I got some info about Gamepark releasing a new portable. I don't know much about this, and completely considering it as a rumor. But here's what i've heard for various sources...

ok it's a Black Unit and it will come Preloaded with WinCE and have a 266 ARM CPU 32 Megs Ram Big Screen Backlite Like PDA...and have wireless Internet Access

I can only assume it's bullshit cause when I asked this one person where he got the information, he responded:

can;t tell I promisted not to tell

Anyone else hear anything like this?

VIA's new portable is much better than that

a very long time ago I heard that Gamepark was making something like a GP32 SP (like the GBA SP) with 32M RAM and 266MHz....and a backlit....
a foto is available somewhere...
I have on my HDD if someone wants it....just tell me...

see you

Yeah I remember that, I can only assume that project died... I don't think that Gamepark would shoot that low if they were to make a new handheld or even remake one.

could it be the cancelled GPI?!

because...

it has no sense to release a new substitute for GP32 now when the BLU is near to start in Europe

and maybe it's too early for a small company like GamePark to get involved in release/develop a new handheld.... don't you think?!

Bye! :D

The SP like thing that i remember was the GPI, a mobile phone gaming hybrid with internet access.

I vaguely recall a site that had a name involving penny (not pennyarcade.com) i've also got the vague notion that it may have been one of the early prototypes along with that spiky green one...

The link to the gpi stuff at Insert Credit is here and an old interview is here.

Ahhhh. What could have been. ;)

Woah lots of stuff in there!

The basic SDK has graphics, sound, key input, mike, system, memory management, extra communication and storage management libraries. The advanced SDK has all of these plus 3D graphic library, protocol stack, an OS kernel and undisclosed 'other features'

3D graphic library? Does that mean 3D game making?

The GPI operates with a Linux OS: Kernel 2.4

Well we are gonna get Linux soon anyways! With a BLU it should kick ass! Is anybody trying to make some ethernet cable for the GP32 yet?

[irony]i can't beleive that they didn't release this with the success the lastest handheld/phone has[/irony]

Iirc, the GPi was a 200MHz machine, so if your source is claiming a 266MHz one, then that implies potentially a different system. However, as you say, its not like he's all that reliable in terms of where his info comes from. Though if it *is* true, then it'd be a lovely little thing.

Pity they seem to have used 32Mb instead of 64; 32 is a lot, but 64 prolly wouldn't raise the price that much, lower the power consumption too greatly, and would allow more fiddling about with things like Neo Geo emulation, perhaps. Or perhaps not.

Let us see what the future brings, I say.

EDIT: Actually, I can't find the specs for the GPi anywhere, so maybe I'm wrong. No idea...

Sounds good, but what about backwards compatibility? With backwards compatibility, we could have full speed SNES (or whatever OpenSnes9x @ 266MhZ is :D) instantly :p

Could well be someone getting a little confused with CPU speeds... a common cpu used in PDA's, and a relative of the ARM9, is the StrongARM, and the 206Mhz part is a very common one (its not too hard to go from saying 206MHz, to 266MHz - in fact I think theres even a 266MHz SA part now.). The two parts are probably pin compatible, so it could well be possible that something initially announced as a 200(206?) MHz model, may finally see light of day as a 266 (or higher!... the ARM code-compatible XScale cpu runs *hundreds* of MHz faster) version.

Probably doubtful that we'll see another piece of hardware from Gamepark in the short to medium term though.
