Post Your Handheld Collections!!

You know, I genuinely enjoy them all :D.
I have to admit that there are couple I've played rather a lot: Penguin is surprisingly addictive to me - very simple, but there's a real "just a little further" thing I get from it... Ares is also rather compelling for such a crap shooter - I'm still trying to figure out what all the power-ups do, though I've seen them all several times, and the music is really good, except that there are only two bars of it that they loop over, and over, and over... Lanneret is frustrating but the bizarro screams of the hostages you're supposed to be rescuing and the way the helicopter "animations" work are amusing. And I don't even want to think about all the time I've spent playing Drifter, the New Adventure Island clone built into the system - with birds that look like some sort of flying piranha fish and missles as an optional power up (instead of arrows!) this one is so weird that I keep going back to it to see what other strangeness they might have injected into it...

I have to say that I can have just as much fun reading the back of the packaging for each game as anything though... Here's the one from the Penguin box:
QUOTE
Have you gone to the south pole? Do you watch the penguin running? Ifnever, now you have chance to control the running of penguin Hurry up and go to touch it.
(sic) Punctuation errors, missing spaces, inuendo and all... :D Or how about this one from Ares:
QUOTE
Some day in 21st century, the earth was attached by exotic. For the safe of our earth, a batter was broken between the earth and the exotic.
 WTF?!?

As an aside, the sides of my game boxes show the games coming in colored cartridges - red, blue, green, black and gold... Does anyone have any colored carts for their Game King games? Mine are all dark grey... :(

I got my Game King 2 when Craig used to sell em, I think I got 10 craptastic games with it, played em all once and haven't touched the thing since :D

I got Atari Lynx version 1 and version 2 with about 15 games official AC adaptor and case (no boxes)
Two Neo Geo Pocket colours with about 12 games
Two purple Game Boy colours (one boxed one not)
One transparent Game boy Pocket with official case only got 3 GB games tho and no boxes
Black GBA
Flame Red SP and a Zelda Edition SP got about 30 odd games
both a Silver and a Blue GBM
A good old original silver DS and about 15 or so games
A black PSP with around 8 games
GP32 with official earphones and Astonisha story R case
GP2X (of course) with official case and strap
Onestation (turned up today infact B) )

Next on my list is a pink DS lite, I've been looking at them for ages and I got paid the other day so I might aswell treat myself to one.

Just added a new MD Max to my collection this past week.

The box is very impressive. Glossy cover over real thick cardboard with imbedded magnets to keep the lid closed.
The unit itself seems of higher quality than the OneStation or any of JungleTacs other stuff.
Only one thing that bugs me about this unit. Why did they put a wide screen LCD on something that is made a dedicated
game machine?!! It does distort the graphics in some games. And this screen has scan lines which gives it a grainy look.

A bit bulkier than the OneStation. :)

edit: I like the contra type game on my GameKing II, I think it is called "Soldier."

That thing looks a little auquard... um, akwar aukward ...ah, awkward (sp?) to use with the button placement - looks cool though, except for the cheesy "chromed" D-Pad and buttons - I wish they'd spare us the bling and just do something simple and clean in terms of the unit's look... Anyway, is the RCA cable a video out to run it on the TV? If it is, what's it look like hooked up to a 4x3 television?

Speaking of the wide screens on these units, I wonder where they're getting the screens from; at the prices they're selling these things at, I can't imagine they're ordering custom-designed LCDs - they're probably just buying up an existing, low-cost design that was originally for cell-phones or MP3 players or something... if that's the case, it might explain why they go for the 16x9 ratio rather than the 4x3, if that's all that's available at their price point...

Oh ya, that' one looked cool too - I've played it once, briefly, but haven't been able to drag myself away from touching my penguin to try Soldier again!

And speaking of cheap Chinese knock-off handhelds, I just added a Watara Supervision to my collection, to sit alongside my Quickshot Supervision... :) I'll post some pics when I get the unit!

My first thoughts were concerning the button placements too. I have not really noticed any problem while playing. I too, wished they would get away from the cheap looking chrome. Black buttons would have made it look really sleek.

As for the TV-Out. It is NTSC only for some reason. The OneStation was PAL and NTSC. To me the TV-Out on the OneStation and the MD Max has problems. I can only get black and white on the MD Max. On the OneStation it has to be my 5" PS1 LCD screen to get color on all of my NES game carts. I have yet to get color on either system for the MD game carts. Maybe my stuff is just too old for it. I only have a Panasonic 27" and an old Sanyo 19." The Sanyo had to have a RF modulator to use the RCA plugs. But I really am into portable gaming so this does not bother me. It would only be a plus if I could get it to work properly.

I have looked for those two occasionally. Might have to start looking again.

Well, I got my Watara Supervision - it's interesting to see the differences between it and the Quickshot model; basically, the Watara version has little "legs" on the back so you can set it on a table top with the screen section tilted up. Other than that, minor changes in the shades of grey used in the casing colour are the only noticable differences besides the branding... If you're looking for a Supervision, Darkman, there's a Watara model on Ebay now: Supervision on Ebay as of Aug 27, 2007.

I've got a Version 2 NGPC and a Wonderswan Color coming soon - I'll post new pics of the whole collection once they arrive. I've also got a line on a Swancrystal and a NeoGeo Pocket Color with Afterburner mods - hoping to pick those up so I can use these systems in any lighting conditions!

Last but not least, I already gots one, so if anyone's interested, there's a reasonably priced Game Boy Light on Ebay right now: Game Boy Light Gold on Ebay as of Aug 27, 2007. I love this system! I think it's the only way to play my old-school Game Boy games - original hardware and easy to see!! :)

Finally, some new pics of my collection (I know you've all been waiting with baited breath) ~

First, here's how the display unit looks now:

And here's the complete collection to date:

handhelds.jpg

Note that where there's a box, there is a system in the box that's basically new/mint - I was too lazy to pull them out of their boxes for the pics...

So from the top left and flowing down in semi-logical columns : MIB Atari Lynx I, MIB Bandai Wonderswan (Pearl White), MIB Bandai Swancrystal (Violet), Wonderswan, Bandai Wonderswan Color, Swancrystal (#2), SNK NeoGeo Pocket Color version 1 (crystal), SNK NeoGeo Pocket Color version 1 (silver), SNK NeoGeo Pocket (blue camo), SNK NeoGeo Pocket Color version 2 (metalic blue), (btt) MIB Tiger R-Zone, NEC TurboExpress, Game Park Holdings GP2X, original Nintendo Game Boy (x3), Game Boy Pocket (black), Game Boy Light (silver), Pokemon Edition Game Boy Color (x2), Game King I, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo Game Boy Micro (x2), Game Boy Advance SP (x4), Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite (x3), (btt) Milton Bradley Microvision, Nintendo Game & Watch Donkey Kong Hockey, Atari Lynx I (#2), Atari Lynx II (x2), Sega Nomad, Sega Game Gear (x2), Tiger game.com, Tiger R-Zone, Sony PSP (x2), Quickshot Supervision and a Watara Supervision...

 whew! :D

Very nice! I've been wanting to take everythin from its hiding place for an updated group pic, as my collection has grown quite a bit since the last one taken (page 1 of this thread I think). It's too much effort :p. When I add a microvision I think I'll take a new shot of everything.

As for the Game Theory Admiral I ordered, still nothing has arrived. The company is supposedly based in the UK and claims that US shipments can take 2 or more weeks for delivery...well, it has been just over 2 weeks now! I'm beginning to think I'll have to dispute the charge, which makes me pissed off, obviously, but the chance of me not getting the handheld pisses me off even more :(

On the plus side, if they have sent it out and you get your money back before it arrives, you get a free unit :D.

I doubt it. They'd surely counter-claim and submit proof it was sent. Even if they didn't, I'd still pay them for their goods :)

Wow! You have a very, very nice collection there jimid2. :)
thanks Darkman...

Hey, how's the Pocket Arcade site doing? I haven't seen any new stuff up there in a while... I think it was a great idea to start a site like that and the name is excellent - I really like the banner art on the site too... Of course, finding decent free hosting is nearly impossible, but what can you do... :)
