Alright, so far I am loving the GP2X, but I have a few problems with Emulators/Games.

First, let me describe my setup: SanDisk 1GB SD card, Energizer Rechargeables (2500mAh), 1.0.1 firmware update, LIB files loaded. All my emulators reside in their own folders with the roms either in the same folder as the .gpe file or as in the case of NKNes and NK SNES, the roms are in the ROMS folder. Please keep in mind that I DID follow directions because I know how important it is to have everything in its place!

NK NES works great, but when choosing a ROM, I get a pink screen, unless I press the left shoulder button which somehow activates the background with flying Mario and Pac-Man on it. This is weird.

NK SNES is kinda slow with sound, but I know that's being worked on.

NeoGEOCD doesn't seem to want to run. I followed the instructions and even downloaded a HUGE 64MB rom file just to try and see if it would work, but after launching the emu, the screen goes black for some time and then goes back to the main GP2X menu!

C64 Emu: Upon launching Frodo, it goes back to the main GP2X menu right away.

SMSPlus2X: Followed directions and changed the name of one of my roms to rom.sms and tried running emu. Loaded game alright and I even got sound, but as soon as I pressed start, it went back to the main GP2X menu!

RockDodger and Sopwith moron: A couple of free games I downloaded from the archive, but upon launching each one, it goes back to the main GP2X menu!!!

Am I doing something wrong here?! Please offer some advice. It would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

:D

Re NK's emulators, I keep all three emulators separate from one another. That way I can enjoy all three versions of my skins without having to do any switching.

You need a skin for the all the above emulators and the NeoGeoCD emulator doesn't have a dedicated skin packaged with it. You can get mine from the archive though.

The rom which you have said you have downloaded sounds like it will contain an .iso disc image and several .mp3s. If it does follow this example I gave someone else last week it talks about Metal Slug, but the process is the same.

If you have a Metal Slug 2.iso you need to extract the files from that archive as in it's current format it won't run. The easiest way is to use Winrar. If you have it installed just right click on the Metal Slug 2.iso and select open. Left click and drag so that all the files are selected, press ALT + E and select ok. You will then get a file folder that contains the uncompressed game data. To zip it up open the folder, left click and drag highlighting all the files, right click and select add to archive, change the archive format to .zip. You have now successfully made a .zip game file that will run in the emu. If you have MP3's as well you don't need to do anything special to them if they are name Metal Slug 02 02 through to Metal Slug 02 20 inclusive. You just make a file folder called NeoCD.mp3 and drop them into it.

Putting the files on your SD card.

Here is one way of doing it.

SD Card\NeoCD2\memcard.bin
.........................\neocd.bin
.........................\neocdgp2x.gpe
.........................\ng-lo.rom
.........................\patch.prg
.........................\startup.bin
.........................\save
.........................\skin0\filer.png
..................................\folder.png
..................................\game.png
..................................\loading.png
..................................\zipped.png
.........................\Games\Metal Slug 2<-This is a file folder you need to make
.......................................................\Metal Slug 2.zip
.......................................................\NeoCD.mp3<-This is a file folder you need to make
..........................................................................\Metal Slug 02 02.mp3 etc through to Metal Slug 02 20.mp3

Go to Game on your GP2X
Select SD Memory Card
Select NeoCD2 folder
Select neocdgp2x.gp3...wait.
Select Games folder
Select Metal Slug 2 folder
Select Metal Slug 2.zip

Press B and the game will load, the music starts in the character selection screen.

And one final mention, not all games play their respective .mp3's in the background at the moment.

The games that I know will are:

Aero Fighters 2
Aero Fighters 3
Metal Slug
Metal Slug 2
Neo Turf Masters
Pulstar

Frodo and Frodo.gpe, FrodoPC and Frodo.gpe need to be at the root of your SD card, not in any folders you can have a separate folder to keep your roms in though.

SMSPlus, haven't tried it yet, but will give it a go and let you know what happens.

I haven't played the homebrew games either, have you double checked their respective readme files. I only have 7mb of space left on my 1gb SD card so I am being selective about what goes on it at the moment.

For rockdodgers,
I believe you put files and directorry not onto root, did you?
The launch script for rockdodger, it excutes the file on directory from root and if it failed , just return to main menu, like your case.

If you don't want put it on root, you can edit .gpe file on text editor.

For SNES, there is fast one with asm core, but still buggy and no sound (hangs a lot)

And I doubt your rom file (64M) for NeoGeoCD is not exact 'CD' image but mvs catridge.
Please, double check it and if it is .iso file, try to extract files from it and zip.

Well, I have no idea for others . sorry :(

I hope above suggestions might help.

EDIT: Oh, Neostuey beat me :) Try his suggestion for NeoGeoCD and emus, his introduction is more specific

frodo must be on root? nope. mine's in /sd/emulators/c64 and works just fine.
roms and programs can be anywhere. some programs require you to alter their launch-script so that it points at the dir where you put it, but thats the only change needed.

in fact i've got no files at all, only directories, at root level, and I've had pretty much ALL the programs listed above working ok.

this is bizzare. i've got absolutely no idea why you've got all these problems. sorry.

Well this is taken directly from the authors own readme file that comes with frodo2x-0.9.6.

= Frodo2x ==

Congratulations on your download of Frodo for the GP2X. When used properly
Frodo2x can bring many hours of stimulation. Please observe the following
operating instructions.

=== Operation ===

Copy the files:

Frodo.gpe
Frodo
FrodoPC.gpe
FrodoPC

to the top level of your SD card.

And, I do understand that you can go changing scripts, but in the case of something not working I find it always best to set things up as the file author suggests in the readme before making changes. That way I can't introduce any problems. :)

Okay just tried SMSPlus2X for the first time using Shinobi game rom.

Press start when rom loaded get kicked out to main GP2X menu and what's more cannot restart the emulator.

Shut down and reboot. Restart the emulator.

Used A to start the game and it runs pretty well for such an early beta. Just don't touch the start button or you get the first scenario of not being able to run the emu again. I am sure this is just a little bug that will be overcome fairly soon. :)

Whoa MAMA! I got Double Dragon working pretty well on the NeoCD2 emu! WOW! I'm loving my X2 more and more every day.

Hmmm, I wonder if anyone plans a port of Stella....

I'll also try the SMS suggestion and see what happens.

Thanks again, everyone! :)

If Frodo is setup correctly and still doesn't run, it is because the GPH might write-protect the SD-Card.

If that is the case, a firmware update (the evil gp2xboot.img) is needed.
