but still... the gizmondo is not open source... you would have to crack that thing open and even then tiger telematics could still do "Firmware upgrades" like sony.....

so i would go with the gp2x cos you cant be too sure if the giz will ever have a big community :/

They have already done the firmware upgrades thing ;). I am not saying that I will choose Gizmondo and I will most likely not. I will probably wait the XGP release and then decide which one to buy because I like the XGP big screen and probably decent (not great but something) commercial support (3D games would be very cool if they are properly done) I don't care about the DMB TV that can be used only in Korea because the other handhelds don't have it so it doesn't make a big difference and if the homebrew scene is working as good as the GP32 one is I am sold. I would love XGP to double as a GSM though that it is very unlikely to happen I don't care that much about it and I also expect the price to be a little bit cheaper than the PSP so I think that it worths the 3-4 months waiting after the GP2X release just to decide which one to buy when you have the choice.

Why not get a PSP then. It has the 3d that you want and will have way more support. The screen is smaller than PSP too. XGP seems kind of pointless for someone outside of Korea.

DaveC, you are right but SONY doesn't want homebrew and makes everything possible to stop it like the firmware upgrades. I hope that Gamepark will help the homebrew scene as well as creating some commercial one (Capcom titles sounds great plus the Quake 3 Arena port is also awesome idea).

Actually, I do expect it to get playable. It may not run Tekken 3 or the last Ridge Racer to come out for the PSX, but I'd wager it could run the few 100% 2D games on PSX rather well. What were there... Some platformers, few rpg's, those Micromachines games, Bomberman...

I think someone said, that FF7 was playable on similarly specced PDA...

(Of course, if by playable one means "60 FPS, not an increment less!!!", they might be disappointed...)

Also, never say never. In 2015, when nobody codes for GP2X anymore, and there still isn't a PSX emu for it, I can say, that "there never was a PSX-emu for the GP2X then, huh?" But to say there never, ever will be, is foolish, and defeatism, and unpatriotic, whereever you happen to live.

My 200mhz PPC runs FF7 at about 25fps, Ridge racer about 30fps and Final Fantasy Tactics at pretty much full speed - Thats about all ive tried tho

As for 32bit 2D games nothing touches the Sega Saturn - Best Role playing machine ever released (if u lived in Japan that is) unfortunatly noones written a decent emulator for it to port

Megaman X 4 and up is only avalible on PSX.
incorrect, they are also available for the sega saturn, which had a true 2d engine in there which was superior to the psx for that kind of game. Do not in your wildest dreams ever expect emulation though.

oh yeah, and it was also the definitive shoot em up fans system too. A true next gen successor to the pc engine.

Hell yeah, Saturn was an amazing machine, and the 1st to fall under Sonys marketing clout

Did anyone ever buy a Gametrac?

Gametrac was the old name for the Gizmondo.
I know. I simply refuse to ever say (or type) the new name. :p

I loved my Saturn. Still have it too, play Guardian Heroes now and then.

Lotsa good Saturn games I missed out on too, but I don't wanna spend the bigbucks to aquire them now. I would love to get Shining Force 3 and Dragon Force for example.

Yeah! The Saturn is the system for shootemups! Too many greats, and man is the system a 2d beast!
Just got Soukyugurentai the other day, and it's too good. Def. one of the best.

and yeah, good saturn titles, especially imports, are very expensive sometimes. but if you look around, you can sometimes find good deals and alternatives to those guys that charge crazy overseas shipping for their saturn games on ebay.

You could get your Saturn modded and play, uh, "backups". I was planning on doing that, but I have a Model 1 Saturn and I guess modding those is a real bitch. :( I may still chance it one day, but I have to learn Japanese first so I can finally play Policenauts.

x68000, you easily beat my collection of 5 saturn games total :D

yeah man, modding a model 1 saturn is hard right? there's always those swap trick method that a lot of people use, not sure how good it is, though.

which of the 2 is the best buy to get an new open source console?

& will there be any psx or N64 emu for the gp2x?

NO!!! there will not be any *playable* N64 or PSX emus.

The Giz 1 is now dead because they will make the widescreen one to replace it. The DRM in the WS Giz will probably be wicked. It will be cracked like any but it will be a looooong time.

Don't be so sure about PSX... :)
Are you there Jebus? It's me, r4ygun.
If it's not too much to ask, please just let us play Castlevania: SotN on the GP2x

If you make this dream come true I promise to not kick hobos, cheat on my girlfriend, or jump the subway turnstile anymore. If you don't, I will kick hobos IN THE HEAD, cheat on my girlfriend RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER, and jump the turnstiles EVEN WHEN I'M NOT BROKE.

Cheat GF with hobos on a turnstile?

What is a turnstile?

For like the subways they have that 3 bar rotating thing (you see them at other places too) and when you put a quater in it alows you to rotate it once (you better be in it) and you get to the other side and go on the subway. You can just jump over them and not pay though.

Never been on a subway though, hope this explains it.

On topic I am going to be playing SNES NES, GB/C/A, Genisis, and all of those fps that get ported to everything. And of course homebrew!

Ha! I wish it were only a quarter! It's 2 bucks, which you actually put on a fare card through a vending machine first.

I'm getting the GP2x for snes, a little genesis (ps series), and the movie capabilities. It's icing that I can hook it up to a tv.

Indeed, damn metrocards, the only way to make them worth anything is to buy atleast 10 rides to get the two free rides (unless you get the monthly and even then you're kinda getting ripped off unless you use it more than twice a day.).. er anyway, I'm hoping to get atleast 2 new systems out of the 2X that weren't to my desires on the GP32. Movie wise it seems to be exactly what I was hoping the GP32 was a year ago!

I have the PSP and it's beautiful large screen but it's a pain to transcode video and I keep getting the feeling that PSPvideo9 forces everything to 15 FPS, because I can't seem to find a difference between the frame rates.
