which a driver pnd has been posted but it doesn't work. 3G doesn't work reliability.

I am frustrated and a bit stumped as to what to do.

I've used 2 mifi-type modems with Pandora's built in wifi and every few minutes I get the "wifi requires authentication" message box with the SSID and password text fields.

This interrupts whatever internet stuff I'm going and is making internet stuff all but impossible.

Would this be a Pandora wifi dropout or something to do with the modem? Note again, I've used 2 different modems!

Would any further information help?

You're great support Alerino. I decided to ditch the push-ups and get the lipo instead :D . I bought a linksys AE1000 and haven't looked back.
