Mips Vs Arm

Look at practical uses of the GP2x... it's a very capable video/music player (you can actually play a Divx5 codec video directly in it) and this is a reason alone to get the GP2x. Imho the rest (emulation and "homebrew") is just added bonus to the GP2x.

I can't see the GP2x competing with something like the iPod video in music and video. By the time you buy a 1 gig sd card, you're only $20US cheaper than a 30 gig iPod with video. Sure, the GP2x can do some more advanced video stuff (tv out to 720x480 instead of 320x240) - but the iPod has a much better interface, 30x the storage space (assuming 1 gig SD card on the gp2x), and is a social status icon (which cannot be underestimated).

The Gp2x does beat the ipod video in a few areas when it comes to audio and video, I'll readily admit (Ipod video claims 3 hours battery life with video, but can do 14 hours audio; 720x480 TV out on the gp2x; Ogg support on the gp2x). But I just can't see anyone choosing the GP2x for audio and video alone.

I am NOT knocking the Gp2x. I am extremely excited about getting mine in. There are so many game ports in development right now that I'm salivating over, being an open platform means lots of free games and free ports of open source PC games, and should be huge for emulation, and knowing a bit of SDL even I can take a crack at development. THAT is why I ordered a GP2x.... and I don't think anyone can honestly say that open development and what that will bring was not the main reason they ordered one.

What if, like me , you don't give a shit about watching low res movies on a tiny screen? What if you want high quality emulation? Then PSP is the best option?

ipod video is not a good comparison. other *real* pmps with screens larger than 2.5" and ability for multi video format playback are a better comparison to the gp2x. the zen vision is a good example of a good pmp, but those are fairly expensive.

still, for $190ish, the gp2x makes a pretty good pmp given all its features like ability to playback pretty much anything and tv-out feature. would be perfect if it had a hard drive, though.
it's also shaping up to be the handheld of choice for homebrew. no reason why it shouldn't be much better than the gp32!

320x240 is really tiny, if you want to watch a movie, couse they are all in 16:9.
16:9 or cinema content on a 4:3 screen, really big black borders on the top and botton.
And yes, the psp, can not yet play divx5, but tell me the truth, if you want to watch a movie on the gp2x, you must reencode the movie again to 320x240, or it would waste too mutch space on the sd-card. And if youre now reencoding to divx5 or mp4, witch is default a better quality, makes no different.

High quality emulation? Show me only one High quality Emulator, you have played on the gp2x :) And ask yourself the question in 6 Month.

The Problem here is, the folks want a gp2x, to play tons of warez Roms, SNES, NeoGeo, GBA, ... The gp2x would not sell, if there would not even be a running SNES emu.
Nobody would get it for its nice divx playback.
And with this background, you can get a psp, the commercial games are a lot better, than 10-15 year old games. BTW, youre on the legal site too.

Iam a big fan of Racing Games, C64 Emulation, and Homebrew.
I can have it all on the psp.

Its a private descission.
Of course you like your (payed) gp2x, the propaganda for it, says it to you.

A lot of people would disagree with that.

I will eventually get a PSP of my own (have been playing my neighbour's), mostly because a commercial project I'm involved with will be appearing on it, but also because I like to have every gaming system.

But for now I (or is that the wife? ;) ) have allowed myself to choose only one new gadget -- and the GP2X won that decision hands-down.

But like you say, it is a personal decision and everyone will value the various factors differently.

The problem with PSP is of course that it was never intended to emulate anything. Neither its controls (d pad/analog nub) or it's screen (16:9) was meant for it. You're supposed to play slick 3D games with next to no content, that suck compared to games even 10-15 years older. Sony with all its corporate power will also fight homebrew and emulation every step of the way. It was never meant to be and never will be.

I suspect strongly that you just know this is not true. I suspect also you know that converting is time consuming, difficult(???),and the storage on SD vs Memory stick is cheaper/larger, you know the resolution of a TV. Is it a the best Video Player cheapest/Best, or music player no its not, but its a good addition to the GP2X, and I suspect its what the chip is very good at, as that is its intended primary purpose.

High quality emulation? Show me only one High quality Emulator, you have played on the gp2x :) And ask yourself the question in 6 Month.

I'm not sure what you mean by high quality emulation. I suspect that most emulators available on linux, that require modest power will be both ported quickly, very very quickly, and you know that too. All of which are highly compatible, and would require little effort to get them running. Development for the GP2X with linux will be a breeze.

The Problem here is, the folks want a gp2x, to play tons of warez Roms, SNES, NeoGeo, GBA, ... The gp2x would not sell, if there would not even be a running SNES emu.
I think I have seen neo-geo emulation already.

Nobody would get it for its nice divx playback.
Its a feature, af a device designed to be well a linux computer in your hand that looks and feels like a handheld which means games/video/music/development, and I think you know that too. Video is a good feature of the GP2X that lords it over the GP32, becuase the GP32 did not really have this facility and you know why.

And with this background, you can get a psp, the commercial games are a lot better, than 10-15 year old games. BTW, youre on the legal site too.
Everyone knows/accepts that the GP2X commercial offerings will be slim on the ground, but most people are aware that. Sony will endevor to stop homebrew as quickly as possible. I suspect they have tolerated it thus far, becuase games have been slim pickings. I'd be amazed if they don't start heavily pushing DRM movies on the PSP very soon. All "this it will be hacked" is all well and good. I think people underestimate Sony engineers.

Iam a big fan of Racing Games, C64 Emulation, and Homebrew.
I can have it all on the psp.
. You will I suspect have C64 emulation and MORE Homebrew on the GP2X, just becuase there is more homebrew available for linux.

Its a private descission.
Of course you like your (payed) gp2x, the propaganda for it, says it to you.
If the propaganda is its linux, you can develop for it,it can play movies, its better all around and cheaper than GP32 was then, it is just that. Don't be such a DaveC

I thought the same, some Month ago, issent it a wonder, that every PSP, sold until now, can be downgraded, to 1.5, and play ware(z), and Homebrew, Emulation.

Yes, the PSP, was build, to play High Quality 3D games. BUT it also got a 2D Framebuffer.
BTW, the Playstation 2, did not have a 2D Framebuffer.
Also sony did not fight against Homebrew devver. They release a new Firmware, thats all.
The PSP, offers for me a good new platform, fast and mips based.
All new machines hitting the road, are now mips, and no longer arm based.
PS3, Xbox380, psp. So the psp is a real nice toy, starting learning mips cpu architekture.

Yes, the D-Pad of the psp, is not the best, compared to the gp32 stick. But the a-stick, is compareable.

Tell me, that you ever want to stick with the old console games. All folks are crying here, to get new system emulations, like UAE, neo-geo, GBA. WHY ? If the NES/SNES are so good, why demand new system emulation ?
The truth is, everyone wants new, cool stuff, and some emus to live in retro times.

btw, yes, 80% of the psp games are crap. But the 10 games, who are not, are worth the money.

Why do you think Sony continues to release new firmwares. I assure you, it's not to improve the gameplay ;) Also they've made perfectly clear about warranty/service issues of hacked units. I don't want a system where I have to change firmware constantly. It's awkward and sooner or later I just know I'd brick it.

Once again, controls are horrible for 2D emulation. Especially for 2D diagonal moves. I just hate that d-pad and the badly placed analog nub. Because of this the PSP will never be an option for me.

And actually, not everyone want new "cool" stuff. I care nothing for new games. I'm not impressed by the 3D hype and (apart from mmorpgs) it's been years since I was interested in a "new" game. All I want is to satisfy my retro hunger. For that I want Colecovision, C64, Atari ST and hopefully Amiga emulation. If I care for any "new" emulation it's Amiga. Not because the NES/SNES isn't good but because it's a system I love. I also know good Amiga emulation may be impossible or take a long time. But hopefully with a good asm core and full use of the GP2X components it will be done sooner or later.

AFAIK, PowerPC is not mips.

It's your opinion. For games, I prefer the DS 10 times more than the PSP. And the open nature of the gp2x appeal to me.
And don't forget that the gp2x is cheaper than the PSP.

Theres one truth - the d-pad on the PSP is almost unusable; Were it not for the casing being over it, it would'v worked.. but is there a Nintendo patent in the way perhaps? Regardless, I can't do diagonals at all while playing.. I have to cosiously stop and position myself and push to get a diagonal sometimes. Terrible. (So CaSTaway lets you use d-pad or the analog nub at your discression.. but you basicly can't use the d-pad). Apparently the d-pad on 1.0 models was better.

Remember for Mirko, hes making the case that if he wanted older emus, hes already got a GP32 which does them well; ie: C64 is pretty good on the GP32 already, and hes got it on the PSP too.

Actually, as far as I know PSP is the only new MIPS console around.

Nintendo DS - ARM
Gizmondo - ARM
GP2X - ARM
PS3 - PowerPC (cell processor)
Xbox360 - PowerPC
Nintendo Revolution - PowerPC

Exactly. Actualy, it was the Old one that was MIPS based: PSX, Nintendo64 and PS2.

There is TV out in the GP2x. Flash prices are steadily going down. You can have more than one SD card and SDIO might allow other media. It's so unfortunate the GP2x doesn't have an USB host thought.

The GP2x didn't really ship yet. You could say the same before PSP's launch.

Actually for emulations I'm interested mostly in ZXSpectrum and Atari 8/16 bit and most of the software for these are abandomware now. So legit too.

Iam a big fan of Racing Games, C64 Emulation, and Homebrew.
I can have it all on the psp.

I want flexible media player (mp3, ogg, mpg, divx), TV-out, ability to read texts and something to fiddle with. The GP2x will satisfy these needs and unlike the PSP there isn't a need of constant struggle with Sony. I understand someone might like the PSP very much but the company... Sony doesn't want your "homebrew" activities at all. PSP is just a medium to sell content in a form of UMD disks for them. "Homebrews" are like insects for Sony.

Its a private descission.
Of course you like your (payed) gp2x, the propaganda for it, says it to you.

A rationalization eh? :)

The same can be said about everything.

As for the emulator situation, while there are none right now, technically, it seems very likely that we'll see improved versions of most of the popular systems from the GP32 - and if you've used those emulators, you'll know that most of them are actually quite impressive.

It's also worth considering that you will occasionally be "locked" out of homebrew every now and again when Sony updates the firmware and you have to wait for it to be cracked.

the three things that made me sell my psp were the d-pad, the 16:9 screen(in the case of emulators), and the not so good commercial games outlook.
everyone knows the d-pad is crap for diagonals, and this is especially bothersome when playing old/retro games on emulators. stretched images on the gorgeous, but slow screen was a turnoff with emulators also..
and the few games that i had for my psp(mgacid, wipeoutpure, lumines), were IMO some of the best of a pretty small lineup of games that didn't have much coming up..

if the psp had a better d-pad i would have held on to mine, even with the slow lcd, since it's a nice and powerful machine that had and probably still has a big emulator scene. the d-pad was really that bad for me, and the a-nub is no substitue ;)

but if these things don't bother someone, i can see why the psp would be the best for them.

Sony will eventually win with the PSP. Homebrew is not its target, just a causlty.

Sony wants to kill the so called 'Pirates' (and bulldozing HB at the same time would not hurt.)

Eventually every hole in the firmware will be patched.

Can you imagine how small and intricate a mod chip would be needed for the PSP?

could you imageine installing one yourself? (assuming that the parts are even physically accesible)

Eventually every hole in the firmware will be patched.

Just like Symantec conquered the world of virus? :p Sony's fighting the war that is impossible to win. There are so many smart hackers out there who can always one up whatever Sony can come up with. Just like there is no software with 0 bug, there is no perfect security solution. Unless those hackers lose interest...

yeah, modchips for a psp aren't that hard to foresee

Yes however it can be improved to the point that it'll we very tiresome to crack. Look at a PSP now with its switching of firmwares. If it will get more hard and time consuming then interest in "homebrew" activities will slowly decay. For sure always there might be someone who will be still interested in a hacking but this will be a very "underground" then.

At other hand big numbers of sold PSP's units gives a bigger pool of potential hackers and possibility for a "black market" extensions such as modchips. But this isn't a proper situation imho as both the consumers and Sony is losing this way. But what I know? For a big company sometimes "politics" are important as much for governments (with added bulshits too).
