Psx Emu

Actually they didnt use the pvr chips 3d capabilities and used the sh4 which is not too much more powerfull than the arm9.
no way! they were able to get tekken 3 and mgs playing perfectly well and with smoothing using mainly the 200mhz main sh4 processor?

A 426Mhz Pocket PC without a 2D/3D chip can run a PSX emulator at decent speeds (not perfect though). I fail to see why it's impossible for a GP2X considering they both use ARM chips.

For the bleem comment: Bleem did make a multigame version for testing before they started to specialize it for certain games and it ran alot of them quite well supposedly BUT they wanted it to look better and run better than a real PSX so that's why they made the individual versions.

As for GP2X having a PSX emu, I'd say sit back and wait we'll see if someone is willing to take on the task and how well it performs. Apparently LDChen has done some amazing things with fpsece and hopes to see what he can do with it on GP2X so that alone is very encouraging! Just wait and see what the future has in store instead of sitting here and trying to predict or shout down what may or may not happen.

Wrong, its still coming out to psp.

why would the guy cancel it for the PSP when its easier to code for since the PSP has a nice 3D chip when GPx2 doesnt?
Because he said that he didn't want to support the PSP because Sony is fighting as hard as they can to destroy the homebrew scene.
What a weird guy.

I mean... if he quits making homebrew for the PSP cause Sony doesn't want the scene to exist, than he's just letting Sony win, y'know?

Is it easier to code for than linux? because that's essentially what GPx2 devving is

Well at least he would get alot of experience doing it on the GPx2. Even though it will run like shit, it is a learning experience. Then maybe he will do something worthwhile like a SNES, PC-Engine, or NES emu after learning the system.

Dave. I don't get it... I know a good PSX emulator isn't likely to show up on the GP2X, but why would you say that about SNES when the GP32 can run SNES at about 95% speed for some games with sound on frameskip 3 when it's clocked at 150mhz? The GPX2 will have TWO 200mhz processors... that's over double the speed... Surely we'll have a perfect SNES emulator for the GP2X.

*EDIT*

Oh, and by the way, Sony's being fuckin stupid if they don't even want a PSX emulator on the PSP. PSX games aren't made anymore, so there's no way for Sony to make money off of them. All the PSX games that have been made are already/were already in stores/in the posession of people who bought them from stores. This means that there is no way for money to travel back to Sony... And if somoene were to make a PSX emulator, I would buy a PSP just for that because that's cool as hell. I can't possibly be the only person who would buy a PSP for PSX emulation, so by doing this they WILL lose money... fucking stupid corperations... If they want their money, they should let someone make a PSX emulator... Either that, or they should do what I suggested earlier... they should make a real PSP, one that plays PSX games. Oh well... it looks like sony won't be getting any of my money for a while either because they've been really fuckin stupid lately.

As I said before, you must have missed it. The GP32 runs SNES with NO transparency support, FS3 is much too choppy, and the sound is at low quality setting. Even at that it runs many games much too slow. Add higher quality sound, add transparency (big one), and play at FS0 or 1 and now the GP2x is struggling. Those are the things needed to be considered "perfect". I am not saying it is impossible but it will be very difficult. Someone of Reesy's skill level and perserverance would have to do it and everything would need to be ASM.

Two *333* MHz CPUs on the PSP aren't even enough to run everything smoothly yet. SNES is a bitch.

As for PSP of course Sony don't want everyone running free PSX games. If everyone started playing free pirated PSX games they won't buy many $40.00 PSP games you know. All they would sell would be blank Memory sticks, and those you can get from Sandisk so they wouldn'rt even make money on those.

Snes on the PSP is VERY playable, Dave. Okay so there may be a few issues, but mess around with the settings, and most of the games I've used are fine.

I am ONLY buying the GP2x for snes. It's all I want it for, apart from the hardware itself. The list of rpgs on the other thread you made is worth a lot of money.

Looking around the net, there is a real buzz about this new system, and I reckon a lot of new devvers will join the scene. Sure PSX is very unlikely in a DRmd way, but people are gonna try.

But it's snes for me....

Its not 2 333mhz processors on the psp the second core cant do anywhere near the work of the first as far as i understand due to all the restrictions imposed on it. The gpu is used in a similar ish way simply accelerating the graphics functions not doing the actual emulation looking at the version history for older versions of the snes emu. I dont see why everyone regards the psp as such a powerhouse for emulation especially when sony are closing down homebrew as best they can with firmware updates. But i'm not saying its a weak hand held its ridiculously powered for 3d games written directly for it.

Transparency will slow down everything to a crawl simply because of the amount of work needed to do it. However, instead of attempting transparency, we could raw background on one pixel, foreground on the next, etc, to simulate transparency. I think that could even be done in hardware.

Acording to the MMSP2 white paper available at the site:
"MP2520F can support three (3) staged alpha blending operations"

Call me sick, but I quite like the idea of playing (a few) psx games at 10fps and no sound. How uber-1337 is that :)

Personally, I think snes on gpx2 will be sweet. Yes, transparency needs to be dealt with, but think about it - every spare clock cycle that is available on both CPU's above and beyond that of the gp32 are going into improving the engine - no more overheads. Its sort of like when you earn just enough to cover your rent, and then you get a payrise of $50 a week, ALL that extra money is spending money baby!

diablo, warcraft 2, and command an conquerer

This day and age - I would of thought that would be so little to ask for on a new handheld console.

Its probably more likely you would get warcraft 3, dungeon siege and a new incarnation of command and conquer on psp. It may sound sound ludicrious of me to say what I just did BUT we are discussing the possibilities of ten year old games on the latest handheld device. Having these games on a handheld system to me would be ideal, thats why I'm even more likely to buy a psp now.

I really don't think there is a vast difference between the gp32x and gp2x, we already have great emulation for SNES, Megadrive, Atari ST, c64 etc. I still don't see it, I personally think a BLU gp32 is friggin ace and might even pop for one of them instead.

tekken 2 on the move will be excellent (even if it is the crappy psx version) ;)

The question is: How far will be 3D possible on a GP2X with a psx-emu and without special chip-hardware? Only enough for some special-effects in a 2D/3D-game or a whole 3d-game like tekken. Only time and the skills of the developer will tell.

Yes it is very playable on PSP. It may be the best SNES emu on a handheld, possibly better than what GP2X will ever do. It wasn't a dig on PSP I said it to illustrate that even a system as powerful as PSP still struggles with it. This means it will be even more difficult on the weaker GP2X.

What I want more (or at least before) a psx emu would be an amiga emulator. Its probably a more realistic spec to emulate and has so many classic games

He's not. He's supporting a weaker compagny that supports hombrew. Sony don't want anything hombrew on is psp, he doesn't realise alot of people would but the system only for the hombrew, that alot of people think that commercial psp games are lacking and/or are shitty (sorry for the word), and that some don't really care about umd videos. Sony doesn't understand that. I would buy a psp if it wasn't of these updates, windows and 200 steps to play something that isn't suposed to.

He's just saying thank you to GPH, because of their acceptation of homebrew, by developing for it. This will make alot of people consider the gp2x at the place of psp, for those who know wand care about emulators and hombrew, and it will make the community bigger because of this support. In the other hand, sony will loose alot from the type of customer that would buy a psp for homebrew and emus. To resume, It's a 'thanks' for GPH and and 'Go to hell' for sony.

buying is voting, deving is also voting.

as for the guy (sorry lost your name) who asked if the psp was easier to code than the gpx2, we don't know yet, since the gp2x isn't out yet. But consider that the gpx2 IS made for hombrew and emus, that the ARM9 is easy to code and overclock, that it have a 2d accelerator, unlike psp, and it will have support for homebrew so there's alot of chances that the gpx2 will be way easier to code than the psp.

Linux have nothing to do here, if you don't want to use the os to port something anyway.
