yep. i think I need a pint as well. slurp.  :)
Well, NOW you're right, this turns into a GPL debate again ;)

@evening2005 : it's very nice you use your gp2x in order to develop games and to teach game development (no kidding here). But at least you've got to admit that the vast majority of gp2x users is not acting like you :p
Even developers may be concerned, for example skeezix call me a thief while he is developing a st emu for the gp2x. Of course the emu itself is not illegal, but it can be perceived as an encouragement to steal some st software, hmmm ? :p

Oh, by the way, please don't use any of my GP2X software :) (Evidently you would prefer to endorse theft of the work of thousands of people, rather than get GPH to straighten their act. Its always fun until its _your_ work thats been swiped.)

So, skeezix, as stated above, you may indirectly "endorse theft of the work of thousands of people" by encouraging the stealing of thousands of atari st developers hard work :p

I have no idea why this is relevant unless you're arguing that because lots of people use ROMs they don't own, GPH don't have to release the source for the GP2X firmware. That seems like a pretty odd argument; presumably most of the linux contributors whose copyright is being violated don't own GP2Xs.

I do not approve GPL violations ! I was saying that as an argument against people bashing (and even threatening or insulting) GPH about this GPL violation, not about the GPL violation itself  Some people think that laws are for everybody, except them. I hate people that act like puritans and consider better than the others, while their souls are just as black as the souls of people they're judging. It does not concern you as you said you don't own any illegal data (rom, divx, mp3), but i sincerely doubt that this is the case of everybody that was bashing and judging GPH.

ps : sorry for my poor english, sometimes I find hard to express myself ,)

Either way, two wrongs don't make a right and GPH are obliged to release the source and look like they are reluctant (to put it mildly) to do so.

I think most of the threats to GPH came from people who read the story on Slashdot and emailed GPH directly. I didn't see any threats in these forums, although I saw a lot of insults, most of which were directed at people who were arguing on the same side as me in this issue.

Well, I have a gp2x and I club puppies for fun and then feed their corpses to my captive nun that I keep in the basement.

That's a lot of wrongdoing right there, but I'm not sure how it affects this situation. Maybe GPH need to start breeding puppies or something.

I'm confused.

You don't understand me. Of course "two wrongs don't make a right". I was just pointing that probably many people here are not in the situation to judge what is doing GPH. They just should shut their f***ing mouth. If they are not happy, they should do exactly like you : put their gp2x apart and do not use it till this is resolved ... but i am guessing that many of them, who think they're so smart, just continue to play with DrMD or whatever emu they like, or don't even own a gp2x. Other people, like me, are just more patient ...

If GPH said us "we do not want and will never release the source code ! We piss on the GPL community !" then I'll change my mind, but I don't feel i've got the right to judge GPH, now. It seems that they only tried to distribute binairies as fast as they can, but now they can't.

As a developer, I know that it is not the same to distribute a binary and a source. And I just imagine how GPH will be bashed if they distribute a source that is not "clean", in a developer point of view ! So, now, we just will have to be patient in order to satisfy the GPL cops.

edit: changed "GPL police" to "GPL cops" as it may be confusing, if "GPL police" is interpreted as "GPL license". I'm not talking about the GPL license but about guys that are acting like they are "guardians of the law"

Can anyone answer me if GP release the source of the firmware how they can manage the DRM? If you don't care about the DRM how come you expect commercial games?

NOTE: Regarding to the news I got today from GP the firmware will be released next week.

P.S. : Because of the Lunar New Year Holidays they were not working till yesterday.

What do you mean exactly ? That you're not using stealed roms ?

No, you're keep using the same argument and it's getting nowhere. There is no variation on your theme, plus you're comparing apples and oranges. As someone said around here, two wrongs don't make a right.

As for reluctance to release the source, this is because Dignsys were stupid enough to weave prop. DivX code through their Mplayer implementation, plus I suspect the SD drivers are also closed source - so they've got to unravel stuff. So yes, they're just as scared of violating one copyright infringement as they are another.

DRM can be a closed-source component (a kernel module). SD access can be a closed source component (a kernel module). DivX can be a closed source component (a codec file / program).

My desktop machine, even when it's running linux has closed-source Nvidia drivers. GNU/Linux or other GPL software does not exclude any of this.

Remember, they only need to give the source to the GPL components and their modifications of those. That's the kernal, mplayer and assorted other bits and bobs. The menu, for example, they don't need to provide source to (though it would be awfully nice of them if they would).

edit: An embarrassing number of typos

Deed needs a couple of days of bannination.

Can you explain why ? Btw, are you using stealed roms, FluffyPanda ?

Stolen roms, Deed. It's 'stolen'. Not 'stealed'.

Yes Deed, I have indeed used stolen roms before, but you are talking about a completely different type of copyright violation. At the moment the only rom I have on my gp2x I also have the cart for, but technically even that is illegal in Australia. I even have an EEPROM reader somewhere (more for fun than legality ;) ), and have actually ripped my own roms for personal use. None the less, when you step into an argument about GPL and throw 'are you using stolen roms' at people you're just asking for it.

Well, copyright violations are copyright violations, BUT, I don't want to talk about that. I am using "stolen" roms but I don't feel I robbed anyone, GPH has not released the source already but I don't feel they robbed anyone yet, so ...

Yes, I can explain why, though I do so for the benefit of the others on this forum that keep replying to you.

There is a phenomenon on the internet known as "trolling". This is employed by people who have very small and ineffectual genitalia. The method varies but the aim is always the same, to get people to flame you and distract people from what is being discussed.

Annoyingly it often works. A troll needs only post a few contentious words and half of the forum spends half an hour writing rebuttals. The troll will generally follow this up with some kind of blatantly illogical question designed to bypass the fact that his flimsy argument has been shot to shreds. In doing so he will often be able to extend the flame war for another few pages, all the time laughing behind his monitor at all the attention he is getting and eating pizza.

Any of this sound familiar to anyone?

Please everybody, don't feed the trolls. They go away much quicker when ignored.

@shrubberyrobbery : what i said has never been mindless, and I do not think I am a jerk. I think I said things of common sense. But, you're certainly much more smart than me, aren't you ? You probably know everyting, what is good, what is bad, and so on ... Would you like to be my new guru ?
