I thought to solve the gp2x joystick issue you could replace the gp2x joystick with a gp32 one from lik-sang

If i remember correctly someone said they don't natively fit, i see no reason one couldn't be bodged on though

You can't. The GP32 stick has 4 switches and the GP2X 8 switches. No go.

You could find one that has 8 axis, and a click. A gp32 one wont work thou.. only 4 axis :)

Just look around on google and itll find ya some stuff :p

Thats on the mobo; I doubt hes talking about yoinking out the h/w controllers .. just the plastic stick itself. I doubt you could just screw in the GP32 one, but who knows.. I don't have a gp2x yet to see :)

Is the gp2x one so bad?

Well from reading from what some people have said its meant to be...unresponsive, goes up when you press left, goes down when you press right etc....so basically its no good for games.

This is the only thing that ive heard that is bugging me with the machine.....i havent got mine yet ( should be with me very soon ) but to have a crap joystick on a portable machine is no good to me.

everything is firmware related - that will be fixed

but the deadzone can't be fixed
and i think its the worst thing

I got mine yesterday, and I can't put the thing down. I don't mind the joystick on it at all. It's not the same as any other joystick I've ever used in the past, but it only takes a little getting used to. Everyone was bitching and moaning about all these things that are going to be inherently flawed about this device, and I can only find one thing I don't like; and that's the battery life, which isn't terrible for how new this thing is.

I don't know much about programming, so I won't be doing any software development on the thing; but even at the slow growing rate it's at right now (which can only get better from here), I still consider my $200 a good investment.

For anyone that's contemplating one of these, but is not going to buy one because of all the rumors floating around these forums, just grow a pair and get one. Rumors are simply that: rumors. Vaporware. They mean nothing and have no foundation. I bought into this blindly with the highest hopes, and all of my worries have vanished. When the rumors and crap started getting REALLY thick, I contemplated cancelling my order, but decided against it. Best move I've made in a long time, I say.

I imagine that when the GP2X goes "live" in January, there will be an explosive adoption of the technology, and people will look back at the early "bumps in the road" and laugh.

It is a bit stiff, and the with sweaty fingers quite slippery, so a different (maybe concave) plasticcap would be nice.
Deadzone is a bit bigger than that of the GP32 but it isn't as bad as some people say. Everything else is firmware related.

On the bright side of things: It seems to be really durable.

Hmm... There was a topic about this very thing just yesterday or 2 days ago... Apparently The GP32 stick cap(the plastic piece that has to be removed to take the case apart) will not fit over the actual stick(metal piece that goes into the little box containing switches) because the hole in the cap is too big. However, with slight modification(making the hole slightly bigger), the stick cap from a MadCatz RetroCON's analog stick will fit. According to Cave, who tried it(it was my idea, but I don't have my own GP2X to try it on), it gets rid of the dead zone problem, and it is also much easier to use because the top is rubber, and it has a concave in it.

LOL, I just found ANOTHER thread about it... Since the 2nd thread has a link to the first one in it, I'll just put a link to the 2nd one here.

Apparently TelcoLou did the RetroCON mod as well, and he's very happy with the result.

It controls like a zodiac analog does for emulation. With a large dead zone where you have to push the stick to the physical limits to get it to register and lots of unintentional diagonal registers. I gave a suggestion of how to reduce the accidental diagonals with that chart I made but they don't want to do it that way  so we are stuck with dodgy controls unless they can be hardware modded.

I like the stick... I was so prepaired for something much worse from all the negative comments that when I actually got it I was pleased with it.

Sure there is a large deadzone but the stick is tiny.

Try playing a Pac-man type game where you need precise timing/control, it is nearly impossible  due to that dead zone.

Was pac-man originally equipped with dedicated 4-way Joysticks ? Wouldn't suprise me.

I know that even on my mame cab, I have 4 8-Way sticks (4 player, awesome), playing stuff like PAC-MAN or RallyX is difficult, however. To the point that I am thinking of swapping the sticks out with some 8 / 4 way switchable sticks.

I find the same playing retro stuff like pac-man on the xbox using the analog stick. Pretty much fine with the d-pad though.

Pac-man on my NAMCO DTV is just beautifull however, as it is a dedicated 4-way stick.

Cheers

Martin

my joystick doesnt have a dead zone and its quite responsive. the only *slight* issue is the accidental hitting of diagonals from time to time
Ya, ive done that before. Its mostly the way I hold it thought. I naturally want to pust upright instead of right. Besides that, all is good.
