http://www.nurve.net/ - Vapourwear?

Certainly looks like vapourware to me, reminds me of that phantom console where all u see is artists impressions. Of course the phantom is due to be revealed soon so thats a bad example.

Its all just drawings while screenshots from the pc stuck in so there isnt anything concrete. I guess it could turn out to be real but even if it is it doesnt look like it will be out for a while.

I agree, generally you would expect them to at least have some photos of prototypes or something other than renders. Who knows though, stranger things have happened...

The Virtual Boy! There's a handheld that should have been vapourwear :D

I hope it isn't real. If it is real it would be a lot better than the gp32. It would also be expensive and I don't want to buy another expensive handheld.

Just to be picky, they can't even spell "Confidential"!!! Jees.

Right - Let's do the math here...

1) Usb 2.0 interface? - No (Nope, No-Way, Not on your nelly, Nada, A big fat X!). Not everyone has USB 2.0 yet, so unless the port is backwardly compatible, then it's not going to be for the "mass market." Yeah - I got one, but I know many who don't have a 2.0 port, and it's them who are going to suffer (If it ever makes it into the real world)

2) Onboard virtual pet - Oh brother... Talk about soooo "last year"! (Okay - Maybe not something that sticks out as being justification on calling this unit a fake - I just hate tomag, tigym, tamyygot, whatever! - You just can't kill the blighters!)

3) "Massive backlit color display" - As if this isn't for all those out there that hope... Ooh, it's backlit - Not just that poxy "frontlit" business! - I wonder what nuclear reactor powers this thing? (Oh yeah - No mention of that! - Power *batteries* that is!) ..... "with built in magnification" - Um, why? Isn't that a cop-out way of saying "Cr@p resolution, so we'll build in a magnifying glass!"

4) "Built in force feedback" - Again I ask you, where are we going to get the dylithium crystals from?

5) "Video output" - Why? It's not going to look good!? And why is it outputting a higher resolution to the TV and not the internal screen? By not very much, I give you that - But it's still a question. (And will this unit be made differently for Europe/US/etc - Due to PAL/NTSC and SECAM!!!)

6) Media - What is it using - Surely as it's built they know how to get the files on the unit - But no... no mention of that!

7) Going back to this "Confidential" rubbish - If it is, why have it on the page? Why - Because someone, who just loves the fact that a lot of people are talking about his bogus creation, wants you to find it - That's why!

8) It just looks soooo fake - Okay? Just, because!

Now - If I'm wrong then slap me with a wet kipper, but this looks like someone who has been reading one too many boards with the gripes of current hand-helds stuck firmly in the fore-front of his mind - Thus creating a unit which pleases the masses - But, as seen, it's not "all that" - And, to be honest, the new Sony unit sounds better - And we don't know much about that!

If someone invents a holodeck before X-Mas next year though, please drop by this board and inform us all - Please?

Hmm...Nanogear may not arise as beautifully as the website claims, but I think it will come to be. Nurve is a spin-off company of Xtreme Games LLC (http://www.xgames3d.com), which we should all know from the many, many Prima books co-authored by Andre' LaMothe. Xtreme Games has always backed the aspiring game developer, so we may see Nanogear as the next big PD development platform. I think LaMothe may have actually had enough clout to pull in Capcom and Id Software...and this might also be the reason why there aren't any Capcom games yet for the Gamepark32 like initially stated.

Nurve may be a real company, but they're clearly still in the "trolling for investors" stage. They're probably not going to do any hardware development or prototyping untill there is some money for it. Right now they're just throwing out their idea and hoping people will invest. When and if they get enough money to go to the actual design stage, the actual device could look totally different with entirely different specs.

Since the members of this board represent their exact target demographic, perhaps someone should invite the founders to get our opinions on what a handheld.

the "networking", is infrared. I could just imagine a multiplayer game, and someone accidentally moved, then the whole game would be messed up. :D

I'm not so sure now that this is a load of rubbish.... have a look at the xgamestation at www.xgamestation.com. This is another of Andre LaMothe's spin off companies and this seems a lot more tangible than the handheld at nurve. But maybe in a couple of months we may see nurve in the position that the xgamestation is now.

It looks the part, but it's only got a 240x160 resolution, half the pixels we have. And the main CPU part can only do 50mips, half what ARM rates the GP cpu at. So no snes, genesis, CP1, ST etc. At least without horendous screen squash. I do like the TV out,DSP, and extra buttons though.

Nanogear - ARM7 with 2d and 3d hardware acceleration, 240x160 res. LCD

GBA - ARM7 with 2d and 3d hardware acceleration, 240x160 res. LCD

Coincidence? My money says that the guys behind this are designing a a handheld specifically to emulate the GBA. They can't come right out and say it, but I'll bet ease-of-emulation played heavily into the design.

No more shocking than any of the retro machines we use the GP to emulate. I still use my SNES and Amiga on a TV regularly, and 'cos of the TV's built in blurring, it looks fine. Hell I remember using a XZ81 on a TV, now that's really did look crap :)
