So I got me GP2X today, and it looks cool and pretty (minor issues with the boot time, but I got the note that mentions it's being worked on). One issue though: I can't get any of the programs off the CD to actually run.

I've tried loading it on both a 128meg SD and a 1gb MMC. I go into 'Game' to select it, get a black screen, and... nothing.

Tried Lines2X as well, same black screen. Should I be running it through something else?

Text works, MP3 playing works, video sorta works (audio but no video, but then it was a fairly large Xvid off the 1gb MMC, and I understand there are also issues with that).

Any input? Do I need to tell Craig I've got a faulty unit?

You need to install the SDL libs, do a bit of searching/reading and you'll be fine. Quake will work without them but you still need to fetch a few files that aren't on the CD. Research!

(just to be like everone else who felt the need to post the same answer again and again)

I've installed the SDL libs and the emulators still don't work. When I try to play the video from Craig's CD it complains about wrong format... great test video. When I try to read a picture taken with my digital camera on the SD nothing happens (maybe the picture is too big, but come on...).

If anyone has ideas I'd be happy to try anything.

He's a nice friendly link, tells you how to play SNES, Quake and Hexen. B)

This should help.

After more trying at installing SDL, updating the firmware, none of the games and emulators worked. I was playing around with other options as I was unable to use the emulators. In the process since the beginning I turn the thing off and on a few times. Then I try to boot it ne last time before putting it away and... it doesn't boot anymore. A nice screen full of colored lines and nothing more. Removing the batteries, the SD etc didn't change, still only colored lines at boot. I've had it for 30 minutes and after not working at all it's now a brick. BRILLIANT.

Email sent back to Craig's shop to send it back and get my money back. Waiting all this time for that was really a wonderful experience...

The batteries that come with the unit suck. They run out in 10 minutes. Put in a couple of new ones to test if the unit works and then get rechargable 2500+ mAh NiMH batteries ASAP.

That did the trick. I won't mention anything about the batteries being brand new in the box and not even lasting an hour...
But I still can't run any of the emulators even with SDL libs installed.

I had the same problem but I brought rechargables and now it lasts alot lot longer :D

Are you sure you put everything in the right place? If you haven't already try Frodo2x. Download here and follow the instructions in the readme file.

Just out of curiosity, what batteries do you use and how long do they last on average?
