well, my MP3 player can do exactly the same, but it's good that some companies get interested in this kind of problem, and 2.5 hdd is cheaper and bigger than 1.8 etc anyway :]

Interesting, I must say.

I almost didn't click when I saw the name of the topic. I thought "Oh, great, another newbie asking if they could use OTG". I was wrong, which came as a nice surprise.
 
too bad the GP2X's implementation of Mass Storage currently fails. So I doubt it will work until GPH or a talented dev fixes it.

first, i'm here since 03/03/03, and second, we usually tell about USB HOST for the GP2X , OTG being a bit different because not host as it is point-to-point if i understood rightly wich i maybe did or maybe not ;)


by the way, this drive is not interesting just because it's OTG or host, like i said my MP3 player is also, but this thing has backup/push functions to switch between the things you want on your memory card easily as shown on the 2nd example in the image :) and then that becomes mmore interesting! :)

so the magiceyes chip usb is connected to the ext port in some way? like usb 1.0 speeds or serial speed i wonder, because 115kbps is pretty damn slow for data transfer. but it does open up some possibilities i think
 
for the built-in USB, i'm wondering if it's possible to desolder the magiceye (for a professional of soldering :p ) in order to put a thin plate (like these flexible orange things) on it with pins derivations, and all back on the PCB, thus giving us a special connector for all the non-wired things of the chip :D

but that's another subject, maybe i should make another topic about it :p

What are you talking about?

Go Here and look at pins 9-12

I assume you mean things other than the USB, those pins are marked USBH1-, USBH1+, USBD-, USBD+.

I think the speculation is that the H means host. In which case any USB peripheral we wanted could be made to work. But only at USB 1.1

that's why i'm afraid these USB pins on the ext would be linked to the external suspicious chip instead of the MMSP2 itself ..... but i'm not dev and i don't know the architecture better than from this kind of diagrams , but GPH declarations don't make me get positive about that precise subject :ph34r:

I just showed what was on the wiki.

The USB 2.0 chip was put in to enable faster than USB 1.1 transfers, which are kind of slow when you are moving stuff onto 1GB or larger SD cards.

The USB 2.0 chip *should* be connected to the USB port on the side of the GP2X, next to the power plug.

I don't know if it is the host, it just seems to make sense for it to be the host because the Device USB is already on the side of the unit.

Edit: Look at the bottom USB B on that diagram, it is the host one, see how it goes straight to the MMSP2?

the first diagram was not the one i wanted, i figured that it was a dev board diagram, with some extrenal controllers :p


so the MMSP2's usb is ONLY 1.1 ? that can explain things, i first thought that it had some 2.0 , then it seems too easy, like we already have the host physically then it gets more complicated to choose between an OTG hard drive in 2.0, and a hosted device in 1.1 <_< but having the choice is a good thing already :D

OTG isn't supported by the extra USB2.0 chip in the gp2x.
Not sure if it is supported by the MMSP2 1.1 chip, but who needs it is it supports host mode?

Oh and besides the fact that the extra chip is faster than the MMSP2 build in, it also supports that DRM transfer thing, which is probably another main reason why it was included.

I'm just happy to hear that it looks like the 1.1 host port is exposed via the ext port.
 
that opens up a helluva lot of possibilities! a ext to usb female adapter would be very useful, just find the pinout for the usb host. then a thing to power it, or an all in one thing. man i got some ideas for this. hope we see this used sometime soon in the future can you say usbWIFI? lol
 
well that settles it, we need ot find out definitavly wether or not the ext port has the magiceyes usb attached to it!
