Psx Emu

Dave. I don't get it... I know a good PSX emulator isn't likely to show up on the GP2X, but why would you say that about SNES when the GP32 can run SNES at about 95% speed for some games with sound on frameskip 3 when it's clocked at 150mhz? The GPX2 will have TWO 200mhz processors... that's over double the speed... Surely we'll have a perfect SNES emulator for the GP2X.

*EDIT*

Oh, and by the way, Sony's being fuckin stupid if they don't even want a PSX emulator on the PSP. PSX games aren't made anymore, so there's no way for Sony to make money off of them.

As I said before, you must have missed it. The GP32 runs SNES with NO transparency support, FS3 is much too choppy, and the sound is at low quality setting. Even at that it runs many games much too slow. Add higher quality sound, add transparency (big one), and play at FS0 or 1 and now the GP2x is struggling. Those are the things needed to be considered "perfect". I am not saying it is impossible but it will be very difficult. Someone of Reesy's skill level and perserverance would have to do it and everything would need to be ASM.

Two *333* MHz CPUs on the PSP aren't even enough to run everything smoothly yet. SNES is a bitch.

As for PSP of course Sony don't want everyone running free PSX games. If everyone started playing free pirated PSX games they won't buy many $40.00 PSP games you know. All they would sell would be blank Memory sticks, and those you can get from Sandisk so they wouldn'rt even make money on those.

Okay, good point, I hadn't thought of that(the PSP thing)... I don't know why. I definitely should have... but then why don't they port some PSX games to the PSP and charge 10 or 15 bucks for them? They'd still be making a little bit of money, and nobody's pirating anything. And Even though I wouldn't buy any PSP games, I'm sure others who would want PSX emulation would still buy them too, so I don't think it would be a huge problem. And they'd still at least be selling a few extra PSPs.

About SNES, considering that the latest version of OSNES9XGP is a v0.3, I'm willing to bet that if it was given some more time, it could be perfect, or at least damn close to it. Just wait and see. Even if it's not 100% perfect, I have no doubts that you'll be suprised.

if psx did come to the gp2x ill slap my cousin (with his fancy psp) with a gp2x running tekken.

Holy shit... how cool would portable Musashi be? if we could get PSX on GP2X running anywhere near as well as SNES is on GP32, I'd be extremely happy. That would kick ass. I won't be dissapointed if it doesn't happen because I'm not really expecting it... but it would definitely be cool.

Transparency will slow down everything to a crawl simply because of the amount of work needed to do it. However, instead of attempting transparency, we could raw background on one pixel, foreground on the next, etc, to simulate transparency. I think that could even be done in hardware.

Hey, that was MY idea ;) I said that way back when I still had my Zodiac and I even put pictures up explaining it.

Nintendo does that by releaseing SNES games on the GBA but charges near full amount.

As for homebrew my reason is why they are so intent on stopping HB. Think about it if you had hundreds of free PSX games which are 3D and wouldn't look all that bad on the small screen, how many $40 PSP games would people buy? If you could play the PSX Gran Turismo for free would you rush out and buy the PSP version for $40?

My fear is when Sony feels that they have the PSP locked down they will commit the Firmware to ROM eliminating any downgrading or flashing of firmware for HB purposes. If they do that you are screwed.

People would still buy the games.

People buy sequels for £40 all the time even when there are numerous prequels available for the same console. People want the best graphics and new features. Many people hate the feeling of playing anything "old".

What you are saying is almost like saying there shouldnt be a commercial PC games market because you can easily emulate many consoles on a PC or that people won't buy PS2 games because they can just play old PS1 games much cheaper.

Flash player... I just realised something

If someone made it so that u could play flash games on gp2x then that would open MORe possibilities...

ahhh.. i can dream

Why do people keep quoting 2 333mhz processors, the psp only has one core capable of 333mhz. The second is simply a media core that according to the snes emu update is only capable of taking off 10-15% of the load. I say capable because its not implemented yet, so i dont know why people keeping quoting 2 333mhz processors when the second core isn't even touched in the snes emu and its pretty accepted that when it is the speed up wont be mind blowing as the core cant really do alot (not general purpose at all its a dsp after all)..... Which means its just being used for sound emulation if its ever going to be used at all. After all it is just a core made for decoding not for normal processing. The claim of 2 333mhz processors is very much bogus and completely misleading! Especially in 2d its forte is 3d (thanks to a gpu that mainly offers 3d functions not too many 2d ones), everything is geared for 3d as the main stream user wouldn't accept anything less now. Furthermore a few graphic functions still have to be done in software for the psp snes emu so even the gpu cant be used to full effect as of yet.

In this sense its hard to argue that the psp will be better for emulators. If i'm completely wrong about these cores i will kindly apologise. But i dont see why people should constantly slam the gp2x for being less powerful for emulation. If the cores can be overclocked anything like the gp32's it should be considerably better for emulation than the psp ..... But i'm not talking about play station here just snes! The psp has some obvious advantages for playstation emulation when it comes to 3d games. Why be so negative towards its power it'll only put off devs and potential buyers of the system. If it turns out to have terrible performance i'll probably be the first to critiscize
I just want to emphasize the psp is not 2 333mhz processors thats just ridiculous. Especially considering the second core the 'vme' has a max clock rate of 166mhz. But its a dsp so 166mhz doesn't convert into normal processor performance nothing near..... So its more like 333mhz, some 2d acceleration but the gpu cant do alot of the functions so parts are still done in software and some sound acceleration that does not sound like 2 333mhz processors to me!

why has no one mentioned the DS which has practically full speed emulation due to the fact that GBA emu was pretty advanced considering the capabilities of the system and the DS has the cpu of the GBA running at twice the clockspeed plus a whole other more powerfull CPU to utilise. It's pretty buggy though apparently.

Actually they didnt use the pvr chips 3d capabilities and used the sh4 which is not too much more powerfull than the arm9.
no way! they were able to get tekken 3 and mgs playing perfectly well and with smoothing using mainly the 200mhz main sh4 processor?

To clarify things there are two(2) psx emulators for the dreamcast. The first is Bleem that uses most of the dreamcast's capabilities and was made to run specific games only. The second is a fast and sloppy port of pcsx called pcsxdc that only uses the sh4 without any hardware optimization and runs games upto 15fps and is currently a dead project. The gp2x would hopefully do better than pcsxdc since programmers have 2 cores to play around with.

That's weird I posted in this thread last night watched the post go up and not it's not here... Thats the second vanished post this month.

Anyway the gist of way I said was that: Sony regards Emulation as Piracy, plain and simple. They would not ever allow such a practice because they're extreme in this additude to the point where they just BARELY gave us MP3 support on the PSP.

Also Megaman legends/Rockman Dash came out in Japan for PSP so atleast we know they arnt above relesing old PSone games for the PSP I'd just hope it had something extra added to it.

Yeah, Nintendo ports SNES games to the GBA, but they fuck it up every time. They change something for no reason, and the framerate sucks(maybe it's just something with the emulator I used, it can't possibly be my computer because it's definitely powerful enough, but most games were choppy and sluggish). They've even screwed up the NES ports. Take a look at The Super Mario Advance series. There's only ONE good thing they changed... In the GBA version of Super Mario World, they gave Luigi his higher, slower jump back, which is really cool... but the framerate sucks, and the colors aren't nearly as saturated as they are in the SNES version. I can't stand playing it. Some people like the ports they've made, but they're still buying the more expensive original games. You can even emulate NES on it, so you can get the original versions(which are MUCH better) of the few games they've ported for free, yet people are still buying the other games... Your reason for Sony keeping PSX emulation or ANY homebrew off of the PSP just doesn't hold water. They might FEAR that it will happen, or they might just be money hungry... I'm not sure. Either way, PSX emulation/ports will not make them lose money. I'd rather have emulation than ports though, because what if they port certain games but not others? They're definitely not gonna port every PSX game ever made, so some people will be dissapointed.

If they were smart like Gamepark, they'd support PSX emulation. I'm sure it would help them at least with PSP sales. Think about it this way... If you were sony, would you rather have a few thousand people buy a PSP and no games, or would you rather have them never buy a PSP in the first place? Unless they're losing money on each PSP sold, a system and no games is better than no system at all. Plus, even though I wouldn't plan on buying any games now, that doesn't mean that there's no chance of a good game coming along that I decide to buy... In fact, I've been wanting to try the PSP Twisted Metal game for a while, but I don't know anybody with a PSP in the area, and I'm not about to spend 250 bucks on a system and 40 bucks on a game unless I know I definitely want it. It looks good, but what if it sucks, and I just wasted almost 300 dollars? To hell with that... However, if there was a PSX emulator available for the PSP, I'd buy it as soon as I had money for it and get the emulator. Then I'd also buy the game... I'd be looking forward to the SOCOM game that's supposed to come out for it too... The way it is now, I have absolutely no desire to buy a PSP at all. They're losing money because they're stupid, and that's all there is to it.

You dont get it do you? NO major game company can support homebrew emulation because down the line when those games are classics and they want to start making money off them again through som form of retro revival THEY'LL be screwed over by illegal emulations floating around the net, if they were ever to try and shut them down after allowing emulation on their system to go unchecked then they'd look like hypocrits to every other company.

And yes I agree that it's Logical that they would perfer money from their own ports of these game to allowing people to play them again for free. That was one of the points I made in my previous, currently missing, post. But concidering how quickly and savagly Sony crushed Emulations attempts in the past like Bleem it's safe to say that they do indeed look down on the practice with disgust. (in regards to ports if they can sell you something for 40 bucks rather than 15 they;re going to do it, that's just buisness. But that they've allowed any ports to be made suprised me when I saw the box for Rockman dash seeing as they had made a lot of noise about trying not to make exact copies of PS2 games but I guess since it's a PS1 game it's exempt from having to offer new functions.)

Simply put regardless of the reason, Sony dose not give a rat's ass what you want in regards to Emulation, period.

I know they don't care what I want as far as emulation is concerned, but that doesn't change the fact that they're never gonna release ports of every PSX game ever made. If they do any, it'll only be really popular games like metal gear solid, maybe final fantasy 7, and gran turismo... stuff like that. FF7 is okay, but I hate racing games, and metal gear solid sucks, and I know I'm not the only one out there who doesn't like those games... so what about the people who want games that they don't release as ports? They just get the shaft, and that's fuckin stupid. Whatever then, fuck big corperations. Fuck Sony, Fuck Nintendo, and fuck Microsoft. If they're not gonna give me what I want, then I'm not buying their shit.

yeah, every game company is like that. they're in it for money, after all. a port of brave fencer musashi wouldn't sell nearly as much as a port of mgs ;) and don't ever expect these guys to support emulation, either. there's always money to be made from compilations so they're not going to throw that chance away by supporting/making an emulation machine.

for the mean time, the best psx portable would be a laptop..pretty much any.

I'm rather mad at Square for not making a sequal to FF7 for PS2 in spite that if they did ever made it would sell like hot cakes.

But instead that all time crappy FFX gets a sequal with chicks doing shit nobody cares.

And after like 10 years of waiting all we get is like some short film of FF7 for PSP and wierd ass gun shooter starring Vincent that SCREAMS Death By Degrees.

I want Cloud, I want Aerith, I want Tifa, I want Yufi omg come on. About freakin time they made a remake for player's all time favorite RPG ever.

Oh, sorry for the thread snatchin btw. :p
