Modem is undecided yet, it is speculated that it will be a PLS-8-E ([http://www.sectron.eu/products/1-gemalto-m2m/3-industrial-plus/1781-cinterion-r-pls8-e-by-gemalto-m2m-.html],[http://www.gemalto.com/brochures-site/download-site/Documents/M2M_PLS8_datasheet.pdf Features], [http://www.seapraha.cz/download/pls8-e_hd_v01000a_tcm216-155302.pdf Datasheet])

Another variable is price. A 3g modem is cheaper than a 4g one. But they are pin-compatible, which means a decision can be made based on demand. It is also possible to upgrade to 4G by moving to those in production at a later stage.

The Modem will be an PLS8-E(EU Versions) ([1],Features for both Versions, Datasheet) or PLS8-US(US Versions). It provides GSM, LTE and GPS. There's an CPU-GPIO controlled Hardware Switch(like an relay) to disconnect the whole Modem from Power so we don't have to rely on the Closed-Source Modem Firmware.

GSM/LTE is most prevalent, and would mean only one chip in all Pyras. For reference these are the networks and frequencies used in Europe and The US Another variable is price. A 3g modem is cheaper than a 4g one. But they are pin-compatible, which means a decision can be made based on demand. It is also possible to upgrade to 4G by moving to those in production at a later stage.

Carrier Compatibility

Main article: Carrier Compatibility

US

Look for a GSM network, like Tmobile or AT&T. (Verizon and Sprint use CDMA networks, which are incompatible with the Pyra modem.)

US MVNOs

There are smaller companies which use the Tmobile and AT&T networks (i.e. Virtual operators), but you'll have to look through for the GSM carriers with a BYOD policy.

Some that may allow use of a Pyra (none yet confirmed) include:

  • Cricket Wireless
  • Ting
  • MetroPCS
  • Simple Mobile

Australia

Australia requires the European Pyra Modem. See this Whirlpool Forum post for more details.

Europe

Pretty much everybody???
