I've tried a few videos with RealMagic codec (http://www.sigmadesigns.com/products/RMP4_download.htm) and it seems to work very well with GPCinema2 - well worth a try (just make sure to select "DIVX" and not "RMP4" as the AVI Fourcc code)
With Variable bitrate (Quality) and Quality of 20, I can get better than 1Mb/min at 15fps.

what is the quality / file size with such codec? what are the advantages/defaults ?
by the way it's really great to know it can accept others codec :)

does not work for me, i just see "big pixel...", can you tell me exactly the setting you are using ? (there are rpm4 encoding tools, but is it useful since we use dvx in avi fourcc, for the quantization tool, what do you have....?)
thanks in advance....

"big pixels" here too but interesting. :)

both of those are worse quality settings than I have in Divx, why dont yall raise the settings yall use for quality and do a rematch, cause those suck compared to how I encode

The following are the settings I used for a 55min video (52.7Mb) with MP3 22050Hz @ 32kbps, using RealMagic codec v1.1 for Windows 98SE/Me :-
General encoding parameters:-
Rate Control - Variable bitrate(Quality)
Quality - 20
RMP4 encoding tools - all unchecked
Avi FourCC - DIVX
Advanced encoding parameters :-
Minimum quantizer - 3
Maximum quantizer - 12
Quantization tools - H.263
Maximum keyframe interval - 300

Hope this helps.

well, I aborted a dub of the second part of Black Hawk Down ( its 668 megs, about 70 minutes long, I aborted with the expected file size of 136 megs, it was still going down to be fair tho
I got a 3 and a half minute clip , good enough quality, with lower audio settings than you, I dont need them a 4kbps 3kbps is good enough ( 24 x 22 ) at 6.7 megs
for the resize filter, I had 320x160, I had interlaced and percise bi-cubic A=.75
Ill try something else and let it go all the way and see about it

By the way, what do you do for frame rate?
I used 20 Frames-per-second

Here, this diserves its own post

OCTAVIOUS'S REVIEW OF THIS CODEC ( took forever, so be greatful! )

Ok, did my full movie test, well its not a movie, its one of the Red vs Blue movies, I am converting them all to be GP32 friendly

settings
General encoding parameters:-
Rate Control - Variable bitrate(Quality)
Quality - 20
RMP4 encoding tools - all unchecked
Avi FourCC - DIVX
Advanced encoding parameters :-
Minimum quantizer - 3
Maximum quantizer - 12
Quantization tools - H.263
Maximum keyframe interval - 300
Audio , MPG3 thingy , 24x22 mono
20 frames per second
320x240 resize percise bicubic , interlaced

length, 3 minutes 38.9 seconds
size 2.24 megs
that said, the quality blew, majorly, even compared to my last thing, the Black hawk down part , interesting

well, I will try again
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

General encoding parameters:-
Rate Control - Variable bitrate(Quality)
Quality - 50
RMP4 encoding tools - all unchecked
Avi FourCC - DIVX
Advanced encoding parameters :-
Minimum quantizer - 3
Maximum quantizer - 12
Quantization tools - H.263
Maximum keyframe interval - 300
Audio , MPG3 thingy , 24x22 mono
20 frames per second
320x240 resize percise bilinear

better , strangley tho, file size is 2.14 megs, smaller
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

General encoding parameters:-
Rate Control - Variable bitrate(Quality)
Quality - 75
RMP4 encoding tools - all unchecked
Avi FourCC - DIVX
Advanced encoding parameters :-
Minimum quantizer - 3
Maximum quantizer - 12
Quantization tools - H.263
Maximum keyframe interval - 300
Audio , MPG3 thingy , 24x22 mono
20 frames per second
320x240 resize percise bilinear

nice, but now 4.08 megs
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

General encoding parameters:-
Rate Control - Variable bitrate(Quality)
Quality - 60
RMP4 encoding tools - all unchecked
Avi FourCC - DIVX
Advanced encoding parameters :-
Minimum quantizer - 3
Maximum quantizer - 12
Quantization tools - H.263
Maximum keyframe interval - 300
Audio , MPG3 thingy , 24x22 mono
20 frames per second
320x240 resize percise bilinear

well, I got 2.52 megs and not bad, actually looks as good as 75
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

well, one more test on this Red vs Blue episode, yall better apreciate all this typing....

General encoding parameters:-
Rate Control - Variable bitrate(Quality)
Quality - 65
RMP4 encoding tools - all unchecked
Avi FourCC - DIVX
Advanced encoding parameters :-
Minimum quantizer - 3
Maximum quantizer - 12
Quantization tools - H.263
Maximum keyframe interval - 300
Audio , MPG3 thingy , 24x22 mono
20 frames per second
320x240 resize percise bilinear

size 2.52 megs again! better quality, same size, looks little crisper
well for a 3:38 film that is 2.52 megs, I think Ill stay with this setting
there seems to be something that makes size go up crazy in 75 vs 65 mode
well, off to test on real hardware!

100 mhz = not to far from full speed by how I encoded, but stuttery, impressive!
120 mhz = HOLY SHIT , I am almost positive that this is full speed!!
133 mhz = gaurnteed full speed
more mhz = same as 133
well, picture quality is great, I mean REALLY GREAT, and I have a non lit, has no problems with fastforwarding and rewinding
so, use those settings u selfish bastards if you want good quality and under a meg a minute
sounds nice too

well, an hour of testing for yalls, so be greatful!!
I like this new codec!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
well, just tried a 71 minute movie, got over 200 megs..... must be something uphere....
I used above settings, but with out changing Frames ( left it at 23.93 )
well, I will try again at 20 frames....
maybe this is only good for smaller movies, which is still fine!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
well, did the good old Red vs Blue movie again, but left it at 30 frames, size jumped to 3.01 megs, just under a meg a minute
well, with 30 frames , it had to be run at ...... 150!!! 30 frames, betcha didnt think that was possabile , did ya?
well, ran fine at 150 and 166
I cant try 178 , as my GP doesnt go that high.. yet, when it goes that high, it goes slower
but, for small movies at 30 frames, good quality, and not bad audio, this cant be beat by my books
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
well, I have come to the conclusion that this is the best set of ... stuffs... that can get you good movies under a meg a minute at full speed at 120-133mhz

General encoding parameters:-
Rate Control - Variable bitrate(Quality)
Quality - 65
RMP4 encoding tools - all unchecked
Avi FourCC - DIVX
Advanced encoding parameters :-
Minimum quantizer - 3
Maximum quantizer - 12
Quantization tools - H.263
Maximum keyframe interval - 300
Audio , MPG3 thingy , 24x22 mono
20 frames per second
320x240 resize percise bilinear

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and this is best for smooth video, barely under a meg a minute, but use for short movies only , runs fine at 150-166...

General encoding parameters:-
Rate Control - Variable bitrate(Quality)
Quality - 65
RMP4 encoding tools - all unchecked
Avi FourCC - DIVX
Advanced encoding parameters :-
Minimum quantizer - 3
Maximum quantizer - 12
Quantization tools - H.263
Maximum keyframe interval - 300
Audio , MPG3 thingy , 24x22 mono
frames stay where they are at, as long as its not above 30
320x240 resize percise bilinear
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
well folks, there ya have it, for now, I might add on more later, but for the moment, I am going to call myself the encoding master, cause I didnt think I could avtually encode the same movie 23 times...
Thank you Reeced for showing me this new codec

My pleasure Octavious - and thank you for putting so much work into exploring the codec.
I will certainly give your recommended settings a try.

I am trying to find right now a rough estimate of a point where under 1 meg a minute turns to over a meg a minute , then into over 2 megs a minute
hopefully, this codec will atleast allow us for perfect TV shows or cartoons

but I dont think it will work yet with longer films, but if it does TV shows perfectly, then I am fine with that

right now I am dubbing a 345 meg 33 minute high quality file , basicly the same as a TV show episode, actually longer , Ill post results
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
seems that these settings have differant outcomes based on something in the host movie....
that above file is to big , Ill keep looking into it
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
well, from what I keep seeing, this codec appears to only benefit in 15 minutes or less
1/2 hour air time tv shows and the such should be fine
but for longer files, I am getting double the size as per if I used Divx
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
well, the first episode of Red vs Blue was 7 megs, 3.8 megs compressed the way I used to do it, 1.5 megs this way
atleast I know its good for small vids

~Octavious

sort of adding this as a bump
also, I might have found settings to use this real magic to convert a 23 minute movie into just over, at , or even under a meg a minute
23 minutes is the longest movie that has encoded and been under 2.5 megs a minute ( due to this codec's problem with long movies )
just thought Id let people know I am still trying to use this at longer movies
projected outcome right now is for a 26.3 meg file for a 23 or so minute movie

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ok, so I tried a differant setting and here's what I got
Total file length : 22:32
Total File Size : 26.4 megs

Framerate 19
Bitrate ( variable - size ) 132
Audio 24x22 mono MPGlayer3
and other settings listed

well, that makes this sort of record setting
longest file thats under 2-4 megs a minute on this codec
well, I just might be able to solve the no long video problems
next, I will check with full 23.398 frames ( source ) and check file size

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, same settings, now has origional Framerate ( 23.sumtin ) size is 28.2
will keep trying, also, had to boost volume from 100 to 132% because I can hear it , but only in a silent room
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
well, tried the above clip again, but with a constant bitrate rather than a variable, and it was still 132 bit
guess what, once again we see the oddness of the codec, constant bitrate was 8.1 KB smaller than variable that bases guesses on size
funny, even though 8.1 KB means little, its still funny that this occured
plays fine at 150-166 with full ( 23.xx frames ) frames and is not bad to view
Really nice actually, so I will try at 120 and check out the quality ( 12KB per second smaller should be nice size )
once I find a nice constant bitrate to encode at, I will do a RealmagicMP4 vs DivX battle
DUN DUN DUN!!!
well see who is best rated for quality and size and framerate at good compression levels
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
well, at 120 bit, the file size is 28.7 , barely smaller than the 132 bit, and looks a little worse
Ill try 100, and if thats not to good looking , R vs D at 132 will take place
23 frames on both so we can see hoe GPcinema handles Divx 4.12 at 23+ frames
will test on clock speeds 150 and 166
I wont test however, If it turns out to be larger, because we are going for the goal of under 1 meg a minute
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drum roll please....... ( drum drum drum drum drum drum )
the results are in folks...
its what you have all been waiting for...
Realmagic MP4 codec VS. DivX 4.12 codec showdown is done
results

RealMP4 Divx 4.12
Framerate 23.xx 23.xx
Runs fine at 150 mhz USUALLY NO
Runs fine at 166 mhz YES NO
Film length 22.3 min 22.3 min
Bitrate 132 bit set 132 bit set
Audio 24x22 MPLyr3 mono 24x22 MPLyr3 mono
Total Size 28.5 meg 32.1 meg

well folks, there we have it
this is obviously the better codec for the GP32 , now we need to start the task of optimizing what we have , but , as you can here , Divx 4.12 encoding will soon be a thing of the past
Get ready to say hello to better videos

Thanks for the work you've done.

I encoded a 22minute Garth Marenghi epsiode with Xvid and it weighed in at 40mb now the same episode which is much better quality is 17mb! (And at 25fps!)

Just need to wait for my gp32 to arrive <_<

Hope it works etc

I used the same settings that you outlined.
But the Tv shows I encoded were low quality so I think thats how I was getting less than a Mb per second.
I tried the settings on Shaun of the Dead and got 129Mb for 1hr 35m. (But there is 5 minutes of credits at the end I could cut out)
Quality is pretty good.

Also encoded some Pete and Pete episodes with mixed results.
They are all 24 minutes long but the file sizes are 26,26,30,41MB
