I chose that I would like to have it, but i don't have to have it because wifi is nice and all, but the gp2x is meant to be a portable device and when your out on the road there probably isn't going to be a wifi connection, at least not any time soon. ;)

I'd love to have it, but it's not the sort of thing I would feel... err... empty about.

i would find it good only if you know someone with another gp2x (but other than that i dont think its all that necessary)

I think Wifi would give the gp2x a whole new set of capabilities. From in-home networking with your computer so you can have a wifi mp3 stereo set up in your house with it, or you could have some sort of video-type set-up thing. I don't know. It definately adds potential.

So, my choice was that I would like to have it, but I don't need to have it. Whoever bought the GP2X thinking wifi was going to be something standard had it all wrong.

My Dell Axim X50v had WiFi support, but after a half dozen tech support calls that ended with "it's not our fault but everyone else in the world" and no answers. After the incompatibility issues that I had dealt with, I've decided that until the technology settles down completely, I'm not trying, again. And, I got rid of my Dell. With all voluntary-based nature of GP2x community, I don't have a high hope.

Everything else on my network, the PC, laptop and the xbox can all do those things already, I would need some really good reason to get a wifi card, something that would make use of the fact that the GP2X is portable.

Now an SDIO TV receiver card, I could find reasons to spend money on one of those!

Not knocking your suggestions though, keep 'em coming.

A wi-fi device (802.11 or bluetooth) give to the gp2x a rush to be competitive with psp and so on...
a network (for gaming, for browsing, email) is an essential stuff on a flexible game system as gp2x.
I'm looking for information to place a bluetooth device inside attached to the main board in some way.
addressbook with mobile, gaming on network in proximity, gprs/umts connection on internet, syncronicity one another (card games? sport league?). it's REALLY important

I don't think GPH are trying to be competitive with the PSP, they are aiming at different markets.

The network for gaming will only be useful if the density of GP2Xs in an area is big enough to support it and if multiplayer games are made. I have never played my ngage or GBA against other players or wanted to but that's just me. Not sure how it would work playing against other players on the internet or if this will be supported.

Without a keyboard browsing on the internet could be a hassle, not that I would bother trying with such a small screen, would you even be able to view web pages properly or enjoyably?, of course it would have a certain coolness factor.

I think I will wait until it has been out for a while to see what other people are doing with their wifi/bluetooth.

For an emulator/multimedia player I'm still not convinced it is REALLY important, may be just a BIT important. Still, you made some good points

just to explain,

i mean that a blutooth dongle is REALLY cheap,
a player can buy ALSO a gp2x, because i think that a psp is sure better in game software.
who buy only a gp2x (like me) it buy for other than only playing.
it's a great hardware (even if without 3d chip), it's modular (it have linux inside and that's why it's easy to attach any device YOU want and not SONY want), have a TV out.
That's why i think a connection on my TV and a usb key and mouse, i'd prefer instead of a laptop that need 2 minutes to be booted.

The market are different, that's true, but i think that the GREAT difference is only due to the flexibility that gp2x can have. and a network is REALLY important in flexibility.
Mame support network game. That's what you need. And have a friend that play with me with Gauntlet III via bluetooth is a dream.
:)

my 2 cents

A few people are thinking that multiplayer network gaming is only useful if you are in proximity of another GP2X user, this is not true.

If you have wireless access in your home with a wifi ADSL router you can connect to a central game server over the internet which can link you up with other players all over the world! Multiplayer quake anyone?

I dont need WiFi, atleast not now. If I find a use for it later I may get one of those SD WiFi-things.. For now price is a bigger ussue.

Wifi would be nice not only for multiplay but for those who have a wifi in their house they could use it to get files from their PC, streeming movies anyone? And of course you can access the internet either on your own network or in places like universities, airports and some other public places that have wifi.

It's not very important for me but would be nice to have.

Would be nice. Multiplayer Quake, or any multiplayer game for that matter would be awesome. That said the price has to be right :D It would be great to browse the internet with wifi at home and such but then we start thinking about the size of the screen etc.

One day my GP2X when it arrives will do everything like the ironing and making the toast. For now though I am happy to watch movies, listen to music and enjoy plaing an emus or homebrew games that come along as and when. At some point would be nice to learn some coding and to give something back to the community but with my first child about to arrive. This will take a back seat for a while.

What would be interesting is how would one get the multiplayer element coded, the server up and running, the wifi support implemented and such like. I think if anyone were interested this may take a few people to get together , decide on a paticular function they want the GP2X to perform and for them to nail it.

Initially I think the guru's are going to be busy enough just getting everyones favourite stuff up and running well. Anyhow, keep up the good work everyone as despite the delays I still can't wait to get my hands on this box of tricks.

This is true but whats stopping you from playing quake on a bigger screen with a keyboard and mouse when your settin at home. After all you have to remeber it's a portable device.

I don't need the wi-fi itself however I'd like to be able to connect peripherals like a keyboard or a modem. So given the GP2x's usb port is slave only SDIO card with wi-fi might be mandatory. That damn USB slave port complicated things somewhat.
