It seems that the general feeling around the campfire (or at least the people iv spoken to) is that the GBA emu was never realeased publicly, and work has stopped on it.

Well, just having a scout round overnet, i found it. It came with a rather short readme though, and had no date. Im wondering if anyone can shed any light on the matter.

I got it running with GeePee, and loaded up a few homebrew GBA roms, and it seemed to run just fine, if a little slow.

Anyone else had any better sucess?

(The last date on the file was May 03 2003)

I found it on edonkey and it loaded up ok but didnt want to run any roms (this is on my gp). I didnt want to keep tryin cos i read sumwhere that theres a hacked version floatin about that clocks ur gp way to high to damage it... scary <_<

We don't talk about GBA emus around here. Want something that plays GBA games? Go buy a GBA. They're still commercially and widely available, so go spend some money on one instead of just downloading emulators of it.

suppose i should buy a snes, and a megadrive and a gamegear and a gameboy and mastersystem and a portable dvd player while im at it too........

I was only intrigued, anyway it wont load commercial roms. Theres no law againsed homebrew is there?

Did you notice the part of my message that said "commercially and widely available". SNES and Genesis and all those others are not still being marketed, and therefore do not fall under those conditions.

I don't see any problem, let them have their GBA emulator. Oh, did I forget to mention that it runs at 166 MHz? Whoops!

Also ... it runs games at 1-4 fps, doesn't support mode 7 or any rom > 4 MB.. it might be good for homebrew games, but that's all it's good for like Gavtheman said.

No speed, no sound, no save: It's unreleased alpha for a reason.

Yeah, I did notice as it happens. And I wouldent go as far to say Mini-disk players and portable dvd players aint commercialy avalible either. But people still listen to mp3's and watch films on the gp32. And there are whole boards dedicated to them.

And i wouldent go as far to say that Flashable carts for the GBA are widely commercialy availble either.
It wont load COMMERCIAL ROMS. Its all freeware, so why does it matter what system its on?

But this is all really off the point, post stuff like this in "Is piracy a crime thread", or the one about emulation would do just aswell.

:p
GBA anyone?

Iv got a gameboy advance already, and loads of games, it would b one of the systems that i could legally own the roms 4... i just think it would b easier to take my gp and a couple of cards away rather than my gp + gameboy advance + a load of bulky carts :p

NssOne

You do like to take it upon your self to tell everyone off when you get a chance, don't you!

I wouldn't have said it was telling off more a pointing out

I don't yet own a gp32, due to not receiving money I'm due but even I'm getting a bit sick of the question being asked, my main reason for purchasing the gp is to play old emulated games, watch films and listen to music on the go.

I for one don't have the best part of 500 pounds to buy a portable dvd player, nor do I want to buy a minidisk player.

all boils down to is, if you want to play a "commercially and widely available" system, then buy one.

The reason why so many people are sensitive about the gba emulator that is floating around is due to a few reasons. The system is new and emulating a game that just hit the shelves that day is seen as being more of a piracy thing and a threat to sales than emulating a console that can no longer be purchased like and atari ST good luck finding one of those in a store. As well alot of people fear that if decent GBA emulation is achived it will draw unwanted atention to the gp32 from the big N and lamers that just want to pick up a gp32 to pirate GBA games. As well another real reason that this is such a touchy subject is due to the fact that this emulator was never publicly rleased and was acctually leaked along with a bunch of other private versions of emulators and other software. The gp32 scene has done its best to ignore and stop the distribution of this software inorder to keep emulator authors and comercial developers from turning their backs on the GP32 scene. The gba emulator does play commercial games however it is no were near playable but is impressive at a technical leve much like the posrt of quake which is impresive because it can be done at all. As you can see this sort of thing is touchy for a number of reasons which is why so many people will jump on your case if you talk about it on this board.

I only like to bash the people asking for GBA emus. I'm a strong believer in the idea that the GBA does not need to be emulated on the GP32. I've seen plenty of people asking for GBA emus for GP32 (No, not exactly just on this board, or on top of that, boards at all). Granted, the GBA emu for GP32 is not fully capable. But then somebody sees it and try to press on to get it to become fully capable. Then it gets used to pirate commercially available games.

And on another note: In the space that a GP32 uses up, you could fit a GBA SP and about 4-5 carts (the fifth being inside the GPA). So what's so wrong with lugging around the GBA and 5 of your favorite games? And using the the GP32 as a movie or mp3 player is different than using it as a subsitute for another machine that plays proprietary software.

Its a bit like one of them types that says "im a vegitarian", but eats fish/milk/eggs etc.

In the real world, in the eyes of the law - all roms which you do not own on a cart, no matter how old is copyright theft. Period.

Everyone fails to mention of course, that you can still buy plenty of Game Boy (old gameboy) games and consoles in stores. This is not an obsolete console, nor do many treat it as such.

So no, you cant have your cake and eat it. You cant say that all these Nes roms you got are ok, 'coz i couldent buy em'. You cant say that all those films you got aint modified from their original format and that you didnt download em all off kazaa.
This was always going to happen with a completly open source console, and thats the whole point. You cant stop what people develop for it, if someone released a perfectly working GBA emu tommorow, with all the problems that itd bring, nobody could stop it.

So where do you lie with piracy?

Why bother emulating GBA? If someone finally perfected an SNES emu there's your GBA right there! (Hello burn ward? Major burnage)

so what about the ppl who download the music they already have copies of, or films the same.

I think there is a big difference between downloading a few roms for a games system that was released over 10 years ago and one that has only been out for a couple of years, yes the original gameboy is likely still avilable in second hand shops, in places but you seem to be focusing your energies on a system that is currently available, curiosity or not, you mention linker carts and other gba accessories to play homebrew and pirated games on, you have your solution to your problem there, buy those items and play homebrew stuff on the move.

WE all want to keep the system from being noticed by nintendo and their collection of lawyers, who would likely be able to kill off the handheld easily if they put their mind to do so, as has been mentioned by other more regular and experienced ppl than me, we tend to keep quite on gba emulation for reasons stated in replies above

you mention copyright, not many ppl realise that you only pay for the right to listen to a piece of music or to watch a film or play a game and the only thing you actually own is the materials that make up the package and the media it comes on.

How ever you try going into a shop and asking to exchange an old vinyl album for new cd version, or old video cassette for new dvd you would get laughed out of the shop, so I payed to use games from old systems, I gave the company my money, for their entertainment product, so now I will download in a format that allows me to use in a new way.

Looks like someone is a little angry... Just be patient, enjoy the current batch of emulators, and hope someone gets the courage/time/skill to code an SNES emulator (which is .....what? 100 times better than a GBA emulator?) if you want to play GBA games, buy a GBA and a flashcart.

Don't GP32 fans want to see the quick demise of GBA and the rise to power of GP32 across the world?? Just a thought :D

(Actually, I'd rather the "masses" kept the GBA and the GP32 didn't turn into a big commercial thing.)

You, sir, with all due respect, are an IDIOT.

It's beem discussed before - GBA emulation is not possible on the GP32. Even if an emu that is fast enough could be written, the GP32 does not have enough RAM to run anything except the very smallest GBA games.

No matter what we say, huh?
