smash and i thought about contacting Julian Gollop for the sources of the original X-Com game for the purpose of porting. he replied saying he doesn't own the rights anymore, but he also said: "There may be something we can do."
so we thought we could show Julian how much the GP32 scene is interested in this game. well then, what are you waiting for? VOTE!

dumb, dumb question I know, but I don't know a lot, or much at all about video games. Well, here goes: What is X-Com?? What games play or can you play on it? Sorry for the stupidity.

He doesn't own the rights to X-com, which is why he isn't allowed to make anymore games under that title (he had to revert to 'laser squad') Whoever owns the rights to the miccroprose back catalogue are the only people who could authorise releasing the source :(

Fair enough, but a CLONE or a REMAKE doesn't involve original source...duh. but I think it would be a really good idea. But the copyright holder has the rights to the code- if you used any of it you may be in the shit. I'm not sure if they would even be bothered now, but it's always a worry. Does anyone even know who holds the copyright now? who bought out microprose? Might be better to start from code that Julian does hold the rights to, like the old 16bit laser squads, and build up from there.

Also you could use the source on this site to get you started:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ufo2000/ an open source remake of XCOM-UFO

X-com is a fantastic game, Julian Gollop has made some of my all time favourite games.

Get your hands on the Spectrum emulator and download Rebelstar and Rebelstar 2 (you can get Rebel Star Raiders which was the first in the series but it's 2 player only) as these are my 2 fave Speccy games.

Then came Laser Squad which you can get on the speccy, c64?, Atari ST, Amiga and PC.

X-com was initialy going to be Laser Squad 2 but Microprose wanted more strategy so it evolved into UFO enemy unknown here in the UK and named Xcom in america.

Xcom terror from the deep was just a rewrite of xcom 1 but underwater......

Adios,
Matt

yeah, i already saw UFO2000, but it uses Allegro, which would also need to be ported. would prolly be easier to write the thing from scratch. or maybe not. who knows.
I'm pretty sure it'd be easier to port that to rewrite. :p

sheesh, Klown. if we have even a little chance of getting the original author to do it MUCH better than we could ever do, then why not try?
Umm, the original authors are busy working on Laser Squad Nemesis right now, so I doubt they'll be doing any pointless porting. And I doubt they'll make a version of LSN for the GP32, since it's an e-mail game. :p

Mind you, LSN rocks, and everyone should go check it out.

Strange, I heard of LSN just reently from other sources, now I come back here and people are talking about it.

I'd like to see a game like this on the GP32, but it would be a lot of effort...
