Search Engine Submissions

I think icluding this to your site is a good start.

Code:
<META name="description" content="this site is about.....">

<META name="keywords" content="pc,mac,gp32,gba,stuff,morestuff">

But I don't think that this is SO helpful.

This is a good question. I'm wondering about his too!

A good knowledge of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) can help. Here's a few tips for starters:

1. Keywords. These are the words or phrases with which you want visitors to find your site through the search engines. So, for example, if you had a photography site called 'Andy's photos' selling cameras & accessories you won't want to be targeting 'Andy's photos' because nobody would search for those terms unless they already knew of your website. The phrase 'photography equipment' or 'camera accessories' might be better choices. But be careful - the more popular your keywords the more difficult it is to get a high ranking!

2. Try to use your keywords in the URL, the META tags, H1 tags and in paragraphs. Don't spam your keywords but do use them where you can.

3. Get links. Every incoming link helps increase your PR (pagerank) which in turn will get you more visitors. A high PR doesn't garuntee visitors but it does help. And text links are more useful than banners or images, especially if they contain your keywords in the link itself.

4. Get listed on Dmoz.org. It can be difficult but its well worth it. Google likes Dmoz sites.

5. Content! This is the most important thing a site needs. Google and other search engines like to see lots of regularly updated, relevant content. If you have good content then you're more likely to get links, visitors and a high PR.

I wouldn't worry too much about SEO unless you're running a business that NEEDS the no.1 Google listing. Knowing the basics is enough for most. Anyway, hope this helps!
