I'm still waiting for my unit, but I thought I should at least get the toolchain set up so that I can start developing (just little test programs at the moment, no free time I'm afraid).

So far I've really only used IDEs to do any serious programming so the whole GNU tool chain is quite new to me.

I was wondering if anyone who's already done it would be able to update the wiki with a quick how-to explaining how to get up and running on linux and on windows.

I'm probably going to be setting up tools on both systems, so if no one volunteers I'll gather all the info I need to get up and running alone and publish it myself.

Cheers

My Linux machine is only 400MHz.

Yet it dies a lot less than my Windows XP laptop. Hmm...

In fact, it only dies when I right-click on a spelling mistake in OpenOffice...

I would use Linux for developing, but that PC is on the floor and horribly uncomfortable when sitting at it for lond periods of time.

VS, Eeeew..... doesn't Dev-C work as well? What about the real devs that are running Linux? :- P

I'll probably be doing my deving on linux, just because I prefer it as a working environment. I only really keep windows for games.

Since I already have all the GNU build tools installed on my linux laptop it should just be a case of reading up on those tool, especially the GCC flags, and linking against the right libraries, yes?

On windows things are a little less clear at the moment. I've downloaded MinSys, the windows DevKitPro installer and Dev-C++ 4 and I'm looking into exactly what I need to do to get a GP2x compatible binary out of them.

I'll hopefully have everything sorted by the end of the weekend, but it would still be good if someone who knows the tools well would put some newbie friendly info in the wiki. Something that shows you how to go from a fresh winXP install to having an SDL program display a bitmap on the GP2x would be amazingly useful for a lot of people.

Visual C++ 2005 Express has a feature called Custom Build Rules. You can tell it to use the binutils in devkitGP2X to compile the project.

Edit: I've made a simple rules file now that allows me to build a GP2X executable file from within VC++2005 Express (without using a makefile). I used Rlyeh's Minimal SDK and example as the basis for this test. Now all I need is the GP2X to run it on.

Any chance you could stick the details in the wiki? Might be handy for someone.
