This hasn't been made perfectly clear as yet, but since the GP2X is coming with a CD with some stuff on it, I'd very much like to know what that stuff is. I've gotten the distinct impression that there are some emulators included, presumably for the NES, GB, and GBC, as nobody seems to be developing for these yet... Is this correct?

In any case, what else can we expect to find on this software CD that's coming along?

Forgive me if this is a dealer-specific thing - I'm rather unclear on that point.

I don't think that the disk will contain emulators. I think it contains software to sink up the gpx2 with your computer and also a program to create software for the unit.

Not sure though.

I wonder if getting a lisence for few of those commercial titles that were/weren't published on GP32 would be too expensive... Few of those on the CD would be neat.

You'll probably get a couple of homebrew games on the cd. I'm hopeing there may be a port of quake or doom on the cd.

I don't know anything about open quartz and free doom i assume it's tools to make your own games using the quake and doom engine.

I don't mind playing homebrew games i remember playing azcats on the gp32 that used up alot of my time. If there's anything like this on the cd i'll be happy until the emulators are up and running at full power.

Thats the last time I bother posting a link.

I could read the open quartz site but the free doom one i couldn't get in to. i understand about the open quartz one abit but its all new to me thats won't i ment by not knowing anything about it.

The engine for quake and doom are available but the data(graphics) are not, so it would not be possible to give them away in a useable form on a CD. These two projects recreate all the data of the original doom & quake engines which means quake and doom are now 100% free.

BTW have a scout around for the hi-rez image projects ;)

The Quake engine and the Doom engine are free and open source. Problem is the content isn't. Quake and Doom are still commercial games and can't be given away. So they are making replacement free open source content for the Quake and Doom engine so you've got something to play with your Quake/Doom engine port even if you don't own the original PC versions.

Edit: That happens when you used tabbed browsing: You answer a question that has already been answered half an hour before... Sorry.

If you get any emulators its likely it'd be a gift from Craig on a separate CD and not something GPH packed for you, that's not to say you shouldnt expect a game or two, I'm sure they probably did simple ports of a couple of smalle free linux games like a solitare or something but I wouldnt expect mroe than that.

I think the CD contains the drivers for transfering MP3s, Movies, Ultilies and the SDK...but ya know...this is only a guess...

Why wouldn't the SDK be on the disk? That's one of GPH's selling points!

From what I am hearing from some developers on #gp2xdev who have GP2x units already, it just comes with SDL. No tools, no guides, no example code like is mentioned on the Development page gp2x.co.uk. I don't know if this will be the case with final units, but they made it pretty clear they were not expecting anything else and that was OK by them. It might be less of a rosy prospect to those unfamiliar with SDL however.

Having SDL is better than nothing... atleast for people who know how to program. Non-programers probably get confused at the difference but that's moot anyway as they're the people who need it the least.
