Video

My understanding is no, so long as it does not use a proprietary codec such as a Windows Media-based one.

I do know for certain that no special format is required and that the system will automatically downsize videos up to a certain size, which I believe is 640x480.

My next question would be how do I go about reencoding xvid so that the files are smaller (and would I notice the lower quality on the smaller screen?)? Google is being very unhelpful.

Thanks

Doom9 is a great place to start. Complete with downloadable tools and a most awesome forum for newbies. And yes, the smaller the file the lower the quality (as a general rule). I use AutoGK with great success.

I think I read that the unit will utilize mplayer for video playback. That program plays back pretty much anything I throw at it.

I've slapped some DIVX5 videos onto an SD card (w.o.w vids) with resolution of 720x480, and the 2X played them fine without the need for any modification or conversion.

If anyone would like me to try there converted videos (to save card space), then feel free to throw them in my general direction :) (host them somewhere and send me the URL). I'll then test them and tell you if it worked or not :)

In general MPEG-4 is extremely fast to encode, especially compared to MPEG2. I get around 45fps on maximum quality mode on a 2800xp. There's also plenty of programs that ease the conversion.

Hopefully Mplayer will support softsubs too to improve the readability of subtitles on fansubs...
