OKay, I worked far too much on this engine the last few days :p

It is now pretty capable at a coulpe of other game types, so can now do 3 main game types. Due to a recent turn of events, I'm going to be more open about it..

Its mostly good at:

1) Action puzzler top down games like Gauntlet, Time Bandits, Zelda, etc
2) Asteroids style (rotate/thrust)
3) Platformers (mario, etc. Run left/rigt, jump, gravity and friction)

Engine runs on GP32, Windows, Palm OS/Zodiac, Unix/Linux, Mac OSX.. maybe eventually Pocket PC and Symbian, who knows? Free for most platforms, including GP32 and Windows, so you can dev up your games for free and play 'em on gp32 or share them with others, etc.

If you want to work on artwork or make your own games or work wqith people on levels, just sign up to the mailing list. You can find it all here:

Spread the word ..

yep; you can get Zotwin from the website right now and start muckign with your own games/levels right away.

The engine for other platforms (like GP32, OSX, etc) will be along in a bit, just need to tighten them up a touch.

Will a user be able to import his/her own artwork?
You can use whatever art you want; ie: Right now, the included artwork is minimal and bland (I suck at it ;); I hope to build up a pool.. peopel dropping in their artwork etc, and others using it if they want.. we coudl end up with peopel with their own priaste little games, and other people donating art or configs for peopel to use.. I'm hoping we end up with a little community of resources and games .. could be very interesting!

Jeff,

have you added the gravity/wind resistance effects yet?
Yep..

ie: It can do platform games now ;)

ie: Player moves with velocity (he has a directiuon of motion, which breaks up into velocity x and y)

You can specify gravity-x and gravity-y which are constant push in each direction component, and you can specify a friction-x and friction-y, which are like gravity but only reduce you to zero in each component.

So the default config demo sets a gravity-y that pushes player down. You coudl easily set a gravity-x that pushes player to the left, say.. like wind.

Friction is the rate of deceleration essentially.. approaches zero. So set a small or large one to slow player down.

ITs in the release notes for zotwin 018 in the zot-maker list, and I'll be updaitng the zotconf webpage soon so its documented.

The demo level is set to platform style.. jump, left/right, slide.

Hmm, you are like a bridge between nations Skeezix, only between gaming communities this time :)
Wish your project great luck, looks like even people who cannot code (yet) can develop games for the GP32 and thats good news.
Btw, does it use floating point or fixed point math?

It closes really quickly (as soon as I open it) and the text file in the DIR says something about a SDL Parachute being demployed.

Erm....a little help?
So you double click on it, it comes up and closes right away?

Can you email me the zotlog.txt from the Zot directory? (it may show some interestign stuff, or not)

I've run it on a few dozen machiens no problem, but you never know.. SDL might be choking on your machine for some reason, or something. Join the mailing list and let me know, and maybe I c an pop out a couple versions to test it..

Never had a crash on anything but Windows. Doh :)

Internally most of it is fixed point for speed; its not the most accurate, but we're not doing a 3d engine here either, so its okay. ie: Try it out.. in platformer mode (the defauilt for zot 018) it runs nice and smooth; even smoon in asteroids rotation mode. In gauntlet style top down, it couldnt' care less about angles anyway :)

Hmm, nice Game Maker, but somehow i'm scared, if it is too easy we would be flooded by lame Mario-Clones, like it was with the Rm2k.

But nevertheless a nice tool ^^

I'm sure the community will be able to tell what's a usefull application of the software and whats just a attempt a squandering resources for attention. There's a differance between easy an intuitive, hopefully this is more accessible to people with skill in design than it is to a 8 year old just wanting to mak Mario games with fart jokes.

hmmm, seems my mario clone idea isnt liked
comeon guys, 6 golden coins rocked! and with this, i believe I could make it after we finish GPFinalWar and I get some free time

In theory, you could make a Double Dragon/Final Fight/Streets of Rage game with this, correct?
It isn't really designed to be a fighter, but its remotely possible.. it'd likely be slow since those need lots of hardware assistance.. (ie: IF each sprite is 20% of the screen, then a couple sprites takes up 40% of screen, so you end up rendering probaly 50% of the screen twice.. the underneath, plus the sprites... so you lose 50% of your framerate unless you're careful.)

You're welcome to take a stab at it, and bug me for mods to make it work.. but its not designed to be a fighter.

Why not use Beats of Rage for that? :)
