A Nice Thread All About The Psp

hey bast, have you tried playing a vid clip that was encoded by a goood h.264 encoder like the one in nero recode 2.2?
i heard the app used in the engadget review is pure crap and doesn't generate true avc encoded clips or whatever, which explains the crappier than xvid compression ratio they got. it would be great if you can play the files generated from recode 2.2 since i hear you can get a 2 hour movie at higher than dvd resolution with the best settings to fit at around 800mb. psp resolution clips should take quite a bit less space.

yeah, i can't wait to test out the latest nero recode, but it'll have to wait till i upgrade my ancient pc ;)

The app they use is brilliant, they got it all wrong in that review. You can easily get a movie (1:30) down to around 200-250mb with excellent quality. I've got Team America on there right now, coming in at around 210mb I think it was. Perfectly nice quality.

I haven't tried putting any movies on it yet... as I only have the 32mb memory stick that came with the value pack. I was going to pick up a 512 but am waiting to see how much the 1024 ones might go for first.

I'm dying to see how it looks though.

For the first time in the PSP's short history, it has the lead in weekly hardware sales at 31 percent market share (In Japan). According to our sources, it has risen above the Nintendo DS's 25 percent, marking this as a milestone in the PSP's life.

While the PSP still lags behind in overall sales due to the hardware shortage, production is on the verge to increase. Creating a larger supply of PSP's mean the gap between sales will slowly close in due to the surge of demand for the product.

However, sales in terms of software for the PSP do not look quite as stunning. There were actually only two games on the Top 10 list in Japan. Hot Shots Golf Portable ranked in at number eight and Dynasty Warriors at number ten.

With the rush of the DS finally slowing down and the demand for the PSP still remaining high, there could be a long period that the PSP will stay in the green. We'll keep you informed when later charts are available.

wow... nobody saw THAT coming :p :D

odd about them placing only Golf and Dynasty Warriors (BLEH!) on the top sales lists though... I thought it was like EVERY PSP sold was purchased with a copy of Ridge Racers?

yeah, that's what i thought too.
yeah, dynasty warriors is so BLEH! every single one is the same.

hmm where do I put the stuff.. Mp3, pics, videos. etc?

Just found out... MP_ROOT/100MNV01 :p

Btw. Just ordered a Sandisk Pro Duo 1 GB, can't wait.

Does 2 GB Pro Duo's exist now?

Bastard :p I want a 1gb!!!! I should have waited and orderd... what'd you pay? I just got a 512 San Disk but damn it actually only has like 468MB... supposedly this is typical? Well why call it a 512 then???

Anybody have any idea whether PSP will be able to emulate Gp32?

(i'm not asking is this legal, just is it possible?)...

Can someone please list what apps can make mp4's that are compatible with the PSP? I'm currently using 3gp (the app used by endgadget) which seems pretty middle of the road... it can do good quality but only on the higher settings making really large files. I was putting some anime on there, and the lowest setting I found that looked nice to me with very little pixelation was 600kbps, 15fps... this brought a 24 minute video to about 120MB... giving me at most 1.5 hours of space if I were to try to put a full movie on there. Seems quite a few people think 3gp is crap though no one has bothered to name me anything that's better??

I'm tempted to buy the Sony app for $10 but have heard it doesn't exactly try to keep the files small either.

Anyways... if anyone can recommend any other apps that work decently please do...

Man I really wish I'd just held off and bought a 1GB card :(

Bast, stick with 3GP, there are some ini files floating about if you want more options. But I find that rotating between QB4, QB7 and QB10 provides the best for me.

The Sony program is crap. Not worth it.

Those Sandisk 'gamer' cards were meant to be out at the end of January? Any news on them. I think I'll be picking up a 1gb version from them.

Actually I've already done my own editing of the ini file that comes with the program, just trying different bit rates for the video... but I'm curious, where would I get other .ini's? I'm looking for other combinations of sound bitrates and maybe other framerates other than 15 and 30. Seems I can only really alter just the bitrate of the video.

Just got back from Game - they claim the release date for PSP had been put back to June in the UK & US!! <groan> due to the problems that were experienced in Japan....

However the DS is due out on March 11 - costing £99.99...

Also claim that PSP will cost £200-250!!! Double <groan>...

theres no way it could be that expensive!

the japanese cost: 20,790 yen (including tax)

directly translated to dollars thats: 200 dollars

directly to pounds the japanese price is: 106 pounds

even if you add VAT to the already taxed japanese price its a nice round figure of £125, would seem about acceptable. if the price is that high i'll defintely be looking at importing from the US, its insanity otherwise!

Absol<bloody>lutely. There is no way I'd pay that much for a FULL console let alone a handheld!

where are these rumors coming from? Every major game and toy store around here still say they are on track for a mid-late march release. There may be some truth to the price rumor though.

Another rumor branching out from gamestore speculation and that tentative english manual that was nabbed off the FCC website, is that the US may ONLY get Value Packs. It's well known that system launches in the US, since way back when the NES was around... never really have multiple choices of 'packs' or configurations. Most people had speculated that the US would only get the equivalent of the Japanese Standard Pack, which is just the system, battery and charger. This made the most sense. However the tentative US manual clearly lists all the items available in the Japanese Value Pack as being included, as well as including a special cloth for cleaning the screen.

So, it is very possible that there will ONLY be a Value Pack available for the US launch... if so the price will of course, be similiar to the Japanese Value pack, about $250. I'd definately bet money, one way or the other, that there will only be one way to buy the PSP when it comes out in the US... I'd still bet on it just being the 'standard pack' since this should keep it under the magic $200 mark and close to the DS... however the english manual is intriguing evidence to suggest the contrary.

I got this "straigh from the horses mouth" at the Game(tm) store across the road, where they are taking Pre-Orders.

Although this may be just a gimmick to boost the sales of DSs....

my local game has completely ditched all its preoder PSP posters and replaced them with DS ones, even in the PS2 section

gamestation however remain as objective as ever
