Toshiba has a 3.5" 320x240 Organic LED screen out. Do you think it would be possible to retrofit GP2Xs with this for brighter, wider viewable, better power consumption?

I read that there is nanosecond response times down the road for OLED displays.

How long could the batteries last in the GP2x with this technology?

Thoughts?

OLED is great for everything, except longevity. Like plasma TVs they have a tendancy to burn-in and lose brightness very fast. This is the main reason they are not used much yet, they don't last.

The GP2x's display controller does look flexible enough to drive almost any screen in an existence. This is of course overstatement but after looking at the more detailed data sheets of a MMSP2 (the heart of GP2x) it could be done via DAC interface at worst. (and some additional chips).

Entirely different question is how much it would cost?

For just small quantity of units to retrofit it would be prohibitive. Imho this is not worth the efforts. Better buy more rechargeable batteries.

Sacre Bleu! You don't even have a unit yet and you're already planning to rip it apart!

OK, so the connections to an OLED screen will undoubtably be different to an LCD. The driving signals to the LCD screen are designed around the properties of the liquid crystal; an OLED will take completely different signals. Also, the mechanical mounting features of the OLED module will be different to the LCD module, every module is different.

AND, the article is talking about a "concept media player". Good luck actually getting your hands on one of the display modules!

I hate to rain on your parade, but this just isn't going to happen. You are welcome to try, and if you somehow succeed I'll be the first to bow down to your elite mastery :)

Agreed the technology is new, but I meant when the price comes down (maybe GP3x :D ).

As far as interface goes, try this from Kodak:

"OLED panels take the same input signals as LCDs. So you can add value to existing product designs and create new ones."

and the OLED info site:

Thanks for the fast response, don't you guys have anything better to do?

I meant this technology, not that actual screen.
Also maybe to keep the thing usable a couple years down the road.
I'm always thinking too much though,
for that matter why not 640x480 OLEDs in a year or two.
I have 15/20 vision w/glasses :)

Shall we start writing the GP2x screensavers yet?
