Do we get any software with the GP2x to convert dvd's?

I never had the pleasure of a GP32, I only heard about the GP2x from a lik-sang newsletter so this board has been my main source of info.

Any details would be great.

PS

I wont actually get the GP2x until Christmas day!!!!

you can convert on your pc a dvd and upload it as divx on gp2x

do you mean this?

no dvd player is inside gp2x

most current DVD drives come with a program that can convert DVD to video. mine actually came with two, Nero and some other program I never use. anyway, a little searching should find something you can use. for commercial DVDs its a little tougher, all you need is a program like "DVD Decrypter" before you can convert it. also, if you can afford to use the space on your SD card, keep the videos at 720x480; when using a TV-OUT cable, video isn't scaled down. :D

No, i mean do we get the software to convert the DVD to the avi file or whatever format the GP2x will read? Then load them to a SD card for the GP2x to play. I have had a look on the internet and the software out there is quite expensive.

Any suggestions for a noob?

Use AutoGK (auto Gordian Knot)

I can get most DVD movies down to 500mb PERFECT quality 320x240 res. 30fps
I guess it can get smaller, 15fps=250mb?

We need to sticky this because we keep getting requests.

Or ask the distributors to put AutoGK on the CDs

Edit: added second sentence

Ripping most (nearly all) DVDs that you can buy in the shops and converting them to an AVI or any other format is illegal in the UK and US, even if it is for your own personal use.

So I'm guessing that it will be highly unlikely that GPH or any of the distributers would be including software that will allow you rip DVDs, mainly due to after sale support and queeries, as well as nasty letters from film studios lawyers.

EDIT: doom9.net and videohelp.com are good starting points for anything to do with converting video files.

AutoGK has nothing to do with ripping DVDs, I believe I mentioned that you need more software, it is only concerned with converting mpg2 streams.

On Linux you can use a host of programs to convert DVDs to avi's my personal favorite is mencoder, tons of options=tons of fun. Most GUI based DVD(rippers, encoders, transcoders) on linux use mencoder as their backend so why not just use it directly? But if you need something more graphical theres Drip and DVD::rip. Or just look here www.linuxlinks.com

Not that you asked :)

Show me that law, I live in the USA and for some reason I think that is just a bad rumor. *rips all his owned dvds* CRAP cops

© is marketed by that person or another acting in concert with that person with that person's knowledge for use in circumventing protection afforded by a technological measure that effectively protects a right of a copyright owner under this title in a work or a portion thereof.

It's called CSS (Content Scrambling System), and under the DMCA, circomvention of which is illegal.

I've been playing around with AutoGK for a few days. Works awesome for what it is.

About it being illegal to backup a DVD that you own.. cant really say much except fuck them. If i bought the DVD, then i'm entitled to make a backup. As long as your not selling it or sharing it, then its within your rights. Just because the MPAA (and other such) can influence laws to be passed, doesnt mean they make any sense.

Other examples of rediculous laws:
In Pennsylvania, all fire hydrants must be checked one hour before all fires.
In West Virginia, no children may attend school with their breath smelling of "wild onions".

Sorry this is off-topic but i had to vent.
