ok after playing around with my friends ipod I now want one cause I'm addicted to the ease of use and the click/touchwheel!!

anyway, as I'm poor I've been looking into probably buying a used 10 or 15 gb 3rd gen iPod..

I've been looking at ebay but I also want to know if anyone knows of any stores or online shops in the US that I can buy a used or refurbished one from..

also I have a question about the piracy protection or whatever it is

I've heard something about iPods having somesort of protection system on it that makes it so you can't transfer songs on multiple computers.. does this mean that it won't work if I try to use it on my computer since its been used on someone else's computer already?

thanks for any help!

don't get an iPod, despite the hype they're pretty shit. Not only do they have built in DRM but you also can't use 'em to record and the remote is really shit. Look into a pre-owned iRiver mp3 player, iRiver is superior to the iPod in every way (its multi codec to so it can play oggs and some other formats too)

i could care less about recording or the remote and I can get one used for dirt cheap  . I just want to make sure i can still transfer/delete songs on it because of this piracy thing.

absolutely anything to do with education. Just go on apple.com , then the apple store, then on the right somewheres theres a link to the education store.

if you buy a 2nd hand one, just format it before use from the pc software, or leave it on and the pc software will probably delete the songs anyway once it finds they are not on your pc.

however, unless your intending on using the ipod in a car, I'd go for an alternative. I quite like the sony portable mp3 player, just a pity there's no remote.

the older generation ipod batteries are known for their shitness, a second hand one will be even worse.

the sony HD-NW* are very nice players, if you've ever had a sony MD or CD player you'll know what to expect.

ipods are usually solid buys, but perhaps you should look into alternatives. The new dell dj's are decent, though I would reccommend either the karma as spray suggested or a zen touch, which i can personally vouch for; its fantastic and the 24 hour battery life owns. Thats my biggest problem i have with the ipod; that shoddy ass battery

why?

Well, the iPod is the most popular, so has the most accesories, including stuff to allow you to listen to your iPod whilst in the car (so uses your car speakers and existing radio to control it). I've not seen anything like this for the iRiver for example.

how much do Ipod batteries cost these days?

put it this way, my friends ran out and he was told it would be cheaper to buy a new iPod...

Also the battery really does suck on iPods, I get a good 16hrs out of my iRiver on a single charge.

@Squidge

I see, but wouldn't these accessories be quite interchangable anyway?

c0ncept: No, most iPod accessories actually talk to the iPod - so you can have the text of the playing song on your car's radio for example. So they only work with the iPod and nothing else.
