So Is Today The Day?

gluesniffined, likely the reason they're using a proprietary mpeg4 codec is because the open source one typically included with mplayer doesn't use the dedicated video hardware, and on a 200 mhz device, it's needed to have a shot at decoding full size (ie, 720x480) video at any reasonable speed. Now, 320x240 video may be possible with a ridiculously optimized software decoder (the dreamcast, a 200 mhz SH4, could bearly do it), but I doubt mplayer or its codecs have even an ounce of ARM assembly in them.

But a codec only tells the player how to decode the file, not how to run on a specific hardware. Of course we won't know either way till we get the source code.

Yes but... the player isn't an issue here.

The problem is the code what is utilizing the gp2x's hardware to decode videos is custom one so it could not be free. So we might not get the source of it...

A solution to using the gph video player.
Port a diff one :p

Im satisfied with it anyway.. most of my stuff is xvid and it runs fine on the beast.

Yes cragix is an awesome guy and does tons of work and helps out people alot around here, I didn't care if we got a new firmware updaet for a bit but I'm sorry for him taking offense to whatever anyone said

So why did people think it was gonna be released today when something had come to delay it?

Because the mods locked the "where is the firmware" thread because of pre-flamewar hostilities and it dropped off the front page of the forums. Since this is pretty much THE topic on everyone's mind this thread immediately sprung up to replace it.

IMHO the mods should delete posts they find offensive rather than nuke the thread, because this is pretty much the biggest thing going on, and people want to discuss it. Better that it's in one thread rather than many.

I have been following this since it first began a while ago... but anyway, my question was ment to be of a rhetoricle nature for the people that have been in the locked thread. The sad part is that this has been discussed to death over multiple threads. This is like the sixth one atleast.

... and instead of letting it escalate into something as big and nasty as that thread became, running round and round in circles and pissing some very good people off, can we try and do something positive with this thread? I think it might be nice if we could make a show of hands about how many people appreciate the people who are involved in this community. Some of the finest people on this board, DJWillis, EvilDragon, Craigix, Squidge, skeezix (hell even DaveC ;) ) - the list goes on - I feel don't get enough recognition, and I feel amongst all this hostility they're getting lost for what great people they are. *raises cyberglass*
