Query With Williams Defender

Ive had a go on defender today (been trying to get Mikie to work but think this may be due to a bad rom issue)

Anyway with defender I thought you could turn your ship around? I'm pretty sure on the old computer versions (even going back to the Electron) this was possible.

A button maps to fire
B button maps to thrust
select maps to bomb

Up and down do exactly as they say but left/right nothing.

Is this just a limitation due to number of keys available? I dont know how you turned round on the original cabinet (Im not that old)

Cheers for any help.

left and right should turn the ship around, it's always been that way, but have not tried this on the GP32 though.

You may prefer to run "Williams Arcades Greatest Hits" on Genesis thru DrMD. Defender runs with 4-way steering, works quite well.
For some reason though, after you start a game it gives you 5 or so extra men for no reason.
So it's not the purist's choice, but it's worth looking into. Also has Joust which runs great.

in the arcade version of defender, there was a button to change the direction your ship was facing. left and right would only push it left or right through space.

There was a reverse button and an up/down joystick or up/down buttons. Thrust button caused forward motion in the direction the ship was pointing. Reverse would do a 180 turn.
On the GP I find it easier to use 4-way joystick in the Genesis port, as otherwise there's just too many buttons for it to be workeable.

Sounds like the GP is one button too short to properly play this.

Never mind, Joust runs great though through mame

Yes it was a problem with Defender.... The button was R (the same to change screen orientation). I have changed to START button... It will run ok for the MAME GP32 1.3 release (to be released tomorrow).
