I prefer speakers, but it depends on the situation. If I'm listening to music on my GP32, which I do every now and then, i'll keep it in the case, hanging from my shoulder, with earbuds plugged into it. or if for some reason i need to be completely silent and i'm playing, i'll use the earbuds then cuz playing without sound sucks.

Speakers. Headphones come in two main varieties: the heavy-ass ear-clampers that make the sides of your heads itch and burst your ear drums, or the tiny little earbuds that fall out is you so much as zip your pants after taking a piss.

It's a difficult decision really. Decent speakers can set up a soundstage so real you could almost be there but you need a decent amp too and plenty of volume which is a bit difficult in an end terrace house :) Decent headphones give a lot more bang for the buck and can sound excellent if you pay more than budget money. However as much as I love my headphones I have to say I prefer speakers. Unfortunately my 5.1 Amp is crap for stereo so I tend to use headphones. That said, they do rock and have a ridiculous 5hz to 28Khz frequency response that you could never replicate with speakers unless you were a multi millionaire :)

All in all I much prefer decent headphone sound over the crap my 5.1 amp produces through my speakers but I still had to vote speakers as I know what quality sounds can be produced if you spend the money.

I prefer really nice sound-board headphones (about $200). The church I go to has them and I get to use them because I am learning how to operate the soundboard.

What about the old medium-sized ones that fit inside your ear but not near the canal?

I voted headphones - it's a tie again, 9 to 9. 5.1 speakers may be good, but I've never tried them so I just don't know.

Lets put it into perspective. You've all been to a concert right? That sound comes from speakers. It just wouldn't be the same if you all had to bring headphones and plug them into a giant amp with thousands of headphone jacks :p

On a serious note though if you are on a budget then headphones are the way to go. 100 GBP of carefully spent cash will buy you a pair of headphones and a headphone amplifier that will better speaker systems and amps costing several hundred quid. This is fact I've just done it :)

EDIT:

It's hard to believe that my brute of a 5.1 yamaha amp:-

Is actually out performed musically by 30 quids worth of tiny headphone amp.

Oooh! I tied it at 10-10.

I prefer speakers.
I like the way the bass hits my chest and the treble stirs my hairs ;)

You just don't get that physicality with headphones.

speakers! its not even an issue. i have a pair of wharfedales hooked up to my denon, and theyre infinitely better than the sennheisers i use.

Plus, i hate playing WITH sound on handhelds for some reason. I cant play without sound on consoles, but handheld sound just annoys me.

Speakers in concerts are mostly annoying. They're either too loud, too raspy, or the theatre accoustics are bad. I much prefer listening to something at home.

And loz: what about a handheld that emulates a console? Sticky issue? :p

Its drawn at 11 - 11

Who will win?

Who will walk away the victor?

Who will be purchased by me, ?

YOU DECIDE!
