Ds Vs Psp

I just stated my opinion and said "to each is own" when Rico flipped out on me and said i make trolling comments. They are my opinions, and if you get defensive over them that's just sad and pathetic.
Oh please. It's human natures to have opinions and argue them, that's what I meant by 'defensive'. And this topic is called 'Ds Vs Psp', so don't get surprised if I start talking about them.

So your 'trolling comments' are just opinions, huh? You really think that any game that uses the touchscreen involves 'just fucking rubbing a screen like a deuchebag repeatedly'? Are you aware of how stupid that sounds in the context of a 'mature conversation'?

Yes, they are casual. But also consider them to be quite childish, nevermind completely sucking ass in my eyes. But to each is own.

btw codeninja, you having hookas avatar is throwing me off ;)

All gaming is childish, its fun a form of make believe and escapism ;)

At the end of the day first person perspectives are just an electronic version of cow boys and indians
Strategy games well lets face it its playing war with toy soldiers
Animal crossing sims etc.. well its a doll house experince

Computer games are just a means to let the big kid out of ourselves without looking silly :p

Just cause a game has adult themes doesn't remove the fact that at heart its still a childsih concept

My mum still tells me im 30 years old and far too old to playing silly games :p

But hey who cares there a fun way of killing time.

Be it playing silly little games on warioware or running around playing cops and robbers in GTA.

Face it if you play games your a big kid at heart :p

humm. does that mean that fighting games are the electronic version of a playground scrap?

(well yeah, it all makes sense now ;) )

almost fanboyish of you my good friend :)

Well, that depends on whether he can back that up with some facts. Anyway, it seems people are not interesting casual vs hardcore debate. :( I'd rather see people arguing about BurnOut/GTA LS for PSP and MarioKart/Animal Crossing for DS or something like that.

I used to get into fights after playing fighting games, which is why I only play single player now.

Over the last couple of months I've been watching people on the subway trains to and from work, I've noticed a much higher number of people playing PSPs to people playing DSs.

The ratio so far has been about 5:1

Obviously the numbers of DS sales can't be lying and I have no reason to doubt they arnt true, Even sony knew going in that Nintendo was a hard opponent in the handheld market even if they couldn't hold second place in the console market, which is why they added the extra features like movies, music and internet to sweeten the deal. Many people are simply finding more use for their PSPs in public than their DSs.

This isnt to say there arnt good games on the DS. They're just DIFFERENT for the most part, Funny stuff, maze/puzzle arcade action games, all better suited for playing and shutting off halfway through even if you havent saved, where as PSP games are designed to be more time intensive, RPGs, long adventure games, 3-5 minute long race tracks things you wouldnt want to loose your prgress in... true it's not mutially exclusive to either system that they have these types of games, heck half of my games on PSP I can quit out of without feeling a sense of loss like Ultimate Block Party or Lumines, while there are a few PSP games that are long and involved like Phoenix Wright or Trace Memory and even ports of other games like Need For Speed and Burnout Legends.

Nintendo's policy has always been to keep gaming open to younger individuals because they're the people who become the 20 and 30 somethings that still play games today but this means they get a bad rap for being childish. Dig Dug and Mr Driller games, Zookeeper they all look very colorfull and candy like and while games like this and a half dozen Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob games make up a lot of their catalog it's not all they have, they're just the most visible and it makes people who enjoy the occasional bloody actionfest feel like they're being talked down to (remember Nintendo was the company that said you didn't need blood and gore in Mortal Kombat or thought beating up chain wielding street walkers in Final Fight was unacceptable) so their insistance on feeding the younger players need for games just hurts their reputation further and the people defending it take offense to the word childish even though that's really the most simple term to discribe their games (ie. Childish - posessing a childlike or youthful point of view.)

Meanwhile Sony gets a bad rap for looking like al they care about is sex and violence, this is also an over generalization, or we probably would never have played Katamari Damashi outside of a japanese import. What makes that anymore "childish" (for lack of a better word) looking than a mario game? Nothing I can spot. But they continue to gain the 20 something dollar because they have lots of sexy CG characters Running, flipping, kicking, shooting, killing etc and sony knows this is what they want to see. Meanwhile noe one ever notices the pile of Spongebob games in the back with the PS2 logo on them because even the stores know they arnt going to sell as fast as they would on one of Nintendo's platforms for the very reason I detailed in the last paragraph.

But maybe I've over thought it and it's simply that people prefer to be seen with the "sexy black adult device" the PSP looks like rather than the "colorful toy" that the DS comes across as when you see both of them from a distance. I know I'm personally waiting for a Black DS to be relesed before I buy one, and I totally expect to or I wouldnt already have bought games for it in anticipation of that day. With the PSP, Sony went for the high price point iPod/cell phone crowd rather than gamers (which they were going to get anyway, the PS2 made that evident) because they knew they could get them they've always been about form and estetics for their devices being seen in the street, Nintendo on the other hand is usually about function except when they pulled out the GBA micro which many concider a horribly failed attempt and grabbing the same type of person, but for nintendo it dosent matter because people will always come to their system for fun simple kid friendly games and a lower price point because that's what they'll always generally be known for and maybe something a little extra long the way. There's enough for both hardcore and casual gamers on both systems, but Sony is a Media company and they know they can get more movies to sell faster on thier underdog than games in the first couple of years which is why the catalog is slightly weaker in comparison. People wanting a wide varaiety of games will see the 4 dozen on the shelf for the DS and the lower price tag and go for that and that also translates into better sales.

I own both a NDS and a PSP, and I have to say that I do not like either.

I love NDS's games. They are awesome. Wario Ware, Kirby Canvas Curse, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Meteos. The list goes on and on. I hate the actual system though. I don't hate it's features like touch screen and such. I just hate how the device feels and looks. It looks and feels like cheap plastic. The machine feels top heavy when you are holding it. It does not feel comfortable in you hards, and the buttons are far to small.

I love how PSP looks. Its glossy plastic feels and looks great (although it is a fingerprint magnet). The action buttons feel great (although the DPad and the "Nub" are less than perfect). The system feels good in your hands. The games are garbage, though. GTA is not even that good. When GTA fails to be a killer app, you have trouble on your hands. PSP brings nothing new to the table, and it actually feels like you are being sucked bag in the distant past of year 2000 with its games. I have had enough.

Another thing that bothers me about both systems are their backlit screens. Don't get me wrong, backlit screens look great indoors, but if you want to take them out into the sun, where they should be played, they look horrible. You cannot see a damn thing especially on PSP. Backlit screens are making portable no longer portable. That is why I am sticking with my frontlit gba sp and my supercard sd. That is a handheld fun. I suggest that you do the same, until Nintendo redesigns DS, which should be in about another month. "Indroducing NDSSP"

I'm very certain that Phoenix Wright and Trace Memory are both DS games. :D

One thing that doesn't make sense to me about PSP in the US, is that why, I mean, WHY people buy UMD movies paying more than they would pay for DVDs. DVDs are cheaper and have more extras and you can always rip it to put the movie on memorystick for no extra cost!!! Where is the logic? It makes zero sense to me.

All the gaming rumor sites are betting on DS SP or whatever sometime this year. If Micro/Revo designs are any indication, this time we can put word DS and sexy together after Nintendo demoed brick DS prototype (the agliest system ever in history in my book) 2 years ago at E3 2004.

I agree 100%, but in regards to the price, it really depends on where you look to buy them. Some basic movies are 20-25 USD, while some of the mini episodes on UMD can run from 25-30 USD. Based on my experiences they've been around the same price, but I personally would probably never buy a UMD. But i think the saying is "there's a sucker born every minute". So I guess sony's making a nice chunk of money just from the sales of UMDs.

I finally picked up a DS yesterday myself. I have a PSP already, which has been sitting on the shelf at work for weeks now. I Must have played the DS more in one day then i played the PSP in weeks. One of the best things about the DS is being able to have both a DS game in the top, and a GBA game in the bottom. Makes it easy to take two great games with you.

As to what others have said: Yes i dont much like the design of the DS myself. It does seem kinda odd, but i guess i'll get used to it. I guess if i was worried about what people thought of me in public, i would choose the PSP. I'm more concerned with games though, so i'd say the DS easily knocks the psp out of choice spot.

i love my psp, but there are barely any games for it, the only game i play now is Socom since gta isnt online. im really just waiting for Daxter and Gran Turismo now, possibly Exit and in years time a real metal gear solid

saying that though the ds has only 2 games which appeal to me - Mario Kart and Monkey Ball, but that will probably make me buy this shit in a few months time

I have nothing constructive to ad, but I just watched 6 hours of West Wing on my comp, and I get a wierd mental image of Toby and Josh arquing about merits of DS and PSP.

I get that often, par example, if I watch an episode of Stroumphs, and then think, "I need to go to store to buy some milk", the mental image of me going to shop buying milk is one of the Stroumphs going to store to buy milk.

Anyone else get these? :p

Edit: What do you know, they actually call them Smurfs in english, just like in finnish.

Don't hold your breath on Exit. I thought it could be a cool game, but it was nothing more than 2d prince of persia with horrible control. You're given very minimum time to finish each level, and the control gets into the way all the time making the experience utterly frustrating. Simple running and jumping takes 10+ tries and you'll make it once. The control totally broke the game.

My bad I DID mean to say DS refering to those games, too many innitials too little time!

The reason peole are buying the movies is simply because it's easy to do. most stores with any sense are discounting the hell out of them because they know how hard they are to sell at full price. People see them in a store for cheap, and lets say they're going on a trip, it's easier to drop 15 bucks on a UMD than 19 on a less portable DVD that they'd need a portable player with a screen that dosent also play games.

As for games on the PSP, GTA is a mixed bag, I mean personally I've been playing it for hours and I'm still not off the first island yet so I can safely say I'm getting a lot of play time out of it. MGAcid is an odd game but I still find myself going back to it from time to time and I'm pretty certain I'll be buying the sequel because it is a thinking game as much as a "luck of the draw" game. I just bought Tokobots and while it might feel a bit generic it's a well made adventure game so far that's taken enough time away from GTA that I felt like I'd started to neglect it (so I'll probably slip that back in soon.) I got the euro import of Pursuit Force which is a difficult game but no different than the average konami action game so it'll be a bit frustrating and take a while to beat but will make up for the slow game release shedual. Ultimatly 4 generally large games should be enough for anyone on the go, the only problem is when people want even more variety at one time than they'll like be prepared to play.
