i know it's a few weeks old, but i forgot to post here when this came out. it's an entire ep made with the GP32, running CHN's PBSynth software and a test version of LilPigTracker ... post processing was done in audiomulch on pc.

super-fucked broken electronica beats, sick acid lines, x-treme swinging jerky rhythms and the required amount of noise - that's the first glorious release by deepravers (CHN, ross, nostromo, doner c and kiddy na did?addy of mp3death).

the files are encoded <60kbps .OGG, so they're perfect for an SMC! download the entire ep in a .zip:

and a snap of piggy @ work, eheeh:

Rock out with you GP out!!!

haha thanks man

we'll see how it goes when i take this shit live

i'm used to performing with LSDj, so ... i don't think it'll be too hard to move peoples asses ...

It's pretty cool... but exept for the coolness factor is there really any point at using the GP32 as an instrument?

It doesn't contain a synth-chip like say the gameboy and the C64... Since it can only use software-synths, i guess it really won't have any unique sound.... or something that couldn't also be done on PC.

This is purely a comment about the Gp32's use as an instrument or "sound" - it's not a critique of the tracker-project...
I do see the purpurse of having a tracker on the "go" ;)

thansk gp32rich!

this is true enough--no synth in the gp32. however, the amiga didn't have a synth either, and that's where Karsten Obarski blew the scene up with Ultimate Soundtracker!

i got into LSDj on the gameboy because i was fed up with my QY10 ... i don't mind VGM but i'm a much bigger fan of techno and synthy experimental stuff.

as it turns out, the interface employed by LSDj is the best i have EVER used for composing. fanboy raving ensues ... super fast to get things done and i LOVE the tile-style song editor (also seen in buzz and soundtracker2.6/icetracker/goattracker). very easy to do generative tracks using different chain/pattern lengths. also, the arpeggiators in LSDj are hella powerful, beyond anything i've used before ... and i've got a monomachine from elektron.

M-.-n is doing a similar interface for LGPT ... aka piggy tracker  the main goal is to do midi sequencing from a handheld. having .wav tracking is an awesome bonus! the hardware for midi-sync and message sending is comming along, it should be very easy actually ... i have PCBs for such a project, but need to add a voltage converter.

so why choose the gp32 as a hendheld for the project? i won't put words in anyones mouth, but coolness factor comes into play for me ... the gp32 is open source and supportive of homebrew developers. that's more than psp, nds, gizmondo, zodiac, etc have. pda devices suck for trackers!

The project really sounds interesting.

Love the EP by the way...

I've just gotten in to micro music this last year, and the genre has really grown on me. The interest started with me following a link from this board (in another tracker discussion I think) to FirestARTer's homepage - from that point on I've really been hooked... which came as a surprise to me, since I've not really ever been in to techno or electronica..... I've always been a fan of the compositions for C64 though.

Question about the piggy-port-project:

Does it handle both softsynth AND wavs... Or does the GP32 "only" play the synth on the provided numbers? In which case, is it then midi-controlled?

If it's the first mentioned - It almost sounds to good to be true!!!

right now piggy plays only .wav files, it's really taking it's first steps into the world! that said, M-.-n has made amazing progress thus far ... it's a usable tool already!

midi implementation is planed for the next step. i'm sure it will be versitle enough to do whatever you can imagine, or if you can imagine something new and mega-rad ... M-.-n is a very nice guy and will at least hear you out!

soft synths have been discussed and would obviously be a lot of fun, but it's not a definite thing yet. and if it is decided on, it'll be a while before it's implemented.

thanks for the kind words on the EP! in general i've gotten good feedback, it's nice to know people are checking it out. :)

firestARTer is on top of the scene, i first heard about his project to build a synth around the sid chip, then heard his music, now i use his LSDJ MIDI SYNC box! B)

I do see the purpurse of having a tracker on the "go" ;)

You are totally right about the non-specific sound of the GP32's interface although you might argue that each program develops its own 'sound' part of the way it's been programmed. For me, the main attraction in developing the piggy are:

+ Complementary to the gameboy: By synching those two little buggers, you end up in a very complementary setup.. you get the 'tone' of the gameboy but are able to add loops and crazy sampled shit on top

+ Tracker on the go: As you said, there is a huge potential there that, as far as I know, has never been tapped into. I write most of my music in the bus, in the streets, on the loo (rofl) .. and the ability to fast boot and write music anywhere is something I value immensly.

+ Small footprint live setup: Once you've done a lightweight setup with gameboys and a few effects, you really value the ability to do live without having a car full of shit and certainly not freakin laptop. The Piggy is definetly is going there..

+ LSDj-style midi sequencer: As *|| mentioned earlier, LSDj is one of the most amazing tracking/sequencing interface ever made. Both to write tracks and to do live improv. It seriously beats the shit of any competition. Having a way of sequencing external gears using a small portable sequencer running the best interface ever is a little dream of mine :)

Of course, nothing I've said necessairely implies the GP32, and I am in fact planning on porting it to other handhelds like DS,PSP and future GP incarnations. But, as I guess u'll agree, the dev. community over here is fantastic, the machine itself is very handy; for a whole lot of other tasks too.

That's it.. you got all my reasons :)

Cheers,

Cheers,

Well - It's not really like you needed to justify it. It's something that's been on quite a few peoples wishlist for a while :p (including my own)

As mentioned it was purely my thoughts upon the GP32 as a "live" device and otherwise providing unique sound for compositions....

But I guess you covered it's "live"-purpose anyway with the lightweight setup... I'm sold :p

@ starpause:
If the discussed program is a tracker - is the synth you hear on the tracks premade samples?

yes--it's all .wav loaded into LGPT ... some taken from CHN's synth, some other sources ;)

 Yeah dude, this EP is great. You already know how I feel about a GP Tracker, right ? Softsynths would rule, even real basic ones like a syne wave generator with variable legato. Or a sawtooth wave with duel detunable oscillators ? I'm not sure what the processor would stretch to though...

 you should check out my music  www.notofficial.co.uk

The processor is actually pretty fine.. so far sample playback of 8 trackz only take about 40% of CPU at 133Mhz.
